The letter in question was mailed at Darlington on Dr*c. 21 and received at iJowvr.-on Dec. 22, the next day. The reason it w:.s not delivered until January 1(1, the P. M. explains as follows: 1 Ic uvs on the roccipt of the letter he made out his book read\ lor the receiver to sign, and pbced the letter and return receipt in the closed book.
