Tlic trial of :i certain Mr. Mumler in the New York Court for fraud in producing so-called spiritual photographs in connection with photographs of the natural person has resulted in his acquittal. The trial has revealed a great many actual believers in Spiritualism and a still greater number who acknowledge that there is some mj-stery connected with many of th operations of what are styled •'mediums" which cannot be the results of any known natural causes. Many of the witnesses testified to having had photographs of deceased friends or relatives taken in connection with their own, and none of them could detect any fraud or trick by which the image could have been produced. Among the witnesses were several practical photographers who had gone to JStumler's rooms for the purpose of exposing the fraud if possible, but who had returned either converted or worse perplexed than before.
It is hard to tell exactly what influenced the Court to decide in favor of acquittal. The trial has been the occasion of considerable excitement although spirit photography is not strictly a new profession, having been practiced several years. Mr. Mumler1s statement was as follows:
My experiments have confirmed me in the belief that the power by which these forms are produced is beyond human control, and the experts that have been called by the people have failed to produce a picture made in that manner. I solemnly aseert here that 1 have now but comparatively little knowledge of photography, or chemicals, or science of any kind, further than is absolutely necessary to take ordinary photographic pictures I positively .assert that in the taking of the pictures on which these forms appear, I have never used any trick or device, or availed myself of any deception or fraud in producing them: that the.«c forms have appeared in each and every instance where they have been presented without any elt'ort. except my will-power.
Mr. Townsend, in his concluding argument, entered strongly upon the defense of Spiritualism. He even went so far as to say he believed that spiritualism came in time to fill a gap in the religious world. People were drifting rapidly toward total neglect or unbelief, when spiritualism appeared and woke them up to the importance of the great hereafter.

Galen, tbe most illustrious of his successors, reached the age of one hundred and four. The three sages of Greece, Solon, Thales, and Pitsicus, lived for a century. The gay Democritus outlived them bj' two years Zeno wanted only two years of a century when he died Diogenes ten years more and Plato died at the age of ninety-four, when the eagle of Jupiter is said to have borne his soul to heaven. Xenophon, the illustrious warrior and historian, lived ninety years Polemon and Epicharmus ninety-seven Lycurgus eight)-five Sophocles more than a hundred. Georgias entered his hundred and eighth year and Asclepiades, the physician, lived a century and a half. Juvenal lived a hundred years Pacavius and Varro but one year less. Carneades died at ninety Galileo at sixty-eight Cassini at ninety-eight and Newton at eighty-live. In the last century, Fontenelle expired in his ninety-ninth year Bulfon in his eighty-first Voltaire in his eightyfourth. In the present century, Prince Talleyrand, Goethe, Rogers, and Niemcewicz, are remarkable instances. The Cardinal du Balloy lived near a century and Marshal Moncey lately terminated a glorious career at eighty-five.
Remarkable Works of Human Labor. Nineveh was 14 miles long, 8 miles wide, and 46 miles round, with a wall 100 feet high, and thick enough for three chariots abreast. Babylon was 50 miles within the walls, which were 75 feet thick and 100 feet high, with 100 brazen gates. The Temple of Diana, at Ephesus, was 420 feet to the support of the roof; it was 100 years in building. The largest of the pyramids was 481 feet in hight [sic], and 953 on the sides; the base covers 11 acres; the stones are about 60 [sic] feet in length, and the layers are 208; it employed 320,000 men in the building. The labyrinth in Egypt contained
300 chambers and 12 halls. Thebes, in Egypt, presents ruins 27 miles roumfand 100 gates. Carthage was 20 miles round. Athens was 25 miles round, and contained 350,000 citizens and 400,000 slaves. The Temple of Delphos was so rich in donations that it was plundered of L10,
000,000, and Nero carried away from
it 200 statues. The walls of Rome were 13 miles round.
