EX-GOVERNOR PORTER has written a letter to Hon. lienry U. Johnson in which he emphasizes his determination made public last February that he will not be a candidate for Governor before the approaching State convention. lie says that he could not accept the nomination if tendered him.
W.L. SCOTT, the Pennsylvania coal baron, has subscribed a million dollars to the Democratic campaign fund. To make that million dollars the "trust" has put on 2f» cents to each ton of anthracite coal, and every consumer of hard coals must contribute his share to furnish Democratic boodle.
THIS week the Frankfort Banner be^an the publication of a daily naper. Its semi-weekly edition will be discontinued and the weekly resumed. The Banner is a most excellent Republican paper and has done good work in redeeming Clinion county from Democratic ring rule. THE JOIK.VAI. wishes the Banner success in its new field.
OCK people should remember that the honor of Montgomery county is involved and that it demands the largest possible turnout on the occasion of the Harrison visit on the 3d prox. The railroad rates are low and almost everyone can afford to go. Let as nearly everybody in the county go as possible. It is not a men partisan affair, but it involves •'State pride and National patriotism and the people of all parties should ifei-1 interested and make it a point to participate.

ED. H. Brass, formerly of the Frankfort Banner, has bought a one-half interest in the Frankfort Daily News. Mr. Burns is a good newspaper man, and the News will not suffer by the acquisition.
DEMOCRATIC leaders, one and all, are showing signs of a panic. Every gale that sweeps from the north brings to thier ears long lists of names of Democrats who are moving outof the free trade camp and joining the army of protection.

passing over the country, and in many places almost obliterating the very organization of the Democratic party. Congressman West, of the Saratoga district, says that in Cohoes, Troy, Schenectady, and other manufacturing centers in that vicinity, the employers and employes who have heretofore voted the Democratic ticket will, nearly to a man, vote for Harrison and Morton.

correct. The recent
ience of F.nglaud under the .policv now advocated for country shows that cheaper from India, cheaper meat
America, cheaper wool from Australia and South America, have made unprofitable lands at home that values of English farms have fallen otf40 to 70 percent, while each year large tracts are withdrawn from tillage.
If a like result of cheapness is to follow an approach to free trade here, nn alternative is presented which is well for a large class of our people to serious consider before aiding to strike dowu the policy under which our country has hitherto made such advances in wealth and greatness.
We may well be appalled in contemplating a shrinkage in real estate values in the United States to one half the extent experienced in England, and the losses of farms and homes it would entail upon those industrious toilers who have incurred debts in securing homes for themselves and families. Under a decline of one fourth its present value the man who had bought a home for f'J.OOO and by years of industry and saving paid *1,000. would still find himself owing Si.000 for property worth but §1.50 ). In the midst of the "cheapness" with which he had been cajoled, the payment of this sum would be more difficult than the original §2,000 under existing conditions of ready sale of products and fair returns for labor. If the adoption o£ the English policy by the United States should be followed by one half the reduction in real estate values that England has experienced within the past few years mortgaged farms and homes would revert by thousands to creditors who, like the landlords of England, would permit what could not be rented to go out of tillage.
In no other country than ours does so large a percentage of farmers own the land they cultivate. In no other country is there so large a proportion of workingmen who own the homes they occupy. In no other country does the fiscal policy so decidedly favor the man who honestly and industriously endeavors to better his condition in life. No whereel.se in the world can the laborer get so manv of the necessaries and comforts of life for a day's .vork as here in the United States. All this we are asked to menace by adopting a policy that has thrice brought disaster to che business of this country a policy, with but one aggressive advocate among all the nations of Europe, and that one nation to-day presenting within her borders some of the strongest possible arguments against the policy she seeks to enforce upon others. While the Cobden Club and leading British journals are preaching the benefits o£ free irade the British farmer is depressed, 800,000 workmen are idle, and the police of London are kept busy suppressing uprisings of men made desperate by hearing their children cry for bread. Nothing can be dearer than ''cheapness" bought at such a price: nothing more un-American than a policy which makes such a condition possible.,

!SI:mik-r and libel have always beon favorite Democratic weajions in 1'residential contests, and it is not creditable to the character of our people that they have often done the work designed by their authors. For a quarter of a century Henry Clay was pursued by Democratic leaders with tho old libel that he voted for Adams for President in 1825, upon a corrupt bargain that Adams should make him his Secretary of State. There is no doubt that this wicked charge did much to elect Mr. Polk ill 1844. But instead of doing any permanent injury to the reputation of Mr.Clay, there is no man on earth who now believes a word of it, and the only permanent result of it is the blasted

rison by the of the Democratic the part he took in settling the great railroad strike at Indianapolis in 1SS7 will only result in damaging thosa who resort to such mean and unmanly methods of political warfare. There are too many men in all political parties to-day who detest such methods to make them any longei available, and if the wicked lies now told about Gen. Harrison do not result in giving him a bigger vote than he otherwise would get. we shall be greatly mistaken in our estimation of the sense of fair plav that now exists in this country.
CIRCULARS are being scattered all over this county, and it is presumed all over the State, with the infamous lie about Geueral Harrison's saying that "a dollar a day and two meals are enough for a working man.'' The man who distributes these circulars knows that a thousand dollars has been offered bv the Indianapolis Journal, and the offer is kept standing at the head of the columns of that paper. 13 anv person who can produce the speech or name the time when such a speech was made. It will be noticed that the offer remains not taken. Hard up, indeed, must be the party that resorts to such infamous lying to delude the ignorant and unthinking voter.
In" .1882 Prof. Sumner, the great free trade blatherskite, of Yale College, appeared before the Tariff Commission and urged that our tariff rates be divided by two—that it be reduced one half—and that such a reduction would result in a vast increase of importations and a doubling of the revenues in the custom houses. But now it is urged by the Brigadiers of the South that the way to reduce the supply is to reduce the tariff. Those "tariff tinkerers" can never agree among themselves, except thnt thev want free trade.
WII.I.IAM ALTER PHELI'.S says that the third party in New Jersey is not going to affect the result. He thinks Gen. Fisk will not get more than two-thirds the vote he received when he ran for Governor two years ago. The tariff. Mr. Phelps thinks, will be the leading issue, as nearly every industry of New Jersey is dependent upon production. and in such a contest the third party and the Democrats vote will lose, while the Republicans will gain.
