THE kick that Brooksliire gave the late Samuel J. Randall last Saturday evening was in the nature of dead lion being kicked by a live BBS.
IT will be observed that Brookshire did not explain his vote on the inter national copyright law. He failed to fulfill his promise to Maurice Thomp son.
WILL some one kindly point to some paragraph in any Democratic paper which denounces the efl'orts ia Mississippi to disfranchise 150,000 American citizens.
BJJOOKSHJRE'S inteiest in Tom Heed will begin to log and from this on he will devote his time to explaining Grover Cleveland's position on the silver question.
BKOOKJIIKE'S speech Saturday night was heard in Ileed's district and the result is that the despised Speaker in reelected by the largest majority he ever received—over 4,500. Hurrah for Reed!
Hi. RE is another free-trade admission. The Nuw York Times favors in ternational copyright because it would relieve American authors from unfair competition." Precisely, and pray tell us why the same rulo should not be ap plied to those who work witu tUoi hands.
SENATOK WISDOM has promptly provided a remedy for the financial embarrassment in the Eastern trade centers by oil'-ring to redeem $20,000,000 of 41 per cent, bonds due in 1891, without any rebate of interest. This should be sufficient to esse the market and avert all danger of a panic.
BHOOKSHIKE in his speech Saturday night eulogized the Democratic party as being the party of Graver Cleveland. Almost in the same breath he stated that the Democratic party was in favor of the free coinage of silver. With Mr. Cleveland's well known anti-silver views it is hard to reconcile Yory's two statements.
THE Indiana Democrats have adopted the longest platform of the season, and yet it doesn't contain a word in explanation of the fact that they have creased the State debt from §4,000,000 to $8,000,000 within the last eight years, and that they are now vainly trying to sell $600,000 of bonds to meet a deficiency ol revenue for State expenses.
IF there have ever been a set of badly fooled men they ara now sitting in the Senate of the United States. The men ^aforesaid are Democratio Senator# who •have been awaiting with anxiety the
Boene of a total split in the Republican majority over the reciprocity feature of tbe tariff. They have been ohuclcling for weeks over the row in prospect, and they are disgusted, they say, with the faoility with which the Republican Sen ators swallowed Blaine's dose, as they call it. To find Republican the main supporters of the reciprocity idea has addled their brains, and they have not even yet. caught on to the diccussion but continue to talk about pages of the tariff bill which were passed weeks ago,
HON. JOHN L. WILSON,it would seem has the call to a Becond term in Congress from Washington, and that, too without muoli opposition judging from the tone of the Republican press of that State. The Sprague Herald says it "i no judge of publio sentiment if a delegate is chosen this fall who does not pledge himself to work anu vote for Wilson first, last and all the time, without compromise and condition. John L. Wilson oocupies precisely the same position this fall in the hearts cf Lin coin county Republicans, that John B, t: Allen did last fall." The Ccour d'Alene
City Times says: "John L. Wilson will be re-elected by a larger majority than before, for he has shown his perfect ability, and by liis hard labor, earnest endeavors, and having kept full faith with the people, he lias endeared him self to them, and they will reward faithful a servant."'
BIIOOKSHIRE'S SPEECH.
THE VIALS OF HIS WEATH POURED OUT ON SPEAKER EEED.
A Scranpy Jargon of Phrases With Little Rhyme and Less Roason.
The Hon. E. V. Brooksliire opened the campaign for the Democrats in this county by making his first speech in the court house Saturday night. The meeting was called to order by Jas. M. Sellars, and at his request Gen. ManBon acted as president, who with a few brief remarks eulogizing Mr. Brookshire's actions in Congress, introduced the speaker. Mr. Brooksliire began by saymg:
There are many of you here to-night, who no doubt do not understand exaotly how the House of Representatives is organized, and what great power tvie speaker of the House has. He is virtually the head and shoulders of tlio Republican party. You all know that in the present Congress, Thos. B. Reed, of Maiue, is the speaker of the House, and to him the entire Republican party is compelled to bow. To show you the great power of this man, is to say he selects and forms the committees of the House of Representatives and especially the committee on Ways and Means. This committee has the power to levy a tax on the people and shape all appropriations that go through Congress. These committees are selected by Mr. Reed to carry out any views he may have. These committees bring into the House of Representatives just such bills as Mr. Reed may wish them to bring, and therefore when a debate upon any one of these bills oomes before theHouse, Mr. Reed can recognize just suoii men as favor his interest. Mr. Brooksliire then skipped to the Hon. Samuel J. Randall, and had a few words to say on the tariff question. He did not deal with this leading Democratic gentle man as one would have supposed. He said that the Democratic party told Mr. Randall that when he left the party route laid down by the Democratic party and by Grover Cleveland, and went off on his protective views, that tile Democratic party says to Mr. Randall, "You are a good man, a smart man and a brainy man, and we all like you very much, but we do not like your views on the tariff question, and therefore you can no longer ocoupy your exalted position as Speaker of the House for the Democratic party, and in his stead we called the Hon. John G. Carlisle, one of the greatest tariff re form men of his day. He favored the principles of the Democratic party in all its phases, and also the unlimited coinage of silver, also cheap clothing and wearing apparel of every description for tho people. Returning again to Mr. Reed and after abusing him up one side and down the other as being a
Republican, he says: "I will tell you what Sir. Reed is in favor of. As-early a the 47 th Congress, large tracts of land, as large as given to railroads, for the purpose of Duilding lines through unocoupied country. To use an illustration, 1 will say that tho Northern Pacific was given a, land grant through the Northwest of every alternating section of land. From Duluth, at the west terminus of Lake Superior to Portland, Oregon, when the time was up for the road to have completed its line, it had completed its road no farther west than Bismark, Dakota, and according to the contract it had with the government it forfeited all of the land along the unfinished part of the road. But again, in June, _1832, this Mr. Reed reported a bill again in favor of the Northern Pacific railroad, giving -it 50,000,000 acres which had duly been forfeited by the government. This shows the style of this man, and that his work is directly in the interest of railroad monopoly. Again Mr. Reed brought in the tariff bill of which he plays the gag rule of allowing only four day's debate. During the four day's there were two hundred amendments made to this bill, reducing the tax by these amendments on clothing, carpets and wearing apparel, and yet the same
Reed without giving due consideration to the interest of the masses of people, especially the poor people, and more especially the farmer, did he push that bill through, without due/jonsideration, leaving out all those two undred amendments and pleas from the masses asking for a reduction. The silver coinage bill was drafted so as to put the entire bill at the discretion and ,in the hands of the Treasurer—whether he should coin so muoh silver after 1891, or whether he would discontinue it en tirely. The Democratic party was for free unlimited coinage of silver, while the Republican party was for putting a restraint and limiting the coinage to 4,500,000 ounces a month. Hundreds of farmers have petitioned for free coin' age, but Mr. Reed said NO. Because would make silver on the same par as gold, and that there was a wide differ' ence in the precious metal. Mr. Brooksliire then went on to explain how there oould be a great panic a panic even greater than the one of '72 oould grow out of that. When the government bonds were to be redeemed, they would be paid in gold and silver, and the money sharks of New York would run the gold and silver off to Europe and make the government pay enormous premiums to get the gold to pay these bonds. That these bonds were not pay able in silver certificates, but in hard money. Mr. Brookshire then attacked the force bill, and showed that it wad one of Mr, Rood's measures and was not at all needed in the South or elsewhere,

In Mr. Reed's district in Maine, he has a Republican majority of about 700,and to show you again what kind of a man he is and his manner of carrying campaigns in his own district, is that on March 24, last, a bill was presented asking for the appropriation of $3,000, 000 to be used in repairing the Kitting Navy Yards in his district. The sole purpose of thin appropriation was to im port enough men into these navy yards so as to make Mr. Reed's eleotion sure. Mr. Brooksliire then read from
so some paper the protest of Mr. Hitchcock and

Republican members against this appropriation and said it wasn't needed. But, gentlemen, this is not the only case where the Republican party have used the United States Treasury for election purposes.
My views on the tariff are these: First I am in for taxing the incomes of the rioh. A few years ago we had but few millionaires in this country, and now there is reported to be more than 10,000 millionaires in the United States to-day. These are the men I am in for taxing. No class of men receive such protection. They live in their fine houses they drive in their fine carriages around the city of Washington, and come there and spend their winters at hotels, paying as high as $6 per day. It is estimated that 2,500 people in the United States own one half of its entire wealth, and PAY NO MOLLE TAXES THAN THIS AUDIENCE. Mr. Brooksliire then went back to the tariff question and went over the old list, showing how the cheap classes of gcods was taxed and how low the taxes were on the fine goods, statiLg that a woman's course shawl was taxed 200 per cent, while a fine one was only taxed 33 per cent. Therefore, she would haye,to

shawl and two days to pay the taxes on He then went to the poor farmer, showing how he was groaning under the heavy mortgage debt all over the country, and were almost swamped in it that 47 per cent, of the farms in Michigan were mortgaged for 47 per cent, of their value. He then took up Mr. Blaine's case and spoke of his great and brilliant mind as a leader, but stated that Mr. Blaine oonld plainly see that this high protection was not what suited tiie masses of the people, and therefore he had introduced anew feature, known as reciprocity with the countries of South America. He then went on tD explain what this reciprocity meant between the above referred to countries, but if such a soheme as this was entered into, he thought it should be between tiis country and Great Britain, beoaise it is from that country we buy thecheapest olass ef goods, and that is the principle the Democratio party, to purohase cheap goods for laboring people It was upon this platform that the Hon Grover
Cleveland fell by the sting of tlB manufacturer. But the work of rebrm will still go on. If I am eleoted to ihe next. Congress, (a voioe cried out rom the rear of the house, "you will be!') I will do my part as a publio servantto every man who calls upon me, whileholding this high offioe. Thanking youfor your attention, I bid you good nighl
