It is one uf tin- n*m irkiiM results of a h«'atMl politii-al campaign tlial men I sliotilc! he found ur^in^ working nicn to voto for (Jrov. ('h'V(»Jan(l in prol'eienco to Benjamin Harrison. In calmer times no candid man would sn^K^t such a preference. (Irovcr Cleveland represents a party that lias made three notable stnij^leH in the past forty years, Tim first was to perpetuate and extend a system under which lahor j^ot no wa^cs at all ami which forced all paid lahor to compete with it. The next was to depreciate the money in which lahor was paid. And the third is to put American lalnir upon an equality with that ol' Kurope.
Tin* party which proposes to make Benjamin Harrison president lias opposed all these tilings. (irover Cleveland has personally pme upon record in opposition to more measures in the interest .»!' workin^nien than any .hlie man of his time. As ^ov-| ornor of Now York lie vetoed: 1. The mechanicsMion law. giving workiu^men a lien upon buildings tosecuro their wages. 2. The hill making employers responsible for injuries to woi kingmen happening through imperfect machinery or insecure buildings, without reference to the employes' conduct. II. The tonement-hDuse cigar bill, forbidding the manuf.'ieture of cigars in tenement buildings. 4. The bill compelling the elevated railroads to charge cents fare, instead of 10. 5. The printer's bill, requiring all the state printing to be done by union workmen. t'i. The bill making ten hours a legal day's work for all street-ear employes. 7. The hill abolishing convict labor in prisons.
The bill providing for the inspection of t»rii-s where children were employed. and forbidding the eniploy-ineiit-:of'children under fourteen years of age. A.t-gnvcrnor be signed: 1. A bill compelling stationary engineers
New.'Vol p-» pay a. lieon.-e fee of sj or b«» d, l.ct.rr.'d from follow ing their
i!. A bill tn I'edueo the fees of harbor pilots fur the. In nelil ol' foreign steamship monopolies.
As president of ihe United States lie vetoed a bill to establish a depart nient of labor and make the secretary thereof a cal'ihet i»S)icer.
All these are public acts and known of all men. *1 he proof of them does not rest upon vague and »nt radictory statements of pnrti-an agitators as to what soino one is reported tohave said years ago. and of which no record was made by anybody at the time. They conclusively show a deliberate and steady hostility to measures of interest to workingmen—a hostility that found oppression in important public acts which inii-t have been the result-of udy and relied ion. l»il any public man ever make such a record hi so bri'-f a cai"erir It certainly requires audacity bordering upon the sublime jo urge workingmen to vote for rover flevela'ud in preference to Benjamin Harrison. i'-

He was riglu. The*e are historical facts known to everybody, or at least accessible to all who desire to know the facts. The Know-nothing party had its greatest, strength in Democratic states. The givat Know-nothing riots occurred in Democrat ic cities. The bulk of tho Know-nothing voto went to the Democratic party. The idea of proscribing any race, color, nationality, or religion has never found any footing or favor in the Republican party. The Democratic party is the party of proscription.

Second. The Knights of Labor connected with district assembly lull, ami with the local assemblies represented by district assembly 100, did not know of the existence of such a letter till its publication in the Indianapolis newspapers, more than three weeks after .the date it was alleged to have been written.
Third. We denounce and condemn the action of Kdwin F. (iould as wicked and malicious, and doing a great wrong to otirorder. i. being well understood, and part of the law governing our order, thai political action shall not he taken bv an assembly.
Fourth. It is fully understood by the members of the K, of L. in this city that Kdwin F.
