Republican Prospect* in Indiana. ...With .the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment and the removal of various political obstructions brought about by the recent elections and the march of events, the success of the new administration and the general prosperity and progress of the country, the prospects of the Republican party in Indiana were never better. The small majority received by General Grant, in this State, which was about ten thousand, was brought about by various causes which have now passed away and "would tit least be doubled were an election come off next month. The advantage to the Democracy growing out of: the prejudice against color, which was the last peg upon which they had hung their hopes for several years, has been swept away by the settlement of the suffrage question, and the adoption of the fifteenth amendment will give to the Republican party from six to eight thousand votes in the State, and carry all the Congressional Districts, unless it be the Second. If the Republican party shall nominate an unexceptional State ticket and candidates for Congress, they can carry the full party strength. With able and honest candidates -for the Legislature, it can walk over the track next year with a round majority, ranging from twelve to twenty thousand" The Congressional ticket ahva}*s has much to do with the success of an October election, and should be made up of the best"and strongest men, and no manj should aspire to a place on it who
can not carry his full party strength, .. and thus become a load instead ol' an
assistant. The discipline of the Deinerratic party on this subject has aiways been very strict, and whenever one of their Congressional candidates falls considerably behind his party vote, they invariably relieve him! from duty and put some one else in! his place. ri*ent earo should be taken in the selection of a legislative ticket. 1 Let the ablest and best men be chosen. The legislation of the State de-1 tnands for its consideration the beat informed minds, and men whose! pride of character and integrity principle will protect them alike f.iom the control of prejudice, or the blandishments of corruption. Wherever: there arc abuses to be reformed or. errors to be corrected, the Rcpubli-i can party should take the advance in the good work, and lay the ax to the! root of the tree, no difference who may be thereby ali'ected.
Nor should there be less attention I paid to the selection of candidates for county offices. These ollices are valuable, and are contended for with great earnestness, and that party has a great advantage whose candidates irr (W W are distinguished for capacity, integrityand general fitness. The spirit: of the Republican party is excellent, and it "Will enter the next canvass with a determination to win, and by observing the suggestions we have made can achieve success by a large majority. The time for the regeneration of the Democratic party has not come. It is, and will for some years yet be under the control of the old anti-war hacks and rebel sympathysers, under whose leadership it has been sjteadily defeated for a number of years, These men have talked about the negros all their lives, and now that the negro question is settled, will wander about the stage like actors who are trying to play new parts which they have never learned. —Indianapolis Journal.
Thk Farmers' Home Journal says: Wctiave at different times published paragraphs detailing the beneficial results produced by "the use of salt oh grass land and on land devoted to other crops. Whether the value of this agent is attributable to its manuring quality or its power as an absorbent, by which it is enabled to attract or retain moisture in the land on which it is sown, we do not now ..undertake to decide., ^Our object in this paragraph is more particularly to speak of an experiment made in another direction. Mr. L. P. Spnrrf bf^his county, has for some time sown salt on grass land before plowing it up for corn, and, as a reBult, he.bas found that no grub worm or ctlier insects have troubled it. The quantity sown was about one and a half bushels to the acre. It is claimed by others that thasame advantages axe gained by soaking the seed «-,orn in salt water."
One hundred and forty-four bushels of oats to an acre is the latest Wisconsin achievement.
