The Sage Deliberations of the Ooun«il Are Unusually DiversifiedThe Water Works Company's bill of $2,665 was allowed minus $20.25 which was allowed the street commissioner for making repairs which the water 00mpany had grossly neglected.
The oommittee on accounts reported that the gas bill for city building number 1, for December was 828.60 and for building number 2 was $8.00 making a grand capital prize of 837.20. The chairman, his voioe choking with emotion, asked time to investigate this atempt to break into the public treasury. The request it is needless to remark, was grunted with alacrity.
A bill of the vintage of '88 presented by Watson & Purcel was likewise relegated to the committee on necrology.
The city treasurer reported that the balance cn hand during December together with receipts amounted to 89,601.51. From this amount had been disbursed $2 328 80, leaving a balance on hund of $7,272.71.
The street commissioner reported the improvement of the Terre Haute road to the extent of two car loads of gravel.
A'ter some wise suggestions from various quarters, the Council adjourned at once resolving itself into a board of health for the purpose of electing a secretary for the ensuing year. Dr. 0. E. liankin was nominated and elected without a difcsenting voice.
The Board of Health then adjourned and the Council resolved itself into a committee of the whole to con eider the electric light question. Mr. George E. Fisher a suave yjung gentleman who decorated lus lace with an unlimited cigar, addressed the committee at considerable lsn^th. He represented the National Eleotrc Manufacturing Company of Eau Ciaire, Wis., and the Sperry Electric Company of Chicago. Mr. Fisher beiieves the city should own its own light plant and is not at all adverse to sailing us one. Indeed, he even went so far as to say that that was what he came here for. The ariiclo contributed to Saturday's Jouknal, Mr. Fisher said was bas^d on false premises and buttling with erroneous conclusions, He tnen answered it in a very handsome way and gave some interesting figures. The company tor which he is doiug missionary work will put in plant simular to the oue now lie re for £13,000 or less. For nos over $25,000 a complete plant 111 running order with 80 arc li^hti of 1,200 candle power anu 1,000 incandescent lights of 16 candle power could be put in. The cost of runuing such a plant together with the interest 011 the city bonds at 5 per cent, would muouut in rouud numbers to ^7,-12o a year. The city would save, however,
j?5,00!)
in lurnishing her
.vn lights and have an income of $5,220 from rentals accruing from merchants and tax-payers who would be furnished the light at a mere nominal cost. This would make a grand total of $10,220 which minus the expense of $7,123 would be an annual saving to t-,e city of $2,797. Mr. Fisher vouched for the correctness of his estimates and offered, "if there was anything in it" to tike the oity council off on 1* junket of $1,00 miles that they might view some of his company's plants. The general tenor of the discussion seemed to favor the establishment here of a purely incandescent system to the exclusion of the arc light now in UBe here. If the Council takes up the proffered junket it will probably visit B.iyfield, Wis., or Jamaica, Long Island, where the incandescent system ilourisheth like a green bay tree.

Last Thursday night, shortly after i) o'clock, the people of this community were roused from their dreary slumbers by what was supposed to be an earthquake. The trembling of the earth was felt very plaiuly three times in succession. Men and women rushed out, half dressed, running in all directions, carrying their children, which as they supposed they had snatched from eteruitv, expecting every minute to see the walls of their homes torn asunder aud hurled to the ground. Things were growing worse and would soon have been in a serious condition, but suddenly, some unknowa "Paul Revere," dashed through the panic stricken crowd, announcing "that it had Deeu discovered, that it was only the singing school teacher at Texas schoolnouse, bringing his light and nimble foot down upon the lloor, to inform his class that he had made another one of his mistakes." Gradually the people were induced to return to their homes and now everything has returned to its proper equilibrium.

About 10:30 a. m. Monday the cry fire was heard on our streets. It proved to be an old tenant, house of Uncle Jim Canine's on west Walnut street. It was occupied by Wm. Hoozier and imily. The family had been away visiting and Mr. Hoozier had gone home aud built a good fire to warm tho house while he was gone after his wife, and in some unaccountable manner the house caught fire while he was gone and when discov red by the neighbors, the rooms occupied were a solid mass of liarnes, so that nothing was saved but the clothes they had on. As Mr. Hoozier is a poor man the loss is great to him, in fact all he had. Here is a chance for our charitable citizens to do a good deed as Mr. Hoozier is woithy of charity. There was no insurance on the house so it iu a total loss to Uncle Jim. In its burning Waveland loses an old land mark. The house was built by Thos. Talburt, back in the fo ties. The house wheu built was considered out of town but the town grew out to and around it.

Hlki.in, .Ian. 15.—It is announced that I'rof. Koeli will publish the. ingredients which enter into the composition of his famous lymph. It is ascertained from anthcntic sources that it is the product of chemical processes ill the body. It probably belongs to the group of albuminous compounds. The reaction which frequently follows its use, it is claimed, shows that it is not tox-albumeu. In a certain degree of concentration it kills living- protoplasina, thus making it necrotic, and by removing the conditions under which the bacillus can develop it kills bacteria.
