Other ToptcH of Inteient, To tlic Editor the Jout iml. IIYDK l*.\RK, Mass., August, 22,18SS.— A mid-summer letter trom this quiet, respectable suburb, could not reasonably be supposed to contain much, if anything, ol interest a class of citizens supposed bv many to be so lemote from the "Hub,"
Yet Dr. Tuttle is close by us. this week at Stoughton, and Gen. Wallace, wife and Mrs. Lane, are only a little way removed, short run at Newport. 1 read trom a Boston paper reeentlv a recognition ol the claims of the I lousier State, "as the literary center ot the West." Familiar as I am with the claims of the
Hoosder Athens." it is sometimes pleasant to see ourselves, "as others see us," especially it* we appear well. I claim that 1 am unsehish in this feeling of pride, for it is an honor to shine by retlecled light, still retaining my identity with my old friends. The writer referred to deploring the "barrenness of the West" made a notable exception ot the State ot Indiana, and says "it would be a curious subject tor the statistician to tell what there is in its soil, or climate to produce nil the notable writers of the West," I took picas-* lire in call.ng the attention of mv three trans-planted Hoosier children to the statement. I fancy, ves 1 know that in the minds ot some of the "unknowing oi es," lndfcina is still associated with "Indians," and it was with pardonable pride, that 1 read the climatic sentence of the wi tter cited, that "it would not be altogether strai ge if the Nation's literary center weie moved much nearer to its geographical center, than it now is. The "New* South" is rising. Let the West look to its laurels.
Just now, hereabouts, judging trom crowded excursion boats, one would suppose that the world was crazed for amusement. HJW hard people do'abor in that direction. It must be truly American. Rest and recreation are needed but many who most need, cannot have it. Still there is not a butcher's hand, who will not have his **two weeks otf." It is all right and 1 wish everybody could follow tui:. When old Rome made a business, however, ol "anui-ing herselt," she was on the verge ol ruin. In the rush and whirl, we must have some respite, if only ot two weeks, to restore the equilibrium of our forces, quite satisfied with that, however, in the life that now i*. never thinking ot that which i^ to come.' There is a class, not excluded, who need this rest, equally with anv, the ministers. It is not true that "while the minister* rest the devil i$ more busy." They need recuperation of spiritual force, which revives with physicn? refreshment, 'lht^e ot their people who remain at home become more iraternal in tact bv joining with others in worship. Their vacation days are not unaHovctf, or frwe Irom caie. They desetve all the rest they got.
Vacation has ics countless episodes. Or.lv three da_t ago two vonng men happy in theirs, made a dash tor that most exquisite pleasure oi a swim in :he sun, not doubting their ability to coj.e with the se Wind and wave JOSC higher and higher. They dared the contest, and were borne beyond the reaet ot lrieruh. A Jash agairt the rocks v?ns the dcath-biow to one. The living to-ght with the sea, to give up the dead. Continuing he said, "an alarming danger to our institutions came from the tact that our Protestant Amencan women are leaping around one solitary little child, while their opponents have large families and are peopling the countrv. 1 He closed his address with a grander, nobler watchword, 'ban that of Webste "The Republic, and Itee, un-sectarian schools, now and forever, one and inseparable.

In legard to what he says of the meeting there is or.e of two things very certain, he either did not attend the meeting and did not know of what he wrote, or else he wrote what he knew to he untrue as his article from beginning to end, with perhaps or.e or two statements, is one string ol lalehoods and misrepresentations. Kii st he has the names of the men who conducted the meeting both wrong, as it was Mr. Joseph l'iggott, and his son-in-law. Mr Alford, who had charge of the meeting. He toneey* the idea that thev were some tort of tramps who happened along and finding no icicles hanging on the town pitched their tents and led a sort of gypsy life while here. Instead of this being true, the facts In the case are that
Mr. Piggott commenced preaching in this neighborhood about the 15th ot March and has been preaching every two weeks since that time. So far as their denouncing the Methodist church in such bitter terms as he says thev did while thev did object to some o! the short comings of the church at this time thev claim to be Methodist according to the discipline of that church and Mr. Tiggott is laboring at this place with ami by the consent of the presiding elder ol this district, and with the consent of Rev. jessc Hill, who has charge of this circuit. They never said one word in condemnation of the organ or choir and in fact tried to procure an organ to use their meetings while here. And there was a collection taken up for their benefit and if vour correspondent had possessed any surplus cash and been disposed to tender it to them in a proper manner he would have learned that thev would accept it.
That dog tent in which he savs they camped while here .? another emanation of his fertile brain as this community is both able and willing to board and lodge any minister of »he gosp-1 who mav come here lojpreach tor us, and the tent of which he speaks was put up lor the accommodation of Mrs. Alford. whe- had a young child to care for and it was nece*sav for her to have some place wNsre she could rest. In conclusion we would suggest to your Korre-pondent that be.ore he ogam a*.tens-pis to write up .i meeting he learns the tr^h in ihe case. As tar an the name of" our town concerned he need not let That keep him awake at night for it the citizen*", w.n endure it he certainly ought to.
