BoyhMd.

While yet a boy of ten years old, it was a sore puzzle which we should be,—a farmer, storekeeper, ot a stage driver. The last honorablo business had the preference in our minds. Yet, there were days when the other aamed pursuits strongly urged their attraction. We reflected that if farmer, we should not have to drive the cows to and from the pastures, but should have a boy to do it for us. We should have men to work under and not, as then, be obliged ourselves to work under them. We could mil when wo pleased, and no one «'Oi]]d scold us. In short the attractions of a farming life were manifold.

But, however attractive, we never returned from an errand down town without feeling our preference sha ken. A store was to our young eyes a, mystery of sights and sweets! Ah to be a storekeeper, put m}' fingers whenever I pleased into the candy jar or pepermint drawer! to eat raisins and ligs every day! to get behind the counter, which was always a place of imaginary treasures Besides— but this was a secret and envious thought—1 might, by using pomatum and by diligence with brush and glass, become as smooth and pretty as that dashing clerk, Jim Velvettop. Ah, if my brown cheeks only would look as handsome as his smooth face! But of that I despaired ever\r time I looked into the litrt glass that served purposes ol humility in nij- bed-room. Yes, a merchant I would be.

But one ripping blast on the stagehorn put all these fancies to utter .route. 1 he-re came the stage—'lie great red store—full of passengers, baggage behind and piled on top Hiram Uarnes in the driver's seat, corduroy pants on, a low-crowned, jaunty hat, in one htuul the four reins and in the other tVe whip, whose long la.sii was perfoc'i.ly enchanting to my boyhood, always excepting the occasions when it was swung around to give "a cut behind." But oh. that final dash cf the team. Every Jt•»r ..- had saved up a little Hteain, ami, on coming around the corner, the pace which had been sparkling before, burst into a royal run, rounding up before the tavern in a style that captivated every boy of the least spirit. No, others might b°. farmers and merchants, but our mind was made up, and a stage driver we would be Nor was the charm lost when, on going toward home, we passed Mr. Parker's stage bams, and saw the smoking horses under Ulysses Freeman's hands (Cato and Cannace were his parents), while driver Hiram sunned himself with all the superb airs of a dandy of the barnyard. It was too much! Why were some men born to luck, and others to luckless seclu sion Here were those happy fellows living among horses, whenever they pleased,—the admiration of all the boys in town,—while I, shut up in the door-yard only let out to drive -.the cows, run of errands, or saddest of all to go to school, seemed doomed to a spiritless life.— Ueeckcr.

IT is rarely by sale, that- the old palaccs of Florence pass into the hands of others. But lately there has been an example of such transfer. The Baciocchi Palace has been pur chased by Mr. James Ewing Coolev, of New York. This house was probably built before America was discovered to Europe by Columbus. It forms a part of the vastPicci Palace, built by the ancicnt family of that name. The dimensions of the portion of it now sold are about 110 by 140 feet, which figures will serve to

give

an idea of the extent of these houses The ball-room, which would be rather a wonder in a private house in Londoh or New York, is fort3r by seventy feet, and forty-five feet high. The staircase, without being monumental, is of such gentle rise that it would be easy to make the ascent on horseback. Besides this there are four other staircases in the palace.

TITF. Detroit Post contains an account of a woman who, to "give the Tvorld assurance of a man," went out West, bought forty acres of land, grubbed out fourteen acres of heavy oak, chopped and split rails, built a house, sowed eight acres of wheat, dug ditches, supplied her neighbors with ax-helves and splint baskets, besides attending to her domestic "chorcs," all with ber own hands, in a

year

and a half. She lives alone,

"keeps her own secrets," and is regarded as the "coming woman.'1 Let Ser vote.

A New Hampshire editor, describing the auroral display, is guilty of paying that it was as if "some celes«al mercer had unrolled two or three josen piec#s of silk of the most beau#ful tints of purple, green, bide, lilac jnd white, gathered the ends into his Buds at the ccnitfc, anJ let them flow town to the horisoa."n
