—Charlie A. McCiure and Miss Barbara Bever opened school at this place on last Monday. The number of pupils enrolled was sixty. lion. W. S. I.iugle, editor of the La Fayette ('ourirr, made this noble remark not long ago in an address at Meharry's grove "We should never enter the stand or rostrum unless we acknowledge our deep gratitude to those brave soldiers, the defenders and saviors of our country. This I have never failed to do." Those who have heard Mr. Liimle speak can.te.--tify that he truly docs not fail to do so.

Hon. T. ,1. (Jason spoke at this place fin last Saturday evening. He had" a good many listeners, and kept their closest attention till the end. He did not Fpeak to any great length, but his remarks were just to the point. He showed, by his position, that he is obeying the will of the people. The report that he does nothing in Congress is all false. Mr. (Jason will receive a larjje support here. —The ladies of Crawfordsville organized a branch ofiice of the Women's Temperance I'nion at this place last

Wednseday evening. The church wa? well filled and a good organization was effected. Wm. Krug was chosen tempor ary President Bertie Hartness, Vice President and Barbara Bever, .Secretary

One of the meanest tricks we have ever known was served on James A. McCl..re, who lives a few miles north of this place, by one Campbell, of Bethel, Fountain county. On the day of the Grange picnic at Meharry's grove on the 17t.li ul't., Campbell drove a span of mules from that place, about ten miles distant, making them very warm, and on feeding them green corn gave one of tliem the •colic. He asked permission of McCiure to turn into his pasture, which McCiure' who never fails to grant such a favor, granted, also helping him to doctor it till it appeared better, lie left to remain over niihl with a friend, and during his absence the iriulo died. He came with another horse the next day and stole his carriage-away, leaving

to drag the animal away and

bury it. —A youth of this neighborhood, late of Kansas, who has seen about fourteen Summers and a Winter or two, boasts ol a foot that he has frequently put in three counties at once. GUY OAMOHI:.

I deem your question a very proper and pertinent one, and my answer is this: That. I am in favor of the principle of local option, believing that intemperance is an evil of gigantic proportion* and that society has a right to protect itself against its withering, blighting, desolating influence. For this purpose I regard the Baxter law as the best which has yet been devised, and shall support it without any mental reservation

SometliiiiK For 1'vt'rybody Head. It is with pleasure we announce to our readers that on Wednesday, Oct. 7, the great Forepaugh show, an exhibition in magnitude and merit surpassing any and all tented shows ever organized in this country—no one excepted—is to exhibit at Crawfordsville, afternoon and evening. From extended notices of this great combination published in the papers east of here, we could print columns in commendation of this mammoth concern. It ts the only great overland tented exhibition now traveling it docs not travel by rail, but moves ove:- tincountry with 1,000 MI:N ANH IIOKSKS and fills up the road for miles, with its ironed dens, cages, chariots and ini niense baggage trains, and the people of ihiscounty will have an opportunity ot judging of the immensity of this stupendous concern, for themselves, as it jiasses over the loads. In lieu of further description of this famous show, we transfer to our columns the following brief extracts, from extended notices, which hare appeared the present season, in the papers of the leading cilties east of here. .Mark the influence, the conscientious tone, and exalted character of the pa pens from which we quote. [From the Chicago Inter-o^ean.] "The nighest compliment we can pa\ to Forepaugh's great show, is to say thai its advertisements are too modest—they do not half describe its magnitude ami merit—when we consider the exaggerative style oi advertising adopted by traveling exhibitions, what higher compliment can be bestowed upon manage)
