As a farmer. 1 wish to talk to my bjvthrcn on th" (pu'stiosts of tlu» surplus. tlu« taritl' »ud few kindred siihjs-ts in a manner that can be readily undoistood. As an illusira in 1 will fito the oxperioiu'o of my father and a Mr. Allen, who s«.*\eral years a^o came to Michigan and each purchased a farm, the highway only dividing their places. They only had enoiitrh means to pro,-ure their land, and there were hous*s to build and stock to buy they wore compelled to nu.-e money by mortgaging their land, which they i»neh did to the amount of giving t«-n notes of $100 at 4 jvr cent., out* note an»l interest on wh«lc, Payable yearly. Things woiked along smooth until a drought eomjjelled thetn to give a second nurtgago of 0.1 seven years' time to enable them to hold their places.

About this time a mutual friend started a mill in the city of lWtroit for the ])roduction of a land fertilizer. Father and Allen were induced by this friond \Smith, by name) to in vast iu a few barrels of his fertilizer, which proving an excellent Article, caused them both to procure enough the following year to scatter over the whole farm. The consequence was that the most unprecedented croj—the like of which they had never figured on—was secured. This year they had a good round surplus as tho result of the well applied fertilizer.

Father goes to the bank and finds six of his one hundred dollar notes with interest unpaid. As they called for interest the total would make $t84. After some parley he bought the notes for 5^k4, saving $.' by doing so. His sH.*ond mortgage remaineil, but he concltided that ctmhl easily be met, so built some needed fences and made other improvements with the balance of his surplus.

Alien, on the other hand, was stunned at his enormous surplus besides he had attended stuiie indignation meetings held by the farmers in tho community, protesting against Smith for charging high prices for his fertilizer. It was a well known fact that fcruiith went into the business with b'ut very little capital, and now ran around in a top buggy with fast horses ami tine clothes, employed l*n men, and seemed to In rolling in wealth. lie (Allem wnuM not increase his wealth if lie knew himself and wouUl have no more «.»f hi expensive fertilizer. Time roiled on—father had ids well improved place all clear. Allen-well he sold half of his pluce to clear the other half.

Now, if the reader will simplify the Tinted States finauces, make the twinled debt tho fanner's mortgage, the tariff the fertilizer, he will readily comprehend tho whole question as between a protective tariff and free trade. The tariff increases the government's wealth, builds up factories who employ thousands of men, and no one tho loser but the foreigner. Now we will leave it to the reader, be his politics what they may, if this illustration is not a fair one, and by a little thought make the issue plain and unmistakable.

The last campaign was won by tho Democrat free traders by Kie hue ami cry of over ninety million surplus heaped in the treasury. Cleveland admits, in his letter of acceptance, that there is now over one hundred ami thirty millions, and all this time the law has permitted his secretary to pay out of this surplus a premium for outstanding bonds. The Republicans want this surplus paid out just this way. They want to continue the tariff (the fertilizer), pet the debt paid off, keep the factories and men employed and continue the general prosperity. The Democrats want to reduce the surplus by stopping the tariff, doing away with the fertilizer and let Smith and his men shift as Itest they can. Farmers, you certainly have distinguishing business faculty enough to decide on which side of this issue you will vote.

A Series of Kol1«irle.

Saturday night seemed to be prolific in robberies as soverul are reported. 'JVrry Holmes suffered perhaps more than the others in a pecuniary way. The thieves entered his sleeping room by way of an outhouse and open window, taking his clothing, throwing them through the window, where they were ritled of about $100 in money, and a find gold watch and chain, worth perhaps inure, making his loss about $201).

George Keller, living at the corner of Walnut and Market streets, had his house entered about o'clock Sunday morning. Mrs. Keller heard the noise and called out, thinking it was one of her sons, but receiving no reply, awoke Mr Kellor, but by the time he got out of bed the rascals were gone. The thieves scoured about four dollars in money ami two silver watches.

George Enoch came to town and left his horse and buggy hitched in the rear of commercial block, but when he went to start home, found the horse and harness gone and the buggy left alone. The animal was a fine one, valued at ?l."»o.

Up to this evening 110 trace of. tlie thieves has been discovered.

Miss Hattie Martin, daughter of J. M. A. Martin, living on west Market street, had i\ narrow escape Sunday night. She thought she heard some one trying to get into the house, ami climbed out of the window onto the roof of a porch, and while looking over to discover the identity of the intruder, lust her balance and feli to the giound. turning a complete somersault in her descent, but beyond a severe shaking up suffered no serious injury. It was a remarkable fali that no bone* were broken as the distance troru the toot to the ground tafully twelve feet.

The trial of the new electric lights last night was not satisfactory. A twelve hundred candle power light is not sutllcieiit to light the streets with a light at alternate crossings, while a two thousand candle power in business rooms is stronger than necessary. The Council should have contracted for the strongest light, or place one at each crossing. No blame can be attneted to the Light Company as they are filling their contract but there Is 110 mistake about the weakness of the adopted light. For the amount paid for lighi, seventy orbs should give us a blaze of glory all over the city.

Many forget that the hair and scalp need cleansing. Kxtensiw use of Arer's Hair Vigor lias proven that it is the best cleansing agent for the hair to renewed growth.

We are willing to bear personal testimony to the ellicaev ami value of Hood's Sarsapanlla, which we have been advertising some years in our (taper, having used it for biood impurities with grant success. It is a preparation of standard merit, made of perfectly pure ingredients and thoroughly effective in cleansing and purifying the system. For eruptions, boils, etc.. it an be relied upon every time.
