Most of the silk goods used in this country arc woven in France. That country is perhaps more largely engaged in the manufacture than any other country. In 18(: France exported silk stud's to the vaiue of 8l»G,800,000. The importation of silk to this country during the recent war was less than it had previously been, but since the return of peace the demand has revived, and the amount imported is about as large as ever.
Though the mulberry tree, flourishes well here silk has never been produced to any great extent in this country. Those who are past middle life will recollect the '-silk fever'' that swept over New England about forty years ago. Every farmer set out a row of mulberry trees, and when people, met, the talk was of J/arns Multicouliis and raising silk worms. Mat labor here is too dear to make it profitable to gather leaves by hand to feed silk worms. Some excellent silk was made: yet the busines was
not remunerative simply because the
The manufacture of silk is successiV.llv prosecuted in this country, though the raising of it has not been till recently. Silk goods of great excellence are woven, but they are sometimes made to bear French names to make them more salable. "Notwithstanding the failure of ilk I Dre ulture in this country a third of a century ago, it is possible for us to produce our own silk. California has taken it up. The exhibition of raw silk it the Stockton agricultural fair, and at the Mechanics' fair at San Franeisco, which we saw not long since, shows the capability of our State. "With the Introduction of Chinese labor California may become one of the greatest silk producing sections of the world. The prairies of the West— every section of land in our country is suited to the growth of the mulberry. "We look forward to the time, and that not very far distant, when silk culture and manufacture will be one of the great industries of the United I States. Those who are engaged in it are making it profitable, and wc prediet a rapid development, especially in California. We commend the subject anew to the agriculurists of the country.—Boston, Traveller.

A Parisian journalist, who visited the other day the famous ••sleeper" at the Bicetre Hospital, says: '-The *(tv(:as and physicians are perfectly in despair about this singular case. ll AVE a tine ]J ANO for sale at a great bargain. It is no common second-hand Piano which some one is trying to get rid of, but an elegant instrument of wonderful sweet tone.. If you don't believe it, go and see it, and judge for yourself. For a short time only. Head what is said of it:
CiiAWi'onnsviiXK, March 2-1.
A. C. rlK.NNisox—Dear Sir: 1 have had the pleasure, of playing upon the excellent Piano which you offer for sale. As to touch, it is charming in tone, it is rich and solid, excelling especially in the evenness which extends throughout its entire compass, T^j! octave. The case is very handsome. My surprise upon {hiding it so fine an instrument was very agreeable.
