STATE AUD NATIONAL ISSUES.

Hon. John M. .Butler at tlie Court House on Democratic Dishonesty. Hon. Johu M. Butler, our ionaer distinguishod fellow-citizun, addressed a court room full of attentive listeners last Tuesday night, lie was escorted by the band from the LaVeta hotel and introduced by C. N. Williams, Chairman of the Republican Central Committee, and without any preliminary remarks began his speech. Ho liist discussed our largo and rapidly increasing State debt. When the Republicans came into power in in 1861 the legacy left by tho Democratic party was a State debt of S10,179,2()7. From I860 to 1870 tlio Republicans wore in power and notwithstanding the great drain made upon our resources on account of the war the debt during those ten years was roduced to $-1,167,507, a reduction of $0,011,760. From 1S70 to 1880 the the State was controlled by tho Democratic party and the debt was increased $830,671. From 1880 to 1884 tho Republicans were in control and the debt was decreased $121,571* Since 1881 the Democrats have through a most villainous gerrymander had control of the Legislature, and this body has so managed affairs that the debt is now $8,540,615, and increasing at the rate of $300,000 a year. And the Democrats propose no policy for the payment of the debt, except ,to continue to borrow money to pay interest thus increasing it year by year. Mr, Butler then discussed the singlo tax theory as proposed by the leading Democratic paper of the State. After passing in review other State issues he took up national questions, touching on minority rule in Congress, the pension bill, the silver bill and the tariff. On all these questions he was clear, forcible and logical. No person who heard him could gainsay or successfully refute any statement of fact or the argument used to establish his propositions. It is safe to suy that no Democratic speaker will be able to answer this gi eat speech.
