The manufacture of wood-soled boots and shoos is one of the latest Boston novelties. It is claimed that they will last much longer, are impervious to water, and only cost about one half as much as leather.
A man at Rye Beach the other day tried to start a balky horse recently by building a lire under him. The horse lay down upon the tire and put it out. This as well as other persuasives was tried and failed utterly, and the man had to give it up.
The recent flood at and near Baltimore exerted enormous force. An immense piece of rock, lying in the bed of the Patapsco, near Sykesville, was observed after the flood to have changed its base, having been forced down the stream about fifty feet from where it formerly lay, and elevated b3' the force of the water tally six feet. An accurate measurement of this piece of rock showed its weight to be (J 8 tuns.
Cresson has been visited by burglars. T1 lihed the Mountain House and several cottages of jewelry, silver-ware, and money to .a large amount. In one cottage they brought from the cellar champagne and such delicacies and substantiate as they could find, and in the dining room regaled themselves with a regular champagne supper. They then decamped, taking an entire service of silver and about one thousand dollars in money and jewelry. There seems to be not the slightest clue to the .thieves.
The Boston Journal says that the recent interpretation of the law by the Assessors of Internal Revenue, requiring job printers to pay a tax upon their productions, was regarded! by man}- of the craft as illegal. Major J»hn H. Eastburn, a leading printer of Boston, desirous of testing the questions for the benefit of all declined to pay, and though threatened with a suit, maintainad his position. On Wednescla.y last he received a letter from the authorities at Washington, which says that unless a printer produces work which is sold by others on his account, lie is not liable to a manufacturer's tax.
A soldier named Cockroft was wounded in the lower part of the abdoman at the assault on Petersburg, 1865. The wound was probed at the time and gradually healed. Recently, however, Cockroft was taken with symtoms of gravel, and it was thought necessary to perform the usual operation for stone in the bladder. This took place at the Soldiers' Home, .Newark, N. J., last week, when a cast-iron ball was found in tliat region, deeply iiicrusted upon one side by depasits of urinary salts, and weighed one ounce and twenty-three grains. It was removed while the patient was under the influence of chloroform. He is now doing well.
