WIT AND WISDOM.
THEKR'S to be an asylum for indignant—or indigent—old maids at Boston.
Why is the root of the tongue like a dejected man Because it's down in the mouth.
Ax old bachelor says the talk of women is usually about men even heir laugh is but "he! he: he!"
THERE is a man out West who drinks so much whiskey that musquitoes that bite him die of delirium tremens.
HATE not. It is not worth while Your life is not long enough to make it pay to cherish ill will or hard thoughts toward any one.
IT won't do to stir up a man when lie is thinking, any more than it will a pan of. milk when the cream is rising.
A GOOD wife is like a printer's roller, which is composed of molasses and glue. She is sweet as the former article and sticks to her husband like the latter.
A FRIEND, in allusion to the practice of buying and selling wives in Egypt, said that though his wife didn't cost him a cent lie was cheated in the bargain.

MRS. PARTINGTON savs that if she should be cast away she would prefer meeting with the catastrophe in the bay of Biscuits, for then she should have something to live on. 7
ONE of our exchanges praises an egg which it sa}*s "was laid

our
table by the Rev. Mr. Smith." Mr. Smith seems to be a layman as well as a minister.
AN ugly young lady is always anxious to marry, and young gentlemen arc seldom anxious to marry her. This is a resultant of two mechanical powers—the inclined plane and lcavelier.
AN Irishman being in church where the collection apparatus resembled an election box, and on its being passed to him, whispered in the carrier's ear that he was not naturalized and could not vote, but he was ready to make a speech.
BRIGHAM YOUNG attended the theater recently with six aozen of his daughters. Three or four dozen more are understood to have been on the stage. The rest of the family were kept at home to take their turn another time.
A YOUNG man in Chicago named Benedict, disgusted after a spree, undertook to shoot himself the other day, but the bullet flattened against the skull—showing in a very striking manner how hardened young men become in Chicago.
A BADLY bunged up Irishman, in response to the inquiry, -'where have you been said, "down to Mrs. Mulrooney's wake, and an illegant time we had of it. Fourteen fights in fifteen minutes only one whole nose left in the house, and that belonged to the tav-kettle."
A NEWLY married fool in Bloomington locked his wife out of the bed room one night last week, whereupon the spirited creature smashed the door "with an axe, and went triumphantly to bed. The lady is said to be handsome, and the husband is certainl}' a greater ass than Thompson's historic colt.
A SOLDIER obtained permission to visit his family. lie bought tickets up and back, and got into the train. A clergyman was on the same car. The soldier was swearing like a demon, when the clergyman addressed him, saying: "My^Sear soldier, you are going in on the road to hell."
The soldier quickly answered: "Never mind, father, I have tickets up and back."
Two Hoosier belles were recentl}* driving in a buggy on plank road, near Indianapolis. v,.i' cing asked lor toll, inquired: "How much is it V" ..."For a man anu a horse." replied the gate keeper, "it is fifty cents." "Well, then, get out of the way, for we are gals and a mare. Get up, Sail!"
And away they went, leaving the man in mute astonishment.
A GRKEN COUNTY lad came rushing into the house of a neighbor and said: "Mammy sent me to borry a head of cabbage and a little piece of meat to boil with it wants to borrow a rag to patch the seat of Bill's breeches we are goin' to have a mighty cuttin1 and slashin' to our house toda}r goin' to make Bill a new coat out'n dad's old un, and dad a new 'un out'n the old blanket."
A MACKEREL STORY.—A clergyman in Southern Arkansas had occasion recently to circulate a subscription paper to obtain boards to shingle the church edifice. Among others he called on Mr. N a merchant of the place, a liberal man where the object was worthy, who subscribed five dollars.. Soon afterward the "clergyman called for the money, but
Mr. N having occasion to pay out all his funds that day, was short and asked the parson to call again. /This did not precisely accord with the clerical wishes, so casting his eyes around the store, they fell upon a kit of mackerel which he thought would be good for ministers. "How much for mackerel asked ,his reverence. "Five dollars a kit," responded the merchant. "Well, if you like, I'll take the. kit for your subscription." "All right, parson but this is the first time I ever heard of shingling a church with mackerel!"-"

LAST year 2,733 bales of cotton were raised in Southern Illinois.
WHEAT will be harvested in Georgia in a fortnight, and a igood crop is promised.
WOOL-GROWERS are still unable to decide whether it is bestto wash their wool. In Central Illinois the sheep men have built a factory, and they sell cloth instead of wool.
AT Lyons, France, the Veterinary College has been broken up by the Government, because the young horse students refused to pray for tlieJEmperor.
IN Algeria, Africa, and near the towns where Marius mused and Cato practiced phlebotomy, land of the first quality can be had at from one dollar to one dollar and a quarter an acre. ...
GOVERNOR WISE gives a pressinginvitation to Northern farmers to come to Virginia "with their money and strong arms to buy cheap land, to add to the wealth of the State, and to keep down the negroes.
THE Ohio Reform Farm, near Lancaster, has 1,170 acres. There are over nine hundred boys, mostly criminals, who behave well, who are engaged in growing small fruits, and their returns last year, after having all thev wanted to eat, exceeded $7,000/
THE English wonder why foreign manufacturers do not copy the design of agricultural impliments made by British artisans. Americans are not likely to do this so long as with their own designs they carry awav prizes from the English and all Europe.
A PRACTICAL farmer says his wagon tires "wear out before they get loose," and the reason is lie saturates the felloes thoroughly with linseed oil before the tires are set. The felloes are placed in hot oil for about one hour, and arc thus rendered perfectly waterproof, so that the shrinking and swelling that loosens the tire are prevented.
HOG CHOLERA.—The Boonville Enquirer says Many of our farmers arc losing their hogs and young pigs by this" fatal disease, in this vicinity. Mr. John Smith, living five miles northwest of Boonville, informs us that within two weeks he has lost 27 head, and that his neighbor, Mr. John, Esq., has lost nearly as many by the same disease, in the same length of time.
'WOOL GHOWKH"' writes to the Western Mural as follows: "Last year some one having a deep interest in the poor man recommended early shearing, saj'ing the "wool would be in better condition besides the sheep would do much better." The result was a loss in Michigan of from 10,000 to 20,000 sheep, which died from being shorn too early, and a loss of one to two pounds of fleece on all thus earls' shorn. The wool sold for no better price than heavier llceces taken off later in the season. I)o not kill your sheep by shearing too early, but wait until you have some right hot dav to start the grease."
A WHITEK who says his cow gives all the milk that is wanted in a family of eight peasons, and from which was made 200 pounds of butter in the year, gives the following as his treatment. He says: "If you desire to get a large yield of rich milk, give j-our cow, three times a daj', water slightly warmed and slightly salted, in which bran has been stirred at the rate of one quart to two gallons of water. You will find, if you have not found this bj* daily practice, that your cow will gain 25 per cent, immediately under the effect of it, and she will become so attached to the diet as to refuse to drink eleaa water unless very thirsty, but this mess she will drink any time and ask for more. The amount of this drink is an ordinary water-pail full each time, morning, noon and night. Your animal will then do her best at discounting the lacteal. Four hundred pounds of butter are often obtained from good stock, and instances are mentioned where the yield was even at a higher figure."
THE March report of the Statistician of the Department of Agriculture includes several items relating to farm animals.
The returns of numbers and prices of live stock show a light increase during the year in horses, mules, csittte and milch cows, and a decrease in sheep. The New England States exhibit a decrease of from six to thirteen per cent, in swine. The Southern States from five to twenty-five per cent., except Arkansas and Tennessee, which give an increase of twenty-three and twelve per cent, respectively. Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin show a slight decrease Indiana and Michigan, no material change Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska, an increase.
A diminution in numbers of sheep is noticed in every State except New Jersey, Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska.
The decrease in prices is more marked than in nnmbers, amounting in many States to a reduction of thirty or forty per cent. The aggregate decrease is not less than thirtyfive millions of dollars, averaging nearty a dollar a head. A reduction is noticed in the prices of horses and mules in every section of the country. In comparison with those of last year, the decline is more apparent in the Southern States than elsewhere, owing to the gloomy state of Iceling. In the cotton section where returns were-made, the pric,e of -cattle is reported higher than last year, in many of the States with the exception of milch cows, which have very generally decreased in value.—Philadelphia Bulletin.
