in Ohio had a thrifty
orchard, which blossomed freely, but bore no fruit. He washed twelve of the trees once a week with strongsoapsuds, and had a fine harvest the subsequent season.
Mr. II. Woolworth writes to the Hearth and Home that none of his bushes that are near bushes of the black currant have been attacked by the currant worm. He thinks the! odor of the black currant keeps them I away.
PROF. Whitney says, with some littie truth, that there is no class of! workers much better paid for what! they do or treated more honorably than the laborers on the average American farm. He stands higher than the mechanic. If he is worth anything, and has integrity, honesty, and brains, he will soon be able to get a farm for himself.
The Utica Herald says: "Averaging the results of several careful experiments in feeding corn to hogs, shows, that two bushels of corn in the ear, or one bushel of shelled corn, made nine and seven-twentieths pounds of pork, while the same amount ground into meal and mixed with water, made eleven and oneeighth pounds of pork."
ONE rainy day a correspondent of the Country Gentleman counted the number of clover seeds in a cubic inch, and estimated that if he had counted a whole bushel the number would have equalled 27,000,000. As there are 42,560 square inches in an acre, he found that one peck would furnish over one seed to every square inch of ground. His estimates showed that a trifle over one pint of seed to the acre would give ten plants to the square foot.

As, now, each of the parent swallows bring every time from ten to twelve insects, the two destroy in the course of one day at least 6,400 insects. To their own nourishment the parents need about 600 insects daily so that a swallow family destroys daily 7,000, .and in one month 210,000 injurious insects. If the parent swallows, in -the first month, when they are alone, •eat 80,000 insects, for the whole summer a swallow family of seven mem-, "bers consumes 576,000 insects. If -one hundred pairs of swallows make Vtheir nests in a village, these birds and their descendants will in the .course of a single summer eat over *57,000,000 of insects.
