"WM. MTLLEK, of this city, was the iirst settler of Crawfordsville. His daughter, Mrs. Mary A. Scott, wife of T. H. Scott, was the first girl baby. The late Hon. James Wilson was the first boy baby.
THERE are in this county 3,300 farms. The wheat crop for 1869 on those farms, it is estimated, will reach 800,000 bushels, or a surplus of 500,000 bushels. Can any county in the State of equal size beat it
talked of boat race crews being present except the Lady Franklin, whose crew was suffering from overtraining. A large crowd was assembled on both sides of the river, and in spite of the rain, which fell in torrents, preserved their good humor. The preliminaries were settled, Capt. Ross being chosen starter and Mr. Hciiy Lorenz, referee. At half past 3 the word was given, and away went all four boats, the Sorosis leading, followed by the other three abreast. The Sorosis led as Jar as the bridge when she was overtaken by the Win. Stonebreaker, the Lady Annabel and What Is It, following closely. On nearing the stake off Eagle Point it was evident that the crews of the Sorosis and Stonebreaker were distressed, and the Annabel taking advantage of the tide and certain currents setting in here, passed all the others and led back as far as the bridge, where she was passed by a spurt of the Stonebreaker which led during the remainder of the race, the Annabel second, Sorosis third, and What Is It, fourth. A plea of loul was put in against the Annabel but was not entertained. After the decision of the referee an ovation was given to the victor who was escorted through the city crowned with jimpson weeds and sunflowers to the music of the dog show band. The swimming match between
Gen. Boreaker and Mr. Wm. Martin, was postponed on account of the bad weather. It was a day's sport long to be remembered.
COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS.—The Council met last Monday evening. Present, His Honor Mayor Speed. Councilmen Galey, Epperson, Foote, Smith, Riley and Watson.
Bills were allowed Fisher Doherty for two months rent for engine house, $'24 Henry Crawford two months rent for Mayor's Room, $31,25 McCain & Talbot for printing, $78,35. .A temporary reel for additional hose for engine was ordered.
The ordinance in regard to hitching to or under shade trees was amended, so that no person but the owner, occupant or trustee of the house shall make complaint or affidavit against the person or persons offending.
WE find the following in the Covington Journal of last Thursday. The spirit of improvement is laying her magic wand upon some of the waste places, and already there is a shaking among the dry bones of fogy ism, so much so that it is being noticed abroad. Let the good work go on
We confess our astonishment, during a hurried visit to Crawfordsville on Saturday last, to see so much improvement going on. Buildings are being put up which would do credit to any city in the West. In every part of the town new houses are springing up like magic. Verily the day' of awakening has come to the old town, and all because of the East and West road.
MR. DURHAM, President of the First National Bank of Crawfordsville, made a western trip this Summer, and says that as far as he went he saw the Greencastle pumps. Every well in Iowa seemed to have one of our pumps in it. This shows how manufacturing makes .a town known.— Greencastle Banner.
We believe there are one or two pump factories in this city, but we are not sure as we have seen nothing in the public prints to let the public know the fact. Like the man spoken of in the Scripture they keep their light hid under a half bushel.
A FRIGHTFUL runaway occurred last Monday at Lee's brick yard, east of the city. A team with a two-horse wagon attached jumped a picket fence, or rather one of the horses jumped the fence, and with the fence between them they ran some distance before they were stopped, tearing up several posts in their way. Strange to say no damage was done the wagon.
As will be seen by the appointments of preachers which we print elsewhere. Rev. A. A. Gee has been appointed to the pastorate charge of the church in this city, in the place of Rev. T. S. Webb who goes to Laporte. "Rev. S. Godfrey is the Presiding Elder on this District in the place of Rev. J. C. Reed who goes to Ninth Street, LaFayette.
SEPTEMBER.—This month has retained its Latin name, without the change of a letter. When the year began in March, under the "old dispensation," this month was properly named the seventh of the series as were also October, November and December, the eighth, ninth and tenth but, since the beginning of the year was set back two months earlier, these names arc misnomers.
FROM our exchanges we learn that the Early Rose Potato is the rage over the country. Everybody goes for the Early Rose. Sylvester Hopping publishes a card elsewhere from some of the staunchest farmers, testifying to the good qualities of this potato. Mr. Hopping is one of our great potato raisers and knows what's what.
CI1AWFORDSVILLE JOURNAL: SEPTEMBER 16, 1869.
S INFANTILE MARRIAGE.—The Ladoga Herald is responsible for the following
CRAWKORPSVILLE REGATTA.—At 3 o'clock Tuesdav Afternoon the much took place, all the item of news: A few days ago a young runaway pair, who reside in the vicinity of Crawfordsville, got on the Louisville
New Albany and Chicago Railway at Whitesville and came to Greencastle, where they changed cars for Charleston, Illinois. The young man or rather boy, was sixteen years of age and the girl fourteen, and they were eloping beyond the reach of obdurate parents for the purpose of matrimony. Our informant says they returned home the day following, having secured the 'Balm in Gilead' of the authorities at Charleston. That couple will do to travel, but we are not positively certain that they did not deserve a good spanking when they returned. It is fair to presume the "old woman" was willing to give it to them.
REV. MR. SAFEORD preached a very interesting and instructive sermon last Sunday from Hebrews 11th cli. 14th verse: ''Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise partook of the same that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil."
FREE EXTERTAIXMEXT.—It will be seen by an advertisement which appears in to-day's paper that H.J.Webster & Son propose to give a series of entertainments, at the corner of Green and Main streets. As Artemas Ward would say they .have gone into the 'sho bizness' and propose to show to the barefooted a splendid stock of boots and shoes
As an item for our capitalists we clip the following from an exchange: The Wheat Drill Factory of Milton, Wayne county, is filling a St. Louis order of a thousand drills to one house. Cash $80,000.
How much better it would be for our city if her moneyed men instead of burying their capital would invest it in something similar to the above.
ANOTHER WESTOX.—Crawfordsville has a Weston in tlie tield. Ike Shevlen proposes to walk to Indianapolis,'"aHlStance of forty-live miles, inside of fourteen hours, on a wager of $100. John White is the second party. The money is deposited, and the feat is to be attempted inside of eight days from to-day. Boys are betting two to one on Shevlen.
Ax amateur th er troupe lias been organized in this city. Stanly Simpson, S. Collett Campbell, Theo. MeMechan, Misses Mary and Carrie Krout, Sallie and Lucy Fry and Miss Katie Wallace are the leading spirits.
AN alarm bell weighing over nine hundred pounds was shipped from the Buckeye Bell Foundry, Cincinnati, last Saturday for this city, and will be placed on the engine house some time this week. The bell cost $300, the Fire Company paying $200 of the amount.
THE JEtna Insurance Company made a donation of $20 to the Fire Company as a recognition of its service in saving the house of Mrs. Wallace from destruction, on the night that Mr. Wert's house was consumed.
ACCIDENT.—Miss Mattic Vanliook, while getting out of a carriage one day last week, was thrown to the ground by her skirts catching on the steps. She was badly injured about the shoulders, but not seriously.
GERMAN has been introduced into our Public Schools. Miss Annie Probst, from the Terre Haute Public Schools, who comes highly recommended, is the teacher.
HARRY GYKK, formerly of Lebanon, but now of LaFayette, is the mason putting in Elston's pressed brick front.
DIED.
GREGG—At his residence, 7 miles south of Crawfordsville, Sept. Dth, 1SU9, Alpheus Gregg, aged 08 years.
Another one of the old pioneers has passed away. Mr. Gregg was among the first settlers of this county. lie was born in Butler county. Ohio, in 1801, and moved to this county in 1826. lie built his rude cabin in the wilderness, and being a man of strong arm and inflexible will, cleared away the surrounding forest and soon became ths possessor of a line farm. Having a strong constitution he, survived the hardships of frontier life and retained remarkable good health even to within two weeks of his death. In that early day when books and newspapers are few he was accustomed after his day's labor was ended to seat himself beside the blazing lire and read his Bible, which he made the man of his counsel. In this manner he committed a large portion of the Scriptures to memory and even in his old age could repeat chapter after chapter wTith great fluency. He was a man of liberal views, a kind neighbor, a good citizen, and withal generous. His roof was ever the shelter of the orphan, and the poor never went away from his door empty handed, those who knew him loved and esteemed him.' After a brief but severe illness he quietly and peacefully passed away. The memory of the good is ever blessed.

The length of the Pacific Railroad is such that a courtship recently begun in Ohio was consummated in a marriage before the two travelers reached San Francisco. When they reached Crawfordsville, the gentleman, finding he had time, rushed up to Guthrie & Bro.'s and bought a nice, fresh, tender steak for their first breakfast.
