Nearly a year ago the newspapers all orer the land, took occasion to chronicle the advent of a woman's society in New York city, consisting of ladies of literary, artistic, and general social talent or culturc, associated together in a bond of union, under the name of Sorosis. It seems that the press dinner given to Dickens about that time, was indirectly the lirst can*: of this organization. Certain literary women made a proposition to the committee having in charge the management of the testimonials to Mr. Dickens, that ladies as well as gentlemen of the press should be present, and appropriately unite in homage to genius, and the rejection of this proposition stimulated the formation of a representative woman's club. Meetings were held and arrangements made for perfecting an organization, in which Mrs. Parton. Miss Kate Field, Mrs. Croly, Madame Botta and others took part. Meanwhile Mrs. Croly saw in a botanical dictionary the word Sorosis, signitVing growth, aggregation, perfection, and, secondarily, as a result of such aggregation. a rich fruit growing out of many (lowers. This seemed a happy designation for such a union as was contemplated, and was preferred to another of somewhat kindred significance, namely. "Umbel." At the following meeting. Sorosis was adopted as the name of the association, but at a subsequent meeting Miss Kate Field succeeded in having it set aside, and that of "Womaiis League" substituted. The members, however, regretted the change as soon as it was made, and at another meeting the original name was restored.
The Sorosis has now nourished during a revolving year, and a few weeks since its first annual meeting was held at Delmonico's, and its Executive Committee reported its progress to have been all that could be Avished. Nineteen regular club meetings have been held during its lirst year, and it has now eighty three members (including eight who arc honorary) in good and regular standing. 'Six of these are artists, or workers in art there arc twenty-two authors, six editors, one historian, eleven poets, nine teachers and lecturers, eight well-known philanthropists, two physicians, four writers 011 science, and others who are contributors to periodicals. The Society has recently been incorporated by the State—giving' it. we presume, the right to sue and be sued, collectively, or individually, with oilier corporation rights and privileges—and is held to lie on the highway of its mUsion.

And in our government the vote is the wheel and rudder, and controls the motion of the ship, l'ut that into woman's hand, and she need petition no more for rightsbut assume and exercise them.

,WK have learned since our last that fifteen young Avornen have just been graduated from the Woman's Medical College Pennsylvania, as physicians, and that there is also such a colleg at Cleveland Ohio, Philadelphia, hoAvever, takes the lead in the neAv movement, to open the doors of the medical profession to women.
