actress ever on the st-a.ue of Music

This isa broad proposition, as we have had Rhea, Mather, Rowers and Modjesj.M, but Miss J,"wis dos not, pale in conparisou with any of them. As Lena Lc.-pard she has glorious oj^portunily for t!io difcplav of hertalent. In the llrst act we (hid her the shamloss. plotting (.•onrtesan. bv invitation, the truest of Sir Thomas mid Lady Gayc. Here she plots with her paramour to break off the love match between Beatrice Vvse and Lord Jialfour, in order that he. miyht marry Miss Vvse and die impose Ijersolf upon Lord Balfour (Lawrence Marston, the dramatist) as his wife and thus win "weath. position—rtHju-viability." The poison is instilled into the ear of Beatrice through the guarded cautious ^tatenients ol L'-naand the medium of forg-

on that were so worn as to letter from Lord Balfour to her. The feet in contact with the snow, plot wotks, and in her success s^he cries.

"Tho stakes are high but I will win the garlic!" The second act shows Lord Balfour in the toils, The.siren has bewitched him. A change has also come over her. Her heart has been touched. She loves with all the power of her soul. The wave i»r reform has come and she endeavors by go.nl acts to wipe out the stains of the past and be worthy of his love. Then follows the proposal and her vain effort to tell him of her past, a story to which he will not listen. "Let the dead past buiy it:, dead. I love you for vouself alone and no phantom from the past tan separate us.". Holding his hand above his head no swears that he will cleave to her through good and evil repute. -The game Is won." In the uext act,, as husband and wife, appears Lena and Lord Balfour. Love has made them one, and brief happiness teigns. Her old pnmmoui appears and threatens "Give me motley or I will inform Loid Balfour that for years who was my--" lie gets no farther. She springs upon him and hisses "If vou do that, 1 will kill you." Tin- husband appears and the vidian tells him all. Then follows the scene between Lena ami her husband who has forgotten his vows, lie upbraid* hei he curses her, while over her lace Hits the changing passions of love, defiance, anger, sorrow, shame, repentance, and despair. She plead*, sin? argues, she cries, she groveis at his leet, she prays and entreats at last confesses. He grasps her by the throat and hurls her witli all his strength born of passion to the iloor. He has killed her. She staggeis to her kneci-and diains a bottle of poison. ](o is aroused he forgives but too late the drug has done its work. "Fin giving you proof of my love." she cries rising to her feet. He eve catches the rejection in a minor, and on its silvery su.face is rellected the past. Through it all Miss Lewis is the true artist, whether as the scheming courtesan, the loving and reformed wife, the defiant woman, the excited gambler, she is perfect. One minute your disgust and loathing is inspired in tin' next your pitv and at the end you will lind a tear for her. The company is one of exceptional excellence. There is not a "stick" in it.
