It is'^ahl tl-.eie is a proposition pend

ing to turn the Crawfordsville Shannondale turnpike into a free road for a

specified consideration. This is a pro

ject in which the business men of Ciaw-

fords\ille are greatly interested and they

should see that it is not allowed to fail. From the region of Shanuondale theie

are two excellent free gravel roads lim

ning east and northeast, the one to Leb

anon and the other to Thorntown. The.se roads draw a great deal »»f business away

from Crawfotdsville, and unless the

Shanuondale turnpike is made into a tree

road we shall ultimately lose all the trade and business rrom the fertile region

about Shanuondale. It is said that sev

eral of the leading tanners along this

road have signilled a willingness to sub

scribe liberally towards making it free. Hon. Hannibal Trout, although he has a

lifetime pass for himself and family, has

said repeatedly he would pay to have this road made free. If a few others

would exhibit the same liberal spirit the

toll gates could soon be removed. Let the city and the country agree to share

the burden and the road will soon he a

free one. The toll alone that is now

'paid if applied to the purchase of the

road. wmld suflice to purchase he road at the low price demanded for it.

Till-: piopoRed articles of .jgrecment betw« ejj the Northern and Southern Pi es-

have now been made public. There are no differences in doctrine* that need ad

two Tie' statu..- of colored ehurchcsaiid

question. There are many who expect

that t..e dilYei'cnees ,JJ th these points will be adjusted. If they are, it must be

done bv the surrender on the part of the

Northern church of their position about the colored people. The Southerners
