A'OK.N in the field is selling in some parts of the county for $20 per acre. It is not such a bad failure after all.
ZKB RICHARDSON, of the well-known Kichardson House, has surrounded his promises witii a good plank side-walk.
THK Temperance meeting at the Court House on last Sunday afternoon was not well attended, but it ought to have been.?
AMONG the Covington celebrities in attendance at the Court and Fair, we uoticc Geo. McWilliams, formerly of this city.
IT is said Col. Shaw, of Indianapolis, has been appointed mail agent on the new road and is coming to this city to Jive.
Mns.. MAKTIN, of this city, was among •Jie wounded at the boiler explosion at the State Fair, having her arm considerably bruised. _,
THE wheat market was dull at the close of last week, but opened a little better this week. Prices have ranged from ninety cents to one dollar.

©NCR more it becomes our -painful duty to record that a few piore good books, principally Patent Office Reports? still remain in the library of the Know-Each-Other Society. The library is free and the Society sits with open doors.
FIRK.—Last Monday morning, shortly before nine o'clock, a fire was found burning in the stove of one of our business men. In less than an hour fires were found burning in a dozen different stoves, while a score of blue-nosed men stood shivering on the corners, wishing they had wood or coal. Much credit is due the Fire Department.
ONE of the braves of our city barely escaped destruction at the time of the explosion at Indianapolis last week. He was walking away from the engine when he heard the report. Turning around he saw a piece of iron coming toward him, when he immediately placed himself behind a post some fifty yards distant. Presently the iron struck the post and knocked him down stunning him considerably. He considers it a marvelous escape, aud will be at our fair this week.
SOME wretch or some poor unfortunate, we know not which, left a horse hitched to the rack back of tlio Court House from Monday noon until Tuesday. A faithful dog, lean and thin, stood by the horse during the whole time. On Tuesday some person gave the horse a bunch of straw, which is probably all that he had in the shape of food or water during the time. It is an act of cruelty to leave a horse in such a condition that requires a great number of mitigating circumstances to make it excusable.
SHEEP KILLING.—Mr. W,. K. White reports a great loss of sliecp for himself and neighbors from the depredations of dogs during the last two weeks. As many as twenty-five were killed and wounded for himself on the night of the 2Gth of September, beside several for his neighbors. Several more were killed last Sunday night. Mr. White's sheep were, most of them, fat, weighing as much as one hundred ajid forty pounds. He reports corn much better than at this season last year, though much of it was injured by the hail in August.
BUILDING.—Although less than two months of the building season remains, it is probable that we shall witness great improvements yet before cold weather. A building is in progress on the corner near the depot, one at the end of -the Graham store, beside a dozen dwelling houses in various stages of progress. Mechanics are vigorouly pushing forward the out-door work, conscious that their season of dull times is fast approaching.
OCTOBER came in smiling, but promises a bustling time. September's plumy sheaves and lingering flowers, connecting links between Summer and Autumn, are fast disappearing. But notwithstanding the melancholy feelings excited by the fading and passing away of Summer's beauties, October brings with it some of the finest and most exhilarating weather of the year. So let them fade.
COMMON PLEAS COURT.—The Montgomery Common Pleas Court met on Monday last, but has transacted no business of any consequence yet. 'Most of the time Judge Ristinehas been holding an adjourned term of the Circuit Court by appointment of Judge Cowan, to try what is known as '-the Xutt Case." The ease of Clorc vs. Glenn is set for next Monday and will be tried by Judge Gregory, of the Supreme Court.
MESSRS. GUTHRIE & BRO.S well at the slaughter house is seventy-two feet deep. They propose to use one of Gurley & Co.'s patent pumps, manufactured at Annapolis, for which Mr. W. R. White, of Brown township is agent. Quite a number of these pumps are used in this county, among them the one on Commercial Row.
MONTGOMERY county was fortunate enough to escape with little injury from the explosion at Indianapolis last week, as well as to carry off some of the ribbons. Mr. J. 1). Smith received the first premium on his thoroughbred stallion, sorrel, and Messcrs. Simpson & AVallace a recommendation for premium on their Cashmere goats.
WE hope the report that the new road is soon to become a mail route is true. Persons living along the line would find it a great improvement over the slow and uncertain mails by the State road. Our subscribers could then get the JOURNAL at Mace, New Ross and Jimtown on Thursday instead of Saturdaj'.
THE familiar countenance of John A. Shanklin smiled in our office yesterday. John hails from the Government Printing Ofiice, at Washington, where he is Chief of Executive Printing. General Grant and Mrs. General Grant, the President's wife, are well. The General has got home, but still, smokes.
THE vacant ground back of the Stone front, which has been such a convenience to farmers having in view the results of a violation of the shade tre ordinance, is about to be fenced in for a wood and rubbish yard.
OUR report of the fair closed yesterday at noon. The attendance in the afternoon was much larger than in the morning.
CAPT. TOM PURSELL, of the Bloomington Democrat, favored us with a call yesterday morning.

DIED.
GRAY.—On the 24tli ult., at the residence of her soninlaw, Joseph W. Kelsey, six miles eouth of Crawfordsville, Mrs. Jane Gray, in the 70th year of her age.
Mrs. Gray was born in Pennsylvania, removed in early life with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wray, to Ohio, and settled in Buttler county. Here she was married to her first husband Mr. Joseph Scott. Shortly after their marriage they removed to Indiana, and settled near Comiersville thence, in 1S2G or 1827, to Montgomery county, and settled in Crawfordsville. Here she buried her husband. After remaining a widow several years she was married to Mr. Reuben Nicholson with whom she lived a number of years, when she was again left a widow with a family of helpless little children, to struggle along life's dreary path as best she could. Thirty-three years ago she was married to her third husband, Mr. John Gray, with whom she lived some six or seven years, when the hand of affliction again pressed heavily upon her, and she was left the the third time a widow, with seven children, all daughters, to care for. But still this noble mother struggled on, trusting in the widow's husband, and the orphans never-failing Father who had been her 'strength and hiding place' in all times of affliction and sorrow. In early youth Mrs. Gray joined the M. E. Church, and was one of the noble little band that constituted the first Class organized in Crawfordsville. She lived to see all her children married and acceptable members of the Church of her own early choice. She rests from her labors, and her works will follow her.
