Reports of lunatic asylums are sometimes instructive. For instance, the popular notion that the life of the farmer is most conducive to the mental stability is dispelled by the statistics of lunatic asylums
111
general.
In the Michigan asylum the farming clases preponderates over all other classes and taking the asylums ot the country together, it appears that more than one-fourth ot all the lunatics iu the country are tarmcrs and merchants. With the farmers the cause unquestionably is too much work, too little recreation, and habitual violation of the laws of health— too frequently the laws of cleanliness. Speaking of the farmer's wife, says a writer: Her scant ablutions are performed in haste she has little time to «pend on her person, and none in "which to read. Night finds her weary with much doing. She goes to her bed tired out, to be kept awake half the night, perhaps by a fretful babe. From January to December her only recreation is going to church -—it may be every Sunday, it may be twice a month. Is there any wonder jhat she becomes an inmate of a lunatic asylum This is not only the case with the \vives of small farmers, but those who have added acre to acre grudge money spent for household labor. ..
Women's Right* Twenty Yea#® Hence1 Elizabeth Cady Stanton writes thus of the Women's Rights prospect twenty years hence "Twenty years! Why, I expect to be walking the golden streets of the New Jerusalem by that time, talking with Noah, Moses and Aaron about the flood, the Pharoahs, the journey through the Red Sea and the Wilderness. We shall be holding conventions by that time on the banks of the Jordan with Eve, Sarahs Rebecca, Huldah, Deborah, Miriam, Ruth, Naomi, Sheba, Esther, Vashti, Mary, Elizabeth, Priscillft and Phebe, Tryphena and Tryphosa, and all the strong-minded women honorably mentioned in sacred history. Do you not know that I have vowed never to go disfranchised into the Kingdom of Heaven In the mean time, I propose to discuss sanitary and sumptuary laws, finance and free trade, religion railroads, education and elections in the councils of the American republic. Twenty vears! Why, every white male in the nation will be tied to an apron-string by that time, while all the poets and philosophers will be writing essays on {TheSphere of Man!'
It is stated in recent letters from Havana, that, notwithstanding the in surrection in Cuba, no failures of any consequence have as yet occurred in that city, and that the notes of the Spanish Bank can be sold at a slight discount for gold. All kinds of real and personal estate have declined in price. Houses in Havana, which would have sold for 850,000 a year ago, can be bought for 810,000 now, and even at that rate more sellers than purchasers are to be found. In the interior towns the retail merchants have generally closed up their business, and the retail traders iu Havana it i's asserted, will soon be obliged to follow their example. The poorer clasges have no money to spend, and the wealthier ones are endeavoring to provide for the exigencies of the future by reducing their .expenditures to the lowest possible limit.
