ftcymonr's Trnthful Sentiments.
Horatio Seymour, just before the last Connecticut State election, and when too late for effective refutation, made a Democratic speech at Bridgeport, wherein he stated as unquestionable facts that
I. "It will cost this year more than $140,000,000 to maintain an arm)* to keep the South in subjugation."
II. "More than $300,000,000 per year have been wasted in order to uphold this policy of reconstruction.''
III. "Now 400,000,000 per annum are raised, and out of it the public creditor gets but $100,000,000/'
We have been careful to give Horatio Seymour's exact words, just as reported for and printed in the Worid —on the very eve of an important election. Now we will thank the San to answer categorically three questions: 1. Were these assertions, or either of them true 'i 2. If not true, were they mistakes which a decently informed American statesman could honestly fall into

Brick I'omeroy's La Crosse Democrat says: "Grant is made of the right stuff for a Republican President. He is a drunkard a butcher of men a seeker after spoils the great national murderer a betrayer a fool."
The Hon. G. H. Pendleton is 6f a different opinion. In his recent speech at Bangor he bore manly tribute to the Republican candidates. We quote: ':I shall not disparage the ability or -character -of our1 opponents. I would not, if I could, pluck one leaf from the laurels of Gen. Grant. Whatever may be his ability as a soldier he has stood the test of success, and, so far as I have known, he lias borne himself with moderation and magnanimity in his high ollice. I have known Mr. Colfax will for many years. I have seen him in possession of great power. He is an amiable and estimable gentleman, and would perform with dignity the duties of the high office to which he aspires.
