wcake'n before his partner gets fairly at work, you may call on me for the lager, Among the regular institutions of the city are Junenian's and Letilers beer gardens, and Brightwood, to say nothing of the many other places reached by rail and steamer. The two first mentioned places are very popular and well patronized by Americans as well as by tiermans. Cool Summer houses, long arbors with tables and chairs are attractions lor those who wish to enjoy the cool shade and escape from the heat ami dust of the city. Cosmopolitan in its character, one feels free to drink as much as he pleases, talk to whom he pleases, dance

months accustomed to hear a familiar pair of handsome eyes are looking at you voice. These new coiners compensate 'lor the hypocrisy they have been obliged to practice at home by revelling in all manner of questionable amusements., Thev are probably making more ney, and easier, than ever before, and in eon-i-equence spend it with a lavish hand.

The Hnibrdlfs are ntver at lnss to distinguish them from one who '"know how it is themselves."

Just now the most popular place ot resort is the Sehutzenfest at the grounds of their society situated in the northern suburbs of the city. The grounds are handsomely laid oil'and every arrangement made for the accommodation and amusement of the thousands of visitors who throng the woods, fill tho benches and crowd the grand pavilion. The amusements consist in part of performances by professional singers, dancers, and gymnasts, both male and female. IJesidea this there are bowling alleys for both ladies and gentlemen shooting naileries, at which some ladies show an aptness at handling a rifle which astonish some men who are considered good shots different kinds of games of chance music and singim by the German sjcieties. It would take too much of your paper to describe to you the grounds, but with the dozens of little .Summer houses of a'l shapes and sizes, the hundreds of illuminated Chinese lanterns swung from house to house, from tree to tree, intermingled with flags and streamers, the hotel, and grand pavilion fordancimrmake a scene one would not soon forget. Happy (Senium families, the lather mother and children, sit at one table, and drink their mug.-' of beer intent on innocent enjoyment and the amusements endeared to their hearts by the remembrance of the customs ami pleasures of their Uliitu-l.tiul, while the older girls and boys pass .away the happy hours dancing. And right here let me say that if one not accustomed to their style of dancing gets on the ll-mr with one of those happy, healthy, trim-looking girls and starts out to keep up with one of those regular

At night the Hummer gardens in the more central part of the city are thronged,

Where the moral atmosphere is so free that the most straight-laced may take great gasps of it and feel all the better for it. The city is not so bad, however, as many wish to believe.

jirroucttc wirh more abandon, more fervor, and more passion, and they gather up their skirts higher and higher, until at last laughing, Hushed, and almost breathless they advance in apparently indescribable confusion yet in perfect time to the front of the stage kicking at the stars until their garters—they invariably wear red garters with rosettes and tassels—and drawers are so clearly exposed that but little is left to the imagation, and with one farewell kick down and dresses, and a dozen

Tho curtain is rung down, and it is an unexceptionable piece of humanity that goes away with no desire to come again. These places ot Summer amusement are but now fairly beginning. They continue through the warm season when the weaiheris pleasant and inviting.

As for the (.'rawfonkville boys Washington, I might tell of many approaches to that line when one's idea of what is just the right thing to do, you know, get a little mixed and deuced uncertain. Take them up one side and down the other, however, thev are about as lively and as square a set of boys as one usually meets. None of them go back on their lager or on their friends. l.
