CoiMTssioxEit or PENSIONS RAUM favorB the proposed reduotion of the fees of pension attorneys to §2. It begins to look as though the fees would be cut.
INSTEAD of being lighter than usual, as everybody expected it would be, the holiday trade has been heavier than it has been for years. This is not onlv true of our own city, but reports from other cities are equally gratifying.
THE Vecdersburg News appeared last Saturday as a Holiday Edition. It consisted of thirty-two pages printed on pink paper. It was the pink of perfection and exhibited the spirit of enterprise on the part of its wide awake publisher, Charles M. Berry. I 1
THE Logansport business men are circulating a petition, praying for the legislature to pass a law for the suppression of itinerant venders of cheap goods, who move from place to place without paying tuxes. The* Logans port business evidently are all protectionists.
NEW YORK PRESS: Ladies, when we depended on England forcalioo in 1837, it oost 37 cents.

the tariff, 5 cents.
IT now seems certain that the United States is going into the beet sugar business. Mr. Oxnord has operated his beet sugar factory so successfully at Grand Island, Nebraska, that he proposes to erect a very large one in California, and hoe contracted with a very large ranche owner to cultivate 1,500 acres in sugar beets the coming season and 5,000 acres the next. Ttiis will be painful news to the Democrats, doubtless, but then they will have to bear it.
THE West Lafayette Herald is kicking like a bay steer over the bills allowed to the Sheriff and Clerk of this county in tha Pettit case and whioh Tippecanooe county must foot. The bill of both officers were itemized when presented to Judge Snyder who carefully scanned them before making the allowance. Each item was according to law. It is very evident from the rendoin talk indulged in by the Herald that its editor has very little knowledge on the subject. A copy of the statutes would be a valuable adjunct to the assets of the Herald establishment.
NEW YORK PRESS: The world produces one year cotton to the amount of nearly 11,000,000 bales,
of which we raise in round numbers 7,000,000 bales,
and export 5,000,000 Yet, in spite of this, we export only £10,000,000
of cotton goods, and import
§30,000,000,
Don't you think we could make more and import less? Major McKinley does.
THE Indianapolis Journal is advocating the cumulative system in vo ting, at lei st for legislative offioers. The obieot is to secure minority representation. The plan has been in operation for many years in Illinois and we believe gives general satisfaction. It can only be applied when there are two or more persons to be elected to the same office AS in the case of county commissioners. The voter in suoh oases has three votes. He has the privilege of casting one vote for each of the three candidates, of two to one and one to another, or all three bo one candidate. It is hardly probable that the scheme will be adopted as it embraces elements of justice that a Democrat majority will not be willing to ooncede to a Republican minority.
IT is estimated that the natural gas oompanies of Pittsburg are supplying more than 27,000 domestic consumers and 1,200 manufacturing consumers from 500,000,000 to 650,000,000 feet of natural gas per day, varying with the oondition of the weather, and with the aotivity of manufacture. It is said that in the oity of Pittsburg and vicinity to ere was oonsumed during 1888 an
amount of natural gas whioh, if the consumers had to depend exclusively upon ooal, would have required during the year about 8,500,000 tons. If to this should be added the amount of coal which would be taken by consumers in other parts of the state, who now depend upon natural gas as a fuel, the amount would be increased to at least 10,000,000.
DEMOCRATIC MISREPRESENTATIONS. Very lew peroO&s have ever read a line of the McKinley tariff law. Tliis 13 especially true of the Democratic editors. If they had ever glanced at it tliey would have seen that the new law has ruade no change of any kind with respect to about one-half the items in tho old law, that of the changes made nearly one-half decreased these duties instead of increasing them, and that in the cases of only a trifle more than one fourth of the items have the duties been advanced. Out of 635 items or group of articles in the new law 305 have precisely the same duties that were imposed by the old law. Of the remainder, the duties have been decreased upon 142 items or groups of articles. Thus out of 035 items the duties have been increased in the cases of no more than 188, or a little more than one-fourth of the whole. As an offset to this increase, we may point to the fact that 75 articles hitherto dutiable have bet
11
placed on
the free list. Chief among them is sugar. A law which leaves nearly onehalf the rates unohanged, whioh cuts down duties nearly one-half of the remainder and plaoes one-eighth of the whole number of articles upon the free list is hardly liable to the ferocious assaults it has received at the hands of a lot of fellows who know nothing of it provisions.
THE Frankfort News liits the nail square on the head in the following: "The oolumns of the News have always been devoted to the interests of Frankfort and Clinton county, and in the main our efforts have been appreciated, yet there are notable exceptions. We have refused advertisements offered us at big prices by merchants of other cities, and have steadily advised our people to purohase their goods of home dealers, believing it the better polioy for all concerned. Ws have stood by every enterprise undertaken by home companies, and did it too without money and without price. Yet some of these, we are sorry to say, have not reciprocated, but on the oontrary, treated us, and the other local newspapers as well, like a wet dog. If they have any printing to do, it is taken elsewhere. Frankfort newspapers are good enough to blow their horn free gratis for nothing, but when it comes to work that must be paid for, they are not in it. However, we suppose that it is simply a verification of the old adage, that corporations have no souls, and there is no use kioking."
THE DuBois (Pa.) Courier contains the following significant item of tariff news:
Grier Brothers Tuesday received their first invoice of American tin plate. The shipment was made from Pittsburg, where the plate has been manufactured since the McKinley bill went into effect. Previous to that time our tin plate all came from foreign countries, yet within two months from the time of the introduction of a protective tariff plants are established and the tin plate is made at home.
Thus, in spite of the shrieks of free trade journals that no tin plate manufacturing would spring up in this country under the McKinley bill, we haye American tin plate delivered to customers in less than three months after its passage, and more than six months before the increased tin plate duty goes into effect.
