present attempt to break down the policy of protection to home industries in the extraordinary interest manifested by Knglish press and people is the result of our pending election. Kvery voter of intelligence must know that this unusual solicitude is not wholly the result of British philanthropy. They feel that "(here is millions in it." else our cousins across the water would be likely to keep at home both the monev and solicitude which they now stand credited with expending in this country. One of England's greatest generals is quoted as advising to "find out what the enemy most desires vou should do, and do the opposite." This advice is quite as sound in its application in a contest for commercial supremacy as to strategy on the battle-field. Just now England is experiencing curious business depression, especially in her agricultural and manufacturing industries, and the ablest among her statesmen are puzzling over the problem of relief. The prosperity of the United States, the disposition and ability of our people to spend money freely for the comforts and luxuries of life, quite naturally indicate this country as the most tempting field for the desired extention of British trade. At the same time it is recognized that the only road to control of American trade now supplied bv American manufactures leads over the ruins of our protective tariff system. 1 lence the aid and comfort to the party now seeking its overthrow. In this connection a glance at the condition of public sentiment in England may prove interesting and instructive. Consul Shaw, in a recent report from Manchester. says: "There is. of course, a deep anxiety manifested in this country. (England ), for the early adoption of a lower tariff in the I'nited States, and the solicitude shown in this respect proves how general is the belief here that English manufacturing would he able to close many of our milts if this course is adopted on our part." The late official report of the Cobden Club said: "In the United States President Cleveland's message carries with it the promise of such measures of tariff reform as may. in the course of ten years, make something like a revolution in international trade. The direct results of opening the markets of such a country would be enormous. The London People said:

Mr. Cleveland should be reelected. the I'nited States tariff will be modified very materially in the direction of free Trade, a result which cannot, of course, fail to be beneficial to the trade of other countries. and emphatically our own." The London Economist said: "On the adoption of free Trade bv the I nited Stales depends the greater share of English prosperity for a good many years to come," The

London Sunday Times savs: "The American election is infinitely more important to Englishmen than our own internal politics just at this' juncture. The main question at issue is English free trade against the continental system of tion. The Loudon Globe has tho following: "As a rule the Presidential contest has very little interest for the old world: on the present occasion, however, an issue is involved which very closely 'concerns Europe, more particularly Great Britain. The central issue of the contest lies between the maintenance of the present financial system intact, and its modification in the direction of Free Trade and on that broad question Mr. Cleveland's candidature naturally and necessarily carries English sympathy." The Sheffield Independent says: "The Mills Bill is viewed by all parties alike as the first decisive and certain step in the direction of Free Trade. The success of the Democrats at the Presi

dential election would necessitate their brin^in^ in another tariff reform measure upon far more advanced lines in the direction of tho abolition or reduction of duties than Mr. .Mills's present bill, and I thus accelerate the ultimate success I of rive Trade in the. States."

was asked for by the officials in the four years of Garfield and Arthur. Senator Allison also proved from the appropriation bills themselves that 000.000 more had been given to and would be expended iu the four years of ••Democratic economy and reform" than were expended in the four previous years under Republican rule. Twentyfour million dollars a year is a pretty high price to pay for Democratic economy and reform.

for the Republican

campaign still goes on among oldtime Democrats. Scarcely a day passes that does not record the enlistment of some prominent Democrats for 11arrison and Morton on the line of protection. These cases are more conspicuous in New York. New Jersey and Connecticut than elsewhere and there is ju.-t where they are most useful. Even conversion among the leading merchants and manufacturers and farmers represents several votes the same direction. The growth of .Republican sentiment is hcalthv and encouraging.

I Tin: Republicans cf Indiana. I New York and New Jersey have taken firm stand on the platform of high license a.- the best means of promoting tempeiance. There can lie do doubt, that, their action will be approved at the polls. A great majority of the voters are temperance men, and they must finally enroll themselves with the parly that fights the grog shops politics.

To hear a Democrat talk, or to read a Democratic newspaper one would think that the Democratic party was the sworn enemy of capitalists. monopolists and corporations, but its acts are different. Its National Campaign Committee consists almost exclusively of railroad and coal mine magnates, representing not less than forty railroad monopolies.
