IN addition to the increase in the acreage in hops in Wisconsin, the hop lice have made their appearance in great numbers, so that the prospect is that there will not be a very large ci op.

THE IIASPBERRY AND BLACKBERRY. —Let it be borne in mind through the season that the canes of this fruit like a loose, cool, moist soil, and the more mulching they have all along, the more healthy and the more productive they will be. There need be no fear that too much weeds, grass, primings, straw or light manure will be applied. If a foot in depth, the octter.

CUT a bushel of tomatoes without skinning them and boil until quite soft. Rub through a hair seive and add half a gallon of cider vinegar, one pint of salt, two ounces of ground cloves, quarter pound alspice, one ceaspoonfnl cayenne pepper, one tablespoonful biack pepper. Mix all together and boil three hours longer. Bottle for use without straining, and if it is well corked it will keep for years.

STRAWBERRY VINEGAR.—Pour one quart good vinegar on two quarts very ripe strawberries, and let them stand three days. Then drain the vinegar through a wire strainer, or a jelly bag, and pour it on to the same quantity of fresh berries. Repeat it the third time, then add a pint of sugar to the strained juice—boil it a few minutes and when cool, bottle and cork. A tablespoonful in a glass of water makes a delicious, cooling drink.

NEW METHOD OF MAKING JELLY.— Press the juice from the fruit add the proper proportion of sugar, and stir the juice and sugar until the sugar is completely melted, put it into jars, and in tweuty-four hours it will become a proper consistency. By this means the trouble of boiling is avoided, and the jelly retains more completely the flavor of the fruit. Care should be taken to stir the mixture until the sugar is completel}7 melted, and fine sugar used.

GENEROUS GROWTH.—The Marietta Register says that a gentleman of undoubted veracity, living in Newport township, Washington county, O., stuck a stake into a hill of corn, a week or two since, in such a manner that the point of the longest blade would

each exactly to the top of the

stake. Just eight days afterward, he measured from the top of the stake to the highest point of the corn, and found that it had grown 3 feet, 6£ Incites, or 5£ inches per day. The balance of the field exhibited the same wonderful growth.

MR. HAMMOND, President of one of the Western horticultural societies, in his last annual address, gives the following excellent advice to beginners in horticulture: "He who would succeed as a horticulturist must be in love with his profession he must adopt it as his busines, and identify it with his life. He must be a close observer, possess an indomitable will, and a large amount of patience and perseverance. He must be a man who has learned to labor aud to •wait—not to labor for a season, to plant an orchard or a vineyard, and then to sit down with folded hands, expecting, without further effort, to gain Pomona's fairest treasures but to labor constantly and earnestly, firmly believing that the reward will come."

A CORRESPONDENT, sends to Hearth and Home the following recipe for removing ink stains: "When the stain is fresh and wet, hasten to provide some cold water, an empty cup, and a spoon. 1'our a little of the water on the stain, not having touched it previously with anything. The water, of course, dilutes the ink and lessens the mark then ladle it up into an empty cup. Continue pouring clean water on the stain and ladling it up, until there is not the slightest mark left. No matter how great the quantity of ink spilt, patience and perseverance will remove every indication of it. To remove a dry inkstain, dip the part stained in hot milk aud gently rub it lepeat it until no sign is'left. This is an unfailing remedy."
