Mian Sieetsery—The Opinm Trade.

The country passed through seem cd flat and marshy, relieved only in the distance by clumps of trees. An occasional tieM of poppies in bloom explained the mystery of how this land can pay such onerous taxes. This innocent-looking flower plays JIO inconsiderable part in the history of two nations. The East Indians, under license from the Government, gather this innocent-looking flower and manufacture it into opium, the entire control of which the (Jovernment claims as a monopoly. The opium is sent to China, and not only extracts the life and energy of John Chinaman, but extracts all the surplus silver out of the Chinese Empire. As I have been engaged in making silver bars in former days, and found that but few of them remained in the hands of the miner, it created a natural curiosity to follow them up and find their ultimate resting place. It is certain that they come to China to pay for tea and silk, for we cannot produce anything else so current with the Chinese merchant but the restless bars do not remain in China.

vices of the

Chinaman are stronger than his avarice, and the precious metal is parted with for the soothing drug which sinks all Chinese troubles into oblivion. The precious bars are traced on into India, and in those impenetrable jungles the track is lost. Perhaps they are used to pay the expenses of the British Government in India, and to enrich venturous young Englishmen who come to this Eldorado in search ot fortune.' The salaries of officers and the general scale of European wages is greater than in any other country on the earth. The Viceroy receives $12,000 per month and an establishment furnished. All other officers are paid and furnished on the same liberal scale. But we cannot linger amidst the soporific influences of the poppies nor vain regrets about the destination of the silver bars the train is speeding on at the rate of about 25 miles per hour, not fast, but just slow enough to see the country.— Cor. San Francifco

Wonders of Xinnte Workmanship.

In the 20th year of Queen Elizabeth a blacksmith named Mark Scaliot made a lock, consisting of 11 pieces of iron, stell and brass, all of which, together with a key to it, weighed but one grain of gold. lie also made a chain of gold, consisting of 43 links, and having fastened this to the lock and key, he put the chain about the neck of a flea, which drew them with case. All these together, lock and .key, chain and liee. weighed only one grain and a half. Oswaldus Norhingerus, who was more famous even thsfn Scaliot for his mi nute contrivances, is said to have made 1,C§0 dishes of turned ivory, all perfect and complete in every part, yet so small, thin and slender, that all of them "were included at once in a cup turned out of a peppercorn of the commonest size. Johannes Shad of Mitelbrach, carried this wonderful work with him to Rome, and showed it -.o Pope Paul V. who sat and counted then/all by tiie help of a pair of spectacles. They were so little as to be almost invisible to the naked eye. Johannes Fcrrarius, a Jesuit, had in his possession cannons of wood, with their carriages, wheels and all other military furniture, all of -which were also contained in a peppercorn of the ordinary size. An artist named Claudius Galius, made for Hippolytus d'Este, Cardinal of Fcrarra, representations of sundry birds sitting on the tops of trees, which, by hydraulic art and secret conveyance of water through the trunks and branches of the trees, were made to sing and clap their wings but at the sudden appearance of an owl out of a bush of the same artifice, they immediately became all

A terrific drought, it is reported,^ prevails in the central portion ol Australia. The road from WaggaWagga to Hay is strewed with the skeletons or decaying carcasses of wretched animals that have perished from starvation or thirst. Horses, cattle and sheep and even the wild animals of the plains—kangaroos, emus and turkeys—are lying dead in all directions, tainting the atmosphere and giving abundant occupation to the crows. A traveler along this route says that the country can only be described as the "Valley of the Shadow of Death.'

WORK is going on rapidly in preparing the material for the great bridge across the Mississippi at St. Louis. Owing to the high state of the water, nothing can at present be done in the construction of the piers and abutments, but work will be resumed about the middle of August.
