A writer in Scribner's Magazine says the excellence of coifee depends upon the way it is treated after it is made. The rule is simple, never decant it Whatever else you do about it, bring it to the tMile in ihe vessel in which it was made. A handsome urn or a geoigeous cofTee pot is the grave of good coffee. Of course, if it is considered more desirable to have the pot look well than to have the code taste well, we have nothing more to say. But when hot coffee is: emptied from one vessel into another, the kitchen ceiling generally receives the essence-laden vapor which should have found its way into tho cups ou the breakfast table. And one word about

Senate is just now flooded with
petitions from late su'dier.sin the late wa» and their representative, asking for ttie pa-ssane of the House bill giving laud certificates to honorably discharged (oldicra and their representatives. Senators Harlan and Air. Pratt, in presenting these petitions, improved the occasion to show »ome oi me resim- uj iiir enacunent oi such a Inw. Mr. Harlan said thm iUc certificates would probably become fo plenty that they would not be worth more than $10 or? 16 each, and Mr. Pratt read a letter from the Secretary of War, showing the number of soldiers who served in the war to been 2,CT0,57S. Supposing the number who died without leaving l?({al representatives, or who will not apply for the land warrants, to be 670,578, there would still lie 2,000,000 left. To give ltio acres to each of these would require 320,000.000 of acres. There is no doubt that this bill is being pushed by speculators who expect through it to gei powK-ssion of immense tracts of the public lands, anil to hold them for an ailvance in priae. This is, in short, the biggest land grab scheme ever proposed to Congress.—Cincinmilia Gazette.
