At ('I.icngo I It'iiudi'd tlie ('., K. q. at 1 ::»i the saim- evening. Although tho "strike was on" nothing of importance happening until we hied to pass a wreck about, four miles from the city. About llitt.-eii minutes belon* wc got thine it appeared that two freight trains tried to pass each other on the same track, nut the passenger track, and the result was one locomotive had climbed fetpiarelv on top of the other, and the freight cars of both trains wore scattered proiuisi uousIv nbotit. One ran reuch so close to the passenger track that a portion of its roof iiad to be cut away before we could pass, which detained us fully on- hour and a half. Strange as it may appear no one was injured i»y the collision. I suppobe 1 that wreck has been cleared away by thin time and all is serene M. that, particular place, and tlie ignorant engineer^ who tried to pass each otheron the same track got the (i. B. After leaving tin wreck nothing happened to break the monotony of the Hying train until we slowed up to cross the "Fathers of

WateiV a little aTter daylight. I thought "such a father of water*." It looked to me like a gr at big duck pond about a mile across it lllled lull of bushy islands. After passing over this miserable excuse for a river we struck the beautiful city (I mean in the summer timet of Jiurlington, Iowa. 1 have read of the imperial city ot Koine'standing on her seven hills, but it appeared to me that this city was standing on more than a thousand Kills, save a few buildings near the track which seemed to he stuck ih a ^e:t of mud.

I intended to stop o|T at Mount Pleasant. where 1 am now, but on account of the strike some of the trains had been abandoned and the others were miming so irregularly that good and kind conductor told me I had butter continue my journey on that train if I expeeted lo get to Kussell. Lucus county. Iowa, before Saturday night, and then cotne back to Mount Pleasant next week. Your correspondent was not hard to persuade to stick to that train. So we sped on J:hd ,'Ui jiassing hamlet and city in tpiick succession. Some like Rurlinglon. built on a thousand hills, while others Wele stuck in the deepest, stickiest black mud 1 ever saw. until I arrived at Kussell, which was also stuck in the mini, where I allightcd and soon found my steps had brought me to the home of mv good, kind. affeetioiiHte triend, O. where

I Maid over Sunday and bad as pleasant and agreeable time as one could wish. 1 was really son when Monday came, but stern duty called me away, and here 1 am this beautiful Spring morning in the handsome ami pro«petous village of Mount. Pleasant. This ity is one ot the ohiest in ih." State and is only ten years younger than Crawfordsvilic. and like your city is called the Athens ol Jowa on account of its educational and religious privileges.almost every ndigious denomination in the country being represented here, and location of the Iowa Wesleyan I'lfiversity The people hereclaiin to be very intelligent and one gentleman told me the "big school" had furnished the county sevol 11I great men. but he failed to inform me who they were. This citv ontaittsojMiu j»eo|de antl is at least the home of one great man. Judge Jamon Harlan, and ha produced the wife of another great man. Mr. Robert Lincoln.

Mrs. Lincoln has also the distinguished honor ol being tip- daughter of Mr. Harlan. One of the hospitals for the insaiu of Iowa is located hole, and I spent ail day yesterday visiting the institution ami was well plea.-cd with itsappearance and the attention the oflicers and attendants show.-d in.' while passing through its various departments. I came to\isit my brother-in-law, Mr. James M. Simpson, once an honorable ami enterprising citizen ot Montgomery county, ami for a long time one of your valued correspondents. II• was brought here from his home in Ringgold county a year and a half ago under the pretense that he was insane. He was glad to see me and we talked together on all manner of subjects, and on most of them he appeared perlectIv sane. He talked freelv about lus condition ami seemed to realize it perfectly well I think his physical system is now much worse than his mental condition, which I regard as quite alarming. He is so weak and feeble that he reclined on hi.*, bed all the time we were conversing. His doctor and attendant both told no- that bis physical ami im-nial condition is mm better than it wrs two months ago, whii will l»e encouraging to Ms family ami friends. He dreads his confinement more than auytliing else, and wants to go lo his home, where he can enjoy the society »jf 'lis family and the fresh invigorating air of Kinggold county. 1 think if he could be discharged that it would be the best thing for him. I will say for the iutoi mat ion of his friends that he is quiet ami p« aceable. and toa stranger. on visiting him. would not know he was insane, unless informed so.

But this letter it-already tot» long, so I will closc, promising your reader* that if I live I will let them hear from 1110 again about Iowa, its towns I visit, its politics ami its prohihiiorv law. which is at this time being strictly unforced, ncai ly every citv in the Stale.
