The ltemocratic Central Comniittee of Montgomery county is circu

Far as possible, is entirely consistent with our definition of free trade, as it is with that of every political economist the world over, so far as 1 am able to learn. And I have to say that no revision of the tariff which does not look to freu trade, thus defined, as its end and object, will be satisfactory either to nie individually, or the league I have the honor fo represent. We demand, .specifically, that no sudden and violent revision of the tariff shall he made,

speech and among other things said: On behalf of the Iowa State Free Trade Leauge. I beg leave to submit to you a consideration a summary of facts and opinions bearing oil the question of tariff revision. As a preface to the important fact which shall present, allow me to say that the league which I present, and which now has about fifty active branches in the State of Iowa has declared in a platform, adopted at one of its regular meetings that any tariff at till must be a disturbing element in some line or lines of business, and that the only tax on I imports which should ever he tolerated by a free people is a tariff for revenue only. A tariff solely for revenue, with all incidentally protective features carefully avoided so

tariff has been taken off and

put oil hundreds of articles from

time to time, during the last eighty

years, and yet no one can point to an instance where putting on a

tariff made the price of an article

higher, or taking it off made it lower. This what Robert .1. Wal

ker in 1804, called a "mystery."

And to the Democrats it is a mystery, but it is all perfectly plain to Republicans.

Tin-: following appears in the

Mills tariff bill and is the free

whisky plank of the Democratic party: ''All clauses of section

".Ml of the Revised Stautes and all laws amendatory thereto which im

pose any special tax upon manu

facturers of stills, retail dealers in liquors, and retail dealers in malt liquors are hereby repealed."

a tariff of |(i per cent, is necessary.

Then why fake all the tariff from wool, lumber, and other Northern

the wheat raisers in this country 'JO cents on the bushel.
