THE AWFUL VORTEX
Into Which the Unheeding are RapIdly Drifting. Oil the western coast ot Norway lies the little rooky island ot Moekencs. It Is inhabited by a tew hardy fishermen who engage in the cod and herring fisheries along the coast.
It happened one dav In the spring of 1880 that an old man and his grandson, a iad of ten or a dozen years, put out irom the island in a small boat, taking with them their tuhlng tackle and a lunch ot dried fish and oaten cakes.
They row out some distance and secure a boat load ot fish long before the returning tied will allow them to land, so they eat the frugal lunch and lav back on their oars to rest and wait. The old man, weary with pulling the heavy nets, is soon fast asleep, leaving the lad to loak to the safety ot the boat. For a time the sea is smooth, then a light wind blows Irom the west and the boat begins plowly but surely to drift. Little bubbles and patches of foam appear on the suriace ot the dark water. The breeze stiffens, and the boat, with steadily increasing speed, begins to move in an ever-narrowing circle. A sudden lurch alarms the boy, and at the same lime awakens the grandtather, who seizes the oars and pu'ds with the strength ot desperation against the now madly rushing waters tner. the oars are wrenched from his hands, the doomed fishing boat is for a moment dashed about witn terrible velocity and then disappears forever in the awtul vortex of the great maelstrom.
It is the same with the blood. As it courses around through the veins, it reachcs ev ry part of the system in its healthy rush, seeking an opportunity to discharge the waste and poisonous matter from every part ot the system, into the natural sewers. This sewage matter is carried by the blood to the kidneys, there to be thrown off, the same as in life the scavenger would throw his sewage into the stream to rid himselt of the vile substance.
Ann the blood has no other place but the kidnev* in which to throw off its waste matter. Sometimes it finds the kidnevs unprepared to do this work. But the heart takes up the blood and again force* it through the system, where once more waste matter is gathered up the same as the sewers ot our cities gather up such poisonous matter to be discharged at one grand point, and then be earned off ancv ttie danger of such poisoned blood courting lor years through the body I 1 hi» process continues, the blood passing through tne kidneys and heart, removing the impurities Irom 05 gallons ot blood per nour, or barrels each dav! ei the unthinking practitioner regards the kidneys as of little importance, until they are stricken down when he finds htmtc'f so far advanced in the vortex that theie is but little chance tor him. In such emergencies manv have resorted to that great remedy. Warner's safe cure, to a*Mst in nutting these organs in a healthy condition, Ihey have not rested on their oars trusting thier lite idly in the hands of another when thev can catch up the oars oefore it is too late, and a few strokes would put them safelv beyond hopeless danger. A lew bottles of Warner's sale cure at the proper time will restore the kidnevs to health, thereby enabling them to rid the system of the poisonous uric acid, which is liabie in its corruption to attack the weakest part of the y*tem and thereby break it down just as the little stream at the mill-dam wears away- the dam, increasing the danger each hour% until at length becomes overtaxed and gives away, earning destiuction to those who a short time betore looked upon it as of so little importance, but now contemplate the result ot their neglect with horror.

The other day a couple of gcutlemcu called at the Argus News office and requested a retraction of the statement made in this paper in regard to James K. Greene. We did not see proper to accedo to the request. Yesterday a letter purporting to have been written by Jim Greone was printed by T. H. 13. McCain of the Journal. The letter was dated oil December 7th. Now the fact of the matter is that letter is a bare faced fraud. The article printed in the Argus News was published on December 3rd and was not sent away before the 4th in all probability. Whether it was or not makes no differeuce for whether seut on on the :ird or 4th it could not have reached California before the 10th aj the lowest calculation. How then could Jim Greene have answered it from lower California on the 7th! It was impossible. Greene had scarcely reached California himself and as the article was published a day or so after his departure it could not have been there itself- Now this is a nice piece of business, isu't it I Dcaeou, arn't you reallv ashamed for your part of it! Vou old blunderbuss, you ought to have six weeks in the stone yard on a diet of diluted sewer water and stale oread for your stupidity. Don't pretend now that the date published was a compositor's fault. That's too thin. A nice, pretty business to be engaged in, isn't it! Forging letters!—Argus News.
Coming from the source which the above does, it hardly merits a moment's consideration. Hail it originated from almost anywhere else it would receive more serious attention. Hut there may be some people win* an' unsophisticated enough jlo give credence to such false and malicious charges and for the benefit ot all such it becomes necessarv to make the following statement: The letter from Robert J. Greene published in the JontNAL DISPATCH of last Wednesday, was dated "San Diego. Cal., Dec. 17," mid was received at this office on Monday, Dec. and held until the 2Hth before its puhlicntKh. 1 he date appearing on the letter, "Dec. 7." was the fault of the proof reader, in this office. The silly statement of the Argus News, is on a par with its past record.which brings a sneer from all honorable people, whenever mentioned. We will not indulge in epithets as it has done, but place before the public the sworn statements of some of our most reliable and hoiioredcitizens, to whom the letter was shown before it was printed. This will be sufficient to place the brand upon the Aigus News, and burn it in deeply that all may read it.
