THE JOURNAL.
SA.TUKDAY, NOV. 29, 1890.
An Athenian in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma City Daily Times has ton headed article eulogistic of Judge Burford's administration. The substance is as follows: ,"i ltogistar Burford and Receiver Deanoy have beeu diligently endeavoring briug thy uffiirs at the land office under their cart*, to a higher plane of honor able and civilized dealing between mm aud man, They dstermined that everything done shall be done on the strictest business principles and no rowdyism or doll-dozing will bo ullowed. One 'lav lately in a contest room it is said tnut a 'gun' was drawn aud a threat was made that if a certain witness swore to certaiu thing that he should not live to walk out of tli9 room. On another occasion a man stmd five hours in the laud office, not daring to venture down bo3tm.se his life was threatened. The officials have decided put a stop to ouch frontier practices aud this morning Judge Burford was otlled to decide a point of difference between two attorneys in which some violent language was use I in a threatening manner.
Judge iiunord stopped the fractious attorney instinter, and said "We will have no more of this. We demand as much courtesy this room as in any court, and another thing, there are to be no more pistols or knives in this land office. 1 shall have the first man arrested that has a deadly weapon on his parson." •Several wituesses looked down ••heir noses bUt. not a word was said. The case of a man who carries a weapon, is by many looked on with suspioion. When Burford and Delaney made a ruliugon any point, the attorneys and claimants know that it means just what is said. In a short time the business at the land office will go off like a Sunday school.

Comments of the Press on the Result of the Trial. (Lafayette Courier.)
The Courier has never expressed itself as to the guilt or innocence of the acoused, and now that the vjrdict has been rendered by twelve men who are presumed to be .conscientious and unbiased, there is nothing to do but to acquiesce without protest. But while this is a truism, ii is not improper, perhaps to call attention to the inconsistency of the judgment rendered. Pettit was either guilty or he was innocent. There is no middle-ground. It he was guilty of the monstrous crime for which he was indicted, then he ought to have been hanged as nigh as Gilderoy's kite ii he was innocent he should have been allowed to go lree. A sentence to the penitentiary, though even it be for life, is a palpable inconsistency. It is too suggestive that it was a guessiug contest that brought about the result. It is not the province of the Courier to try the case over again, to pass upon the defendant's guilt or innocence, or to impugn the good intentions of the jurors, but no line discrimination is necessary to discover the inconsistency of a verdict that seems half apologetic. A lifo sentence is a very severe one, to be sure, but it the prisoner is deserving of a term in the penitentiary, he is equally deserving of the extreme penalty. (Lafayette Call.)
There seems to be a great degree of uaanimity of sentiment in approval of the verdict this comunity. At least ninety-nine out of every one hundred people believe Pettit to bo probably guilty, und yet, iu a case purelv circumstantial, there was a natural hesitancy at condemning the prisoner to death. The verdict is almost universally approved, as just to the prisoner, while yst upholding the majesty of the law. The jury was supposed, by the most shrewd observers, to stand" three for and niLO against the prisoner, and a disagreement was confidently looked for by the prisoner's counsel, and would li-ve been no surprise t^ tl:
JDoral i. ill iii\ A aouv'' Unn was ly expected oy most. The result is a splendid triumph lor our own Prosecutor, George W. Haywood, as well as Mr. An erson, the young Montgomery cauuty Prosecutor, who have so ably conducted the case. The attorneys for the delense did everything which men could, in behalf of their client, but it is clear they erred in personally assailing, as they did, reputable witnesses on be half of the State, in the arguments and the result was no doubt somewhat damaging to their case. Their defense was lamentably week in vital facts, and consisted too largely of glittering generalities, to strike the average jury quite favorably but it would be unjust to censure defendant's counsel—for this it was another fault they did all that men to save their client, and have a large aud varied assortment of "exceptions" and technicality with wliioh to tempt the capricious palate of the Supreme Coifrt in his behalf. (Terre HauteaExpress.)
The brother and sister of Mrs. Pettit stood at the door of the court house to thank the jurymen who had just rendered a verdict of guilty apaiUst the liev. Mr. Pettit. A bailiff" should have hustled Unit sister and brother out of the way. The jury which in all probability had reluctantly, for justice's sake, pronounced the reverend oriuiinal guilty, could not wish to be considered the agent of tho brother and sister's vengeance.

Pacts Worth Knowing,
In all diseases of the nasal mucous membrane the remedy used must be non-irritating. The medical profession h8R been slow to learn this. Nothing satisfactory can be accomplished with douches, snuffs powders or syringes be-
IUSO they are all iritating, do not thoroughly reach the effected surfaces and should be abandoned as worse than failures. A multitude ot persons who had for years borne ail the worry and pain that catarrh can inflict testify to radical cures wrought by Ely's Cream Balm.
