E E IIA IT. gave Gen John A. Logan a grand reception last Saturday night. The torchlight procession on that occasion numbered 1'HX), being nearly three times as great its the one got up by Voorhees' friends on the previous Tuesday.
A REMARKAIH.K meteor pas-ed aero-s the northern sky last Thtir.-day night, starting from near the western horizon and disappearing behind the trees in the eait. It was followed by a steady and brilliant tail of light, and its passage across, the sky must have occupied a full minute and a half.
•. E result of the vote in North Carolina is now fully known, and indicates certainly that that State will cast it? vote for Gen. Grant in November. The vote for Congressmen, when analyzed, shows that the Republicans had a majority of 3,2G0in the State, -.rhile Caldwell's majority for Ciovernor, from some cause, was only 1,915. All of Caldwell associciates on the Stalo ticket ran ahead of
him.
Tim election in Vermont on Tueday of last week resulted even more favorable to the Republicans than there was any reason to expect from the first ditpalches. The Republican majority for Ciovernor is little short of 20,000. This is again of about f,000 on the majority of 1870. The State Senate is unanimously Republican, and the House stands 20G Republicans to 21 Democrats. In 1870 the Democrats had two Senators and 29 Representatives.
HE speakers of the "any thing to beat Grant" party are constantly re-iter-ating the charge of military rule in thefor South. A careful calculation, from figures furnished by the War Department, Knows shows that there is an average of jnsr one soldier to every 238 square miles of territory throughout the entire South. Yet these soldiers, they would have us believe, arc tramping around over the country, each in his 238 square miles of territory, "subjugating" the people, and "filling the offices against the will of the people!"
THE Indianapolis Sentinel speaks thus philosophically of Greeley's chances in theEast: "The only States that the Liberals can hope for in New England are New Hampshire and Connecticut, and we Lave every confidence that the Liberal candidates will carry both. Hut from Maine we can not look for any material change. The people are of a character not easily moved." The Sentinel will find the people of a good many other States besides Maine "of a character not easily moved" to the support of Greeley.
