SB HOUSE, FARM AND vURBEN.

HOUSE-WARMING.—In

geous

"The

is

the country, we have noted the various ways in which farmers wan?* their sitting rooms. A cast-iron box stamped with figures of impossible flowers, weird arabesques, and

gor

and chimeras dire, is the gen

eral preference. Bad in taste, worse for health,

true or wise economy.

You don't want hot air in your sit-ting-room, but heat, radiated from a glowing surface or from flame. An open fire may cost, in fuel consumed, the price of a cord of wood or two. What of it, farmer! Will not the industry of two days enable you to cut and sled or cart home that much more Economize in dress, clip your tobacco-bill, drink cold water, if you must, bi]t dpii't scrimp the wood-pile. Give yourself the unbought luxury of a warm, bright hearth in your homo.

PotaTois.-—Experience

proves that potatoes should be kept through the Wittier in a dry and cold atinosphelf®"—the drier the better, provided it be above the freezing poitifc. All changes of temperature or of the degrees of moisture are unfavorable Where only small quantities are to be stored, as for family use, they should be assorted into barrels, the interstices filled with sun-dried sand, and the whole covered with nicely fitted turfs. Sprouting or shrivelling is thus prevented, and much of the original freshness of the 1 potato is retained.

cultivation of silk in Califor-

dia is reported as being itt a highly prosperous condition. While in France and Italy the silk worm is atfected by a fatal disease, on the Pacific coast of the United States the eggs are sonnd and the worms are healthy and vigorous. It is stated I that orders have been sent from Europe to the Crlifornia silk growers for all the £ggs they can produce for, yjar« to come at $4 per ounce, each ounce containing 40,000 eggs. The •California Legislature has sought to •encourage this valuable interest by offering a premium of §250 for cultivaSiirio- 5,000 mulberry trees for silk culture, and $300 for every 100,000 silk cocoons produced in good merchantable order.

Picric

acid is a,substance much

used in dying and is made by treating pulverized indigo with nitric acid. A combination of this acid with potash, forming a salt crystallizing in beautiful needles, was found to be very explosive when exposed to heat, *and experiments have recently beeia maade with it in the manufacture of a. new gunpowder, which is described to be a mixture of picrate and nitrate of potash, tempered or moderated ns reqoired, by the addition of charcoal. By this means a more powerful gunpowder

obtained, having the advantage of doing away with sulphur, greatly diminishing the smoke a.nd causing very little injury to firearms.

California Farming.—Ibe San Francisco papers complain tfoai, the yield of wheat in California feats fallen from forty bushels an acre down to twenty bushels and that, if the present improvident style of farming continues, the crops will not average over twelve bushels an sere, fhe old custom of burning the stubble and straw, instead of turning it into compost, has been revived. If the practice is not abandoned, the worn-out wheat fields of California, it is asserted, cannot be restored without great expense and the application of the best agricultural skill.

THE bee cholera has become an epidemic in Clinton county, Ohio. One bee raiser lost 30 out of 80 hives. He has discovered that the bees are atacked with a violent purging. The matter evacuated being of a glutinous quality, clings to the bees in such a manner as to retard their motion. Their wings become glued up, and in attempting to fly they drop down a short distance from their hives and perish.

AN improved lamp, for burning the products of petroleum, has recently been invented. The tube containing the wick extends nearly to the bottom of the reservoir holding the oil, and all the air to support combustion must pass down through the wick and tube, and then pass up through the liquid. Lamps made on this principle, it is claimed, will not explode.
