How happy must that man have been throughout all these long years in not having been obliged to read windy editorials or listen to a single politi cal speech. We doubt if Adam's estate was more to be coveted, even in his bachelor or honeymoon days.

A soldier, being on picket reserve, went to a farmhouse, as he said, to borrow a frying pan, but for what none could imagine, as there was nothing to fry. However, he went to the house, and knocked at the door, which was opened by a lady, who asked what he wished. "Madam, could you lend me a fry-ing-pan I belong to the picket clown here.''

Yes. sir," and forth with came the pan He took it, looked in it, turned it o\ ei and looked at the botton, and tii turned it over again, and looked into 11 very hard, as if not certain it was clean. The Utica lie rah says many former dairymen in New York have gone out of the business, and the amount of cheese made in the Slate this year will be loss than that made last: year. The herds in the great dairy regions are doing well.

The Colorado I'olato

The Colorado potato bug has appeared among ns. This terribly de structive insect, which lor several years has been progressing eastward at a rate computed at thirty miles a year, and which was reported at the last meeting of tlie Indiana Horticultural Society to have entered the Northwestern counties of that State during 1867. seems to have made some forced inarches, so as to have reached the neighborhood of Cincinnati in June, 1808.

Specimens of the" ten-lined spearbearer (Dori//horn lO-h'/tcala) have been seen and taken in this neighborhood within a few days. They may be the precursors of a more numerous horde, that are coining to destroy the potato crop of this region, as they have done farther west but if only the advanced guard of the grand army, still they should be looked after and destroyed, before they can have an opportunity of committing the terrible ravages to which they are addicted.

That they may be readily identified by every one interested, the following brief but unscientific description is added Perfect insect, abatte, nearly hemispherical, like a lady bug. about one-third of an inch in its longest diameter shining black, with longitudinal lines of a dull- yellow color: where the wing-covers meet the lines are narrower, so that when at rest the insect appears to have but nine lines instead of ten. or five on each wing cover.

These insects are destructive in both the larval and perfect state, and they consume the foliage of the potato and analagous plants. They have been found here upon the egg plant, eating the leaves.— Cin. Gazelle. I

This Settlement, which has sprung into existence since 1SG1, i.s one of the marvels of the age. It was latchvisited by the New Jersc}' Editorial Association, and is thus described by a correspondent of the N. Y. Times:

This infant city of 11,GUI) inhabitants, which has sprung into existence withiujive years, in the midst of a wilderness that certainly has literally been made to blossom as the rose, is the one New Jersey marvel more marvelous than marl, and a visit to it was wisely included in the programme.

The sagacious foresight, enterprise and perseverance of Mr. Charles 31. Laudis, were the magician's wand at whose bidding the settlement sprung into existence. I11 18G1 this gentleman commenced'purchasing land in this locality, and by 18(55 had obtained about 28,000 acres (forty-five square miles). To actual settlers who are willing to comply with the rules adopted for the government of the colony, small farms of not more than twenty acres were sold on time for small prices, and possession was not given until certain actual improvements had been made by the purchaser. Speculators were excluded, the selling of intoxicating drinks was pro- CAMPBELL lnbitcd, schools, churches, lyceunis. and libraries were established, and evcry inducement ottered to sober and industrious people to settle there.

They came in swarms, a large proportion of them from New England and the Middle States many front other parts, and the result lias been wonderful. A community has been established, founded upon no peculiar religious belief, but one in which. with an intelligent tolerance, everything is permitted that conduces to the general welfare, and nothing that opposes it. The plan of the founder seems to guarantee to all, with the mildest restraint, a title to healthful life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The policy which governs the settlement lias been set forth in few words, as follows: 1. Wide and straight streets and avenues, generally intersecting each other at right angles. 2. Shade trees and sidewalks to ail the streets. 3. Every purchaser required to improve his land within a specified time. 4. Fruit-growing encouraged, in connection with general farming, consequently, small farms and a dense population. 5. The best available sj'stcm of public schools. 6. No fences required. 7. No intoxicating liquors allowed to be sold in the place. 8. Agricultural, horticultural, floral and other societies, for the improvement of the peo-
