*«II. Society at the Nation's capital, for a while kept back by the restraints of the Lenten season and the gloomy weather, is again busy concocting all kinds of plans (or amusements ami all manner of costumes for wearing. On a pretty day, Seventh street and the avenue are densely crowded with visitors and metropolitan belles gazing at the marvelously wrought patterns and specimens of lairy workmanship. I have nol yet had much time to take more than a few peeps at tie costumes. When the fine weather I really conies then men will llee in dismay to their otlices, and the avenue will I he given up to the march of the ladies.! It is quite certain, however, that 1 reuses will be as elaborately trimmed as ever, and black costumes, laces, veils, scarfs and bonnets will be looped across, embroidered, dotted over and profusely covered with buttons and buckles of jet. I append to this a little quotation from the
Autocrat, a small journal that teaches the ladies of Washington '"what to wear, and how to wear it:"
In colors, the urays and the browns will be en regie. There are over .r0 shades
of gray. J'oumer, in this all colors of||
ilust are.concentrated nhshithu, a j:reei.ish gray, yet gray nmiynul, nightingale, a lovely, soil, Quakerish gray, the faintest pink dissolving into gray the pretty grav'of the miironnette sarde, an nihiling"granite gray the bright silver gray the blue gray of slate color ink gray of silvery drabs—these will be the leading colors. There are, too, indications! that browns will be popular, particularly .a reddish tint but this is unbecoming except to a perfect blonde. Tnere are some new colors exquisitely lovely. In one is a blending of pale pink auroral tint, a cream shade of the l'rovcnce rare or a half blown peach blossom. There are, too, .111 infinite number of greens for I evening dresses: pistache green is again I presented to us and a clear, bright maize, very becoming to a brunette I myrtle green, and Nile, and sea foam green, the dusky, sad olive, and dark I with the familv of bronzed
cypress. greens. But grays take precedence, and i' boiled "eggs
Some persons liave asserted that the idea of a four-in-hand originated with Mr. Sartoris, and was carried out 111 accordance with his desires. The President himself drives his pretty thorougbred horse to a light open luirirv to give it the air and exercise its health requires and himself the air and sunshine. A very plain, quiet, sensible President.
Charity appeals with
in.iu is our
the kind feelings of this community. iMitertainments of various kinds" are given almost every week, both at public places of amusement and at private residences, the pioeeeds of which are used for the poor. Nol long ago Lydia Thompson's Hurlesijue Opera Troupe gave a charity matinee, at which about ftJOO were netted. One of the pleasant features of the entertainment was that no change was given either for tickets or bo.juets. Miss Thompson herself presided al the ticket oflice, and Miss Meaumont, Miss Atherton and other members of" the troupe acted i:i the capacity of ushers and flower sellers, and many young gentlemen unwittingly and unwillingly paid double and treble prices to these fair robbers, who persistently and laughingly replied: "We make no change, sir.''
Among tlicsubstantial Spring pleasures of the present time we have, and have had for two or three weeks, delicate lcttuce, strawberries at six dollars a quart, peas, tomatoes at ten cents each, and other luxuries at equally exorbitant prices.
Passing from the social tiie political world, I may remark thai Congress is still in session, wrestling with the complcx afl'airsof the Nation. In the House this week they are trying to deterniinine the appropriations necessary to carry on lliis government. In the Senate they are endeavoring to discover a legal and lawful government for Louisiana. .Persons who
ought to know say that the present fee.-,-
iver cut out so min'li and finished so little work in the same length of time as this one. see that some fault is found at lionie with our liepresentative, Mr. I Cason, bcoause, as they say, lie does notli-! ing. Surely if those fault finders were Jiere thev wouM have no nvounds fori
complaint. Mr. Cason, not being chair- S man of any committee and being anew member, has imi had any duty imposed upon hi in that would bring him out in any particularly prominent manner. As a member of the Committee on Revision of the Laws he has been called upon to work many hours out of the hall, and there is no member of that coinniitt.ee who has labored more faithfully or whose advice is more weighty than his. lie has uniformly been in his seat, and has never dodged the question when an important vote was taken. Much more might be said in his praise, for he needs no defense but I am not writing a political letter, only little scraps of talk.
All the boys from Orawfordsville are well, and pleased to note the prosperous condition of the Joi'itNAl.. M.

The Venality of Voters. .rSeveral "free and independent" gentlemen of Louisville are on trial, charged with openly selling their votes. The New London, Connecticut, Tclct/ram I charges that in that.city "more than 100 votes were bought and sold directly, and that at least ail equal number were indirectlv influenced by pecuniary eonsiderations." The worst feature of the case I is that "among those who openly and unblusliingly sold themselves for a few

are connected with respectable familief. and have been educated in our common schools and in our high school."
