SATURDAY, OCT. t, 18£S.

WE

call on the whole brood of

Democratic speakers in this county to explain to the people they address why sugar should be taxed OS per cent and salt be put on the free list, and why rice should be taxed 100 per cent and lumber be put 011 the free list. Come, gentlemen, and tell us of the great Democratic principle upon which this is done.

THE

New York World (Dem.)

says: "Mr. Harrison has written a letter to brand as a lie the assertion that he once said that a dollar a day was good enough wages for a working man. Nobody of common sense ever supposed he said so. There are some campaign lies which are transparent, and this is one of them."

EIGHT

thousand minus one thous

and leaves a remainder of seven thousand. Two hundred subtracted from seven thousand leaves a remainder of six thousand, eight hundred.

THE

.IOI'KKAI.

has been

thus explicit in t.lie second elementary principle in aritheinetic for thi benefit of its primary pupil of the Wavnetowu Hornet.

Mus fioui.Aii claims, and we have no doubt truthfully, that Prohibition has done a great good in Kansas. She cannot and will not deny that it was the Itepublican party that established Prohibition in that State. And yet she is around trying to smash the Republican party. She knows that in these efforts the people of Kansas do not in the least sympathize with her.

E. 1-'. (ioL'i.D. the labor jaw-smith of Indianapolis, who has sold himself to the Democratic National Committee for the purpose of uttering slanders on Gen. Harrison, and who hopes to have credit for being a workingman 011 the sole ground that he wears a dirty shirt, was publicly denounced by Master Workman Powderly for misrepresentation. When this campaign is over Gould will be remembered as Philip and Morey, who figured in the campaign against Gen. Garfield in 1SS0, are now remembered,

IF

the British free trade system were adopted in the country the British system of direct taxation would be taken with it, and we should find the government compelling every one to pay an annual tax for the privilege of doing business and adding to the prosperity of the country. In England.a man who is an auctioneer is lined $50 a year: a banker is fined $150: house agents are lined *10: (Idlers are fined •'fl.'JD: refiners of gold or silver are lined 3J7.7.~. We call these taxes fines, because they are penalties for being enterprising. We would not like the system in this country.

TUK

and one hog weighs )!00 pounds, the average weight of the one ling is, they say, loO pounds. This is the kind of arithmetic Mr. Mills teaches down in Texas, and lie is now in Indiana teaching the same thing. It is a fortunate thing that Indiana's people know .vliat an av* erage is and how to get it. without any assistance from this juggler ol figures.

DKMOCKATS.

IT

Democratic speakers and

writers say that the average reduction of the tariff is only 7 per cent. They would have the people believe that to nut wool 011 the free list and to put a tariff of 68 per cent, on sugar will result in an average of 34 per cent, on sugar and wool. When legislators come before the people with sueh an arithmetical statement as this to prove their position, it only shows what a narrow thread their system hangs on. If no hog weighs nothing,

from the President

down, are still repeating their dismal yarn about the duty being added to the cost of articles upon which there i* a tariff. The facts are that local competition often cuts down the price of goods in this country to the European figures, but at the same time wages are kept up. The representative of a large and well-known rubber manufactory states that the average weekly wages paid by theirooncern in in 1

SCO was $".30, and in 1SS7 $11.45. an increase of over 100 per cent., and that the same goods that brought them net in 1S60 78 2-10 cents in 1SS7 brought but 42 3361000 cents: or, in other words, that they received in I860 substantially S4 per cent, more for their product than in 1S87 which shows that while the tariff has protected the labor of the workingman and increased his wages more than 100 per cent., competition has brought down the prices of the goods as above stated.

He also said that a considerable portion of the village in which theii factory is located is owned by the working men and women in their employ, the high wages that they have received enabling them iu a large number of instances to purckase homes for themselves and further, that while the result of the business showed fair returns 011 the nominal capital stock of the company, if all the money which they employed in their business had been put out at an annual interest at the moderate rate of 5 per cent., the result would have been a greater gain than they showed, making it evident that the interests of the laborers are carefully considered rather than the accumulation of the largest pos.-ible gains.

is not to be wondered at that the Democrats objected to the speech of Anna Dickinson. Her arraignment of the Democratic party was simply terrific. But there is no good morals in their lying as to what she said. The report is being vigorously circulated that her remarks were equally uncomplimentary to the war Democrats and the Democratic soldiers with the Democrat who remained at home and gave aid and comfort to the enemy both by words and acts. She made a distinction and to illustrate her meaning quoted from Judge Miller, of Ohio, who said in the Chicago Convention in 1864, that '"there was no difference between a war Democrat and a Republican. They were links from the same sausage, cut from the same dog." Our advice to our Democratic friends is to "tell the truth" concerning Anna She was kind enough to speak the truth about them.

THE

tax on salt, according to

the Democratic theory, compels every man who uses a peck of salt —and that's as much as any one man would consume in a year—to pay about one cent, and a half bounty to the salt manufacturer. This is a great injustice and a monstrous outrage. A single individual will consume, in a year, about one hundred pounds of sugar, upon which the bounty paid to the sugar planter, under the Mills bill, is about $5.40. The bill saves the poor man one cent and a half 011 his year supply of salt, and robs him of $5.40 on his year's supply of sugar. Salt is a Northern product and sugar is made in Louisana and Texas. Why don't some Democratic politician undertake to explain this singular feature of the Mills bill?

CHIEF ARTHUR, who is at the head of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, has again expressed his approval of General Harrison's course in the labor riots and on labor questions. Soon after

General Harrison was nominated Mr. Arthur said that he saw nothing in his record which should prevent any working man from voting for him. lie has recently reiterated that opinion, and in referring to the labor disturbances at iudianapolis in 1S77. he says as to General Harrison's utterances there, that in his opinion General Harrison said nothing which any honest man might not have said.

MIL. MILLS,

in his first speech in

Congress, said we should import, from England $300,000,000 worth of manufactures more than we now do, and that this would make a market in England for $300,000.000 more of our farm products. Whether this is true or not it is undoubtedly true that it would take $300.01Kl.000 worth of labor away from American workmen and give it to British workmen. It would be paying $300,000,000 annually to build up the factories of England and destroy those of America. It would be putting $300,000,000 annually into the pockets of the nabob manufactures of a foreign country and taking that much away from American manufactures who are taxed to support our schools, to build our public roads, and to support our government

statement made by Mr. McKinley about Mr. Cleveland's Secretary of War going to the English manufacturers to buy blankets for our army. A gentleman of this city wrote to Mr. McKinley for the proof of this fact. Mr. McKinley informed the gentleman that he had a letter from the Secretary of War giving a full statement of the whole affair, which he would publish whenever any Democratic member of Congress should publicly deny the facts as lie them.
