IKF. SMITH and James Upton Keane. Americans of African descent, were heard disputing on the street the other day, when one of them said: "What's de u?e fo' us to be 'sputin 'bout dis thing always? let's 'fer it to de Congress districks."

THE MishawaVa Enterprise office is offered for sale. It is complete in all its appointments, and is doing a good business. We regret to learn of the ill health of friend MONTGOMERY which compels him to relinquish the conductorship of one of the best little papers on our exchange list.

THE Indianapolis Journal of last Monday has an able editorial iu favor of a high tariff on pig iron. We congratulate the Journal on its thorough conversion to the doctrine of encouragement to American manufacturers. May it continue to display the same ability iu handling Unimportant question.

SEVENTEEN States have chosen delegates to the Philadelphia Convention. Of the 330 delegates chosen, but thirteen are Federal office holders. Every one of the seventeen have been instructed for the re-nomination of Gen. GRAST. The Cincinnati Convention was called as a mass meeting," but the masses that attended were a mass ot otlice seekers anil soreheads.

and the grossest and most insidious misrepresentations of them by such exaggerated and indecent means as could be scarcely applied to a negro, a notorioua defaulter, or even to a common pickpocket." The slauders that were uttered against Gen. Washington have their counterpart in the defamation of Gen. Grant to-day. It seems to be the prin* cipal effort of the traducers of Gen. Grant, not to learn the truth and present it fairly, but to pervert facta and sarblo statements and blacken his character just so much as it is supposed will serve the interests of his enemies.

THECourt House clique are managing to lay Hon. JOHN W. COPNER on the shelf, on account of the temperance bill introduced in the House by him last session of the Legislature, giving married women the right to sue liquor selleis for improper sale of liquor to their husbands, whereby they and their children are made to suffer the pangs of disgrace and destitution. Mr. COPNER has the thanks of the better portion of all parties for his efforts in behalf of a large and unfortunate class of suffering humanitv, and if he is defeated for his efforts in tbeir behalf, we predict it will injure the party much more than it will Mr. COPNER.

THE Indiana Anirrican, edited Parson Goodwin, speaking of the "reform" twaddle of the Cincinnati Convention, makes this point illustrative of the result "We never had a man to appeal to us as a Methodist or as a Mason or as an Odd Fellow or Good Templar who did not, in the end, swindle us. Judas hailed his master with a kiss, but ha used the kiss to betray him. Joab kissed Amasa, but he stabbed him while kissing him. The Democrats, in lS'Jl', wanted to "reform" the administration, and push the war more vigorously, but they elected .Seymour in New York to resist the draft, and to burn the negroes and turn the city over to the mob, and by their "reform" in Indiana they fostered the Knights of the Golden Circle, and came near giving the arms of the State into their hands." THJff OINCIHNATI NOMINEE. The nomination of Mr. GREELEY by the Cincinnati Mass Meeting was rather a surprise to everybody, and a dca lly blow to the handful of Missouri schemers who got up the convention in the interests of the British manufacturers and American speculators.
