Crawfordsville Weekly Journal, Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, 9 December 1869 — Page 2
THE COMING WOMAN.
Mrs. C. S. McDONALD, Editor.
ATTEND the tempcrancc meeting at the Baptist Church to-morrow night.
TIIE income of Mrs. Colt, the widow of the celebrated pistol manufacturer, is 8-100,000 per annum.
A LAKGE infirmary is to be erected at Indianapolis, by the Sisters of Providence, who have paid $26,500 for the land, and the building will cost §50,000.
TIIE oflicers and members of the Montgomery County Woman Sufrage Association will meet at Dr. Mary H. Wilhite's residence, on Washington street, next Monday evening.
TIIE Chicago Agitator is to be removed to Boston. Mrs. Livermore will be editor-in-chief, and the editorial corps will be composed of Julia Ward Howe, Henry Ward Beecher, Lucy Stone Blackwell, Wm. Loyd Garrison, Col. T. W. Higginson, and several other distinguished writers.
HELEN DAUGHERTY, of Western New York, has, after a long contest, secured in the Supreme Court, the inventor's title to a machine which cuts splints from a board in bevel form, producing a cut hoop ready to apply at once to a barrel. It will yield her a handsome income.
CORNELL UNIVERSITY has decided to admit one hundred girls, and is devising means for their employment, that they may, like the male pupils, by their own labor, pay the whole or part of their expenses for board and education. A few, it is thought, can at once be received and placed at domestic work of different kinds.
''WIFE-BEATIXG has become so common in England that the journals of that country are discussing what should be an effective remedy, and some are advocating the public flogging of the offenders. It is objected to this form of punishment that wifebeating prevails among the well-to-do classes, and especially among the beneficed clergymen who should not be subjected to the corporal penalties inflicted upon costermongers and bricklayers. For the respectable classes, six hours in the pillory is proposed.
ANOTHER ACCESSION TO THE CAUSE.
The Toledo Blade has the following sensible editorial on woman suffrage. "Reforms never go backward, and one stage of progress ended in the struggle for human rights a new one begins. Ere the triumph of manhood suffrage, unrestricted by the accidents of birth, wealth, or social condition, is proclaimed, the agitation of woman suffrage becomes the o-reat excitement of the time. At the National Convention held in Cleveland this week the orators alluded to the gratifying progress which their cause has made during the past fifteen years, A little over a year ago no lady teacher in the Cleveland schools received over8500 salary now eight ladies receive $1,000 per year. This is the fruit of agitating the right of woman to a just and equal remunera tion for her work. Women appear in the Convention with the titular appendages of "Rev." and "M. D." Lady Ministers open the sessions with prayer, and lady lawyers expound the laws governing both parliaments and States. Ih nil these novelties nothing occurs to shock the tastes of any intelligent person. The world moves on: just as it did, only we think all the better for the innovations which indicate the onward and upward progress of the human race.
The woman suffrage movement will soon be a recognized fact in our politics. It has passed through the initial stage when men laugh and sneer at it on account of its novelty and insignificance. It must now
important issue. We do not dread the coining of the day when the wives and daughters of the free men of this land shall deposit their ballots in favor of the measures and movements they deem important tor their country's welfare.'\'We see no evil results likely to arise from their so doing. Women take part in many religious, benevolent, .-.and other societies equall}- with men,. and they lose nothing in character or moral worth by so doing. Young men and women are educated in the same schools and colleges, and institutions allowing them to recite in the same classes are the best governed and most prosperous of any in the land. Ihe barbarous, superstitious and corrupt age of convents and cloisters has happily gone by. Experiments enough have been made to show that good and not evil comes from allowing woman freedom to do all the good her mind wills, or her hands can do. A good woman will vote only for the persons that she would be willing to hold up as examples to her sons and daughters. She will vote only for measures that will tend to the welfare of the idols of her heart and home. There are bad-principled and ignorant women, it is true, but we think on the whole, every really good cause would gain substantial aid from their accession to political power.
A PROPHECY.
[The following beautiful poem was read by the author, Rev. Phceba A. Hannaford, at the National Woman Suffrage Convention, held at Cleveland, Ohio, on the 24th and 25th of last month.]
With reverend hand we lift Truth's glorious banner, And fealty vow, To all that liffei onr sex to power and honor.
In this grand Now.
The time has fled when weakness meant but woman. The time has come When divine transcends in her the human,
And'tis her doom, ,, .•
Her glorious destiny to guide this Nation Par from its sin, Up to the hights of its serene salvation,
Its crown to win.
Among the peoples that are known to story And classic song, There shall no Nation be so filled with glory,
And none so strong
As this Republic, noble and far-stretching From sen to sea, While its grand intluence, o'er the waters reaching,
Bids all be free.
Strike, then, the sounding cymbals in this hour. Peal forth a blast. Waking dead nations to thet&ought of power. ....
For good to last.
When woman, in the state beside her brother, May nobly toil, This land shall take a placc o'er every other.
And on its soil
The grandest temple ever reared to Freedom In peace shall rise, Its tower of strength, the truth that all are equal,
Beneath the skies.
And as no bond or free are known among us, Since Lincoln wrote, So neither male nor female shall be counted,
When freemen vote.
be
dclt with as a living, practical and
God speed the hour when they who've battled bravely, Shall grasdly win, And woman, when the voters here are numbered,
Be counted in.
Then shall be oped the glorious gates of morning Por all onr race, And Truth's fair jewel every brow adorning,
All shall have place.
To "work for God is working for the race. And side by side, With equal privilege and equal honor,
In peace abide.
We will not faint, then, on this field of honor, But still contend, With all the power God gives to each reformer,
Unto the end.
t'
And then we'll join the loud and glad hosanna, The earth shall sing, When Right and Might enlist beneath one banner.
And Truth is. King,
