Those persons knowing themselves indebted to the Joukstal oJlicc for advertising or job work are respectfully requested to call and settle. Rents, hands, and paper aud ink bills demand money ol' us. and our reliance is on those we have favored. We must pay cash in advance for all mv materials, and it is but fair to ask punctual payments for work for which VrC have made these expenditures. Don't think this is meant for your neighbor.

About the lirst ol" September many subscription terms will expire. We should be glad to have them renewed immediately. "We find the cash system the true one, giving both subscriber and publisher the least trouble, and we expect to adhere to it. We cannot make distinctions in favor of good men. !Not even the First National Bank gets paper without paying for it in advance. So don't imagine that you arc the best man in the world and that we do wrong not to trust you, but come up and renew, if you want the paper to be continued.

THE PBOSPKCT.

Trade continues dull. The general briskness which was looked for with the beginning of the present month has not come. This is the case no less in the East than in the West. The country has been struggling against the hot weather, the busy harvest season and a somewhat depreciated public credit for nearly two months without accomplishing much. Still, better times are looked for within the present month. The country is really richer than ever before. The crops so far as they have matured, have been bountiful and most these which are to follow promise equally well. The South no less than the great Northwest, shares in this -'•.abundance, and will furnish a good custom for the manufacturers and

own, and even profit by it The only fear for the future arises from the

hnuuciiil condition ol the coimtty,

with :t depredated currency which nil feel must, sooner or Inter be cxclumire.d i'or somcthinir more submore •stantial. I-Iow long before that cRangc, or how it will be brought about, not even the shrewdest financiers pretend to divine. At all events, there is safety and even great prosperity in store for the Western producers if they are willing to avoid going heavily in debt. Keep out of debt, if possible, and future trade .-•presents nothing discouragiug. ......

TI1EELECTION OF JIIOfciES. The action of some of the Judges in the rccent railroad wars in New York has led the people of that State to seriously doubt whether the present system of electing Judges is the most effective means of securing integrity in the position. During one of the previous railroad wars, it was complained that the Judge who, in

Court, was issuing injunctions and writs of mandamus, was also engaged in private consultations with the Wall street brokers who had commenced suit against the rival board of directors. Similar stories are told about the Judge in the present contest for the possession of the Al-

ban}' and Susquehanna Railroad. It is claimed, too, that these stories are supported by certain telegraphic messages addressed to the Judge, with his answers, which have been produced in«tho testimony before the referee, and which will be used when the case is tried. Such cases are frequent, but while they furnish very reasonable grounds for the prevalent complaints against corruption on the judicial bench, it is possible that neither the cause can bp found in the system of electing nor the remedy in the system oi appointing. Under either system there is a ncccssity for greater care in the selection of Judges who are both morally and intellectually qualified for the oftice.

SCHOOL

NOTICE.—The Public Schools

of Union township will open on the first Monday in October, A.I)., 1S69, for a term of five months, and as much longer (if any) as the Tuition Fund will last. It is desired that Directors call their meetings early, and make selection of teachers, so as to promote uniformity throughout the township. We are willing to vote' taxes to build railroads to develop the resources of our State, and promote agricultural and mechanical interests, which is always commendable In any people, but while we are doing this, let us not forget the duty we owe our children, who have'minds to be developed and trained morally and intellectually. I trust that parents and guardians will co-operate with teachers and trustee to make our schools more efficient every year. Teachers have many trials and discouragements to surmount, and need smiles instead of frowns, and hard epithets. All persons who taught private schools in this township last Spring are notified to make report of same to this office without delay.
