Do Indiana tax payers think it good policy to have tlie State running in debt at the rate of §400,000 a year.
THE mortgage wliioh the people of Indiana have most cause to fear is that growing out of the increase of the State debt, which will continue so long as the voters continue to elect Democratic legislatures.
BuTiUDOZER Green Smith, in a speech at Frankfort a few days since, said the battle cry of the unterrifled Democracy this year would be free trade and damn the soldier. There is no question but what free trade will damn the soldier, and materially reduce the size of his quarterly pension.
THE report of the census bureau on State indebtedness reveals the fact that the State debt of Indiana has increased nearly six times as much as the debts of all other States oombined. This is something that should set all candid men to thinking. If this thing continues, who can estimate the probable levy of State taxes in the future, if the dept is ever paid?
GAIT. JOHN E. CLEIILAND has been named by the Republican Central Committee of Marion county, to fill the vacancy on the Legislative ticket caused by the declination of Oapt. Eli Lilly. This is a most excellent selection and in fact could not be improved on. Capt. Clelland iB a graduate of Wabash oollege, was a soldier of untarnished record, a citizen of the highest standing, and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. His nomination indicates that the Republicans of Marion county mean business.
AT a recent meeting of the Grangers' conference at Chautauqua, N. Y., a free trade advocate took ocoasion to denounce the tariff and the McKinley bill, when Mortimer Whitehead, the national lecturer of the order, replied as follows: "I congratulate you on the progress the Grange is making. During this year we haye already established nearly double the number of the Granges that were established in the whole of 1889, and last year there were more new Granges than in any other year of the decade. There is no possible way of getting an accurate record, but we think •we have now a membership of upward ,of 1,000,000 in good standing, with a following of, perhaps, 2,000,000 more. WE are proud of the McKinley bill, which secures us a fair measure of proi. lection. With an increase of duty on liny from §2 to §4, and a raising of that on potatoes and eggs to 25 cents a bushel and 5 cents a dozen, we are able to defy the pauper farmer of Europe and to hold our own with the merchant and the manufacturer. It is only fair that the workman who receives better wages should pay us better prices."
A Fumlly Jewel.
Dr. David Kennedy, of Rondout, N. Y., the famous surgeon and pbysicinn, has sent us a copy of nis book. "How to Cure Kidney, Liver and Blood Disorders." It is work which should be read in every home, lor the value of medical lessons alone. It contains also many life illustrations and two fascinating stories from the widely known author, "Ned Buntline." Anyone sending their address with name of this paper to Dr. Kennedy, will receive the Book free by mail.

A HOME INDUSTRY.
The Wanders of a Big Liaundry—A Machine' That Can Iron a Shirt in a Minute.
It is strange, but a fact, nevertheless, that a person will visit all the factories and places of interest in every town but his own. The average Crawfordsville citizen knows very little of the aotual workings of our "home industries." For instance take such a thing as a laundry and hardly a man knows the processes by whioh his shirt bosom is made so immaculately white. But in reality there is nothing more interesting than to visit a steam laundry with all the latest improvements.
A JOURNAII reporter happened to step into the American Steam Laundry yesterday on a little business when the genial proprietor, W. R. Gosnell, offered to act as guide on a trip through the establishment. The invitation was gladly accepted and after a few more travellers were attached to the party the journey began. It was decided to tako a shirt as a fair example and follow it through its various experiences. When the trip was over the poet of the party declared that he felt so inspired that he could write a poem equal to Hood's "Song of the Shirt."
Beginning at
ttlie
beginning we were
shown the immense steel boiler where steam is generated to propel all the numerous machines we afterward saw and where the wash water is heated. This water is conveyed by pipes to the washing machine where the shirt gets its first ducking. This machine is simply a large cylinder enclosing a smaller one, the smaller one revolving. The first suds is used an hour, then follows a second sude of a half hour succeeded by four rinsings and a blueing. Before starching the shirt is put in

the dry room and partially dried. The ^starching machine is a triangular box made to revolve on a shaft. Into it are placed starch and clothes, the belt is fcurne don and a few revolutions do the work. Our shirt next goes to the drying room where it becomes thoroughly dry in a half hour. This drying room is a curious thing. On the outside it presents the appearance of a panelled wall but the panels only prove to be what might be called very large drawers set up on edge. They can bo pulled out like drawers so that instead of going into the dry room (which might give you a foretaste of purgatory it is so hot)you are enabled to bring the dry room out to yourself. Steam pipes furnish the heat. Yesterday the dry room happened to contain a number of rag carpets. The party expressed some surprise at this but Mr. Gosnell replied they laundried anything from carpets to the finest of lace.
Washed, rinsed, blued, starched and dried our shirt is now ready for the most interesting and important stage of its journey from dirt to cleanliness, the ironing. The new Empire shirt ironer is the pride of the whole establishment. It was purchased at Chicago just a few days ago and Mr. Gosnell says it cannot be excelled any where in the country. The shirt is placed in position and an expert can put the finest gloss on the bosom in the short space of 60 seoonds. The rest of the garment is ironed by hand but a body ironer will soon be put in so that everything but the sleeves can be done by machinery.
The shirt is then ready for wear. But we have failed from laok of space to mention, the oollar and cuff ironer, the "Little Giant" ironer and numerous other minor applianoes. There are also several hand washing machines for cleansing laces, flannels, and colored clothes. Since Mr. Gosnell purchased the laundry of J. K. Alandin he has rearranged it, improved it with the latest machines and had the walls nicely papered so that the room presents a neat and clean appearance. He now employs eight hands of whom oae half are women but so rapidly is his business increasing that he soon expects to have twice that number at work. In a conversation that ensued just before leaving, one of the party inquired whether he used any aoids in cleaning clothes. "Nothing injurious ever touches the clothes in this laundry," quickly responded Mr. Gosnell. "A great many laundrymen use ohloride of lime but I do not." "What is the capacity of your laundry?" spoke up another. "If necessary," said Mr. Gosnell, "I ODuld turn out as many as 1,000 shirts a day."
Mr. Gosnell is an extremely pleasant gentleman and the party were glad to hear him say that he would be here permanently. He was born and raised at Newark, O., but is more reoently of Bloomington, Ills. For three years he served in the Union Army as a member of the 39th Illinois, during whioh time he was wounded three times and was present at Lee's surrender to Grant

The usual treatment of catarrh is very unsatisfactory, as thousands of despairing patients can testify. A trustworthy medical writer says: "Proper local treatment is positively necessary to suocess, but most of the remedies in general use by physicians afford but temporary benefit. A cure cannot be expected from snuffs, powders, douches and washes." Ely's Cream Balm is a remedy which combines the important requisites of quick action, specific curative power with perfect salet.y and pleasantness t0 the patient.
