The Tectta of a Horse. At five years of age 9. horse has teetkr4rtwelve mtflaR or jaw fec&tV.tomvc incisor front teeth, between the molars and incisors- but usually wanting in the mave..

At lifrth only the two nippers fcrimiddle incisors appear. At a

old the incisors are all visi

ble on the first or milk set. Before thvee years the permanent nippers have come through,. _-1. ,.

At four years old the permanent dividers next to the incisors are cut At'five the mouth is perfect, the second set of teeth Luving been complete

At six the -hollow under the nipper, called the mark, has disappeared from the nippers, and diminished iu the dividers.

At Seven the mark has disappeared from the dividers, and the next teeth or corners are level, though showing the mark.

At eight the mark has gone from the corners, and the horse is said.to be aged. After this time, indeed good authorities say that after live years, the age ol' a horse can only be conjectured. But the teeth gradually change their form, the incisors becoming round, oval and triangular. Dealers sometimes bishop "ie teeth of old horses that is. scoop t!u".n out to imitate the mark but this can Uknown by the absence of the white edge of the enamel which always surrounds 'the real mark, by the shape 6f*the* teeth, and other marks of age about the animal.—llural Gentleman.

BFECS.

There is no branch of rural economy which is so much neglected and so little understood as the rearing of bees The importance will be appreciated when when it is made plain that with judicious and intelligent management they can be made to pay the tnterest on our State debt now, and the principal in a few years. This is an important result when we take into consideration that its production does not_diminish/a single iota of any other produclfon!

As to the management of bees, it is best to have a hive with moveable frames, and a convenient means of feeding then watch them closely, and if it is found that they are not working .properly, it is best to examine the hive in detail, and the cause of the: ill-work ing will in all probability be found to

IM JetJ Potatoes.

C-

VWo Have had dried apples, and dried peaches, and dried fruits of various kinds, for a long time in the market but we have never have heard $f dr&Lhg ..potatoes until now. A Mr. Francis'II.

Smith, of Baltimore, has been experimenting on potatoes, sweet and com- ..•: moil Irish, with reference to preserving them fresh and nice for an indefinite time. The potatoe has heretofore been good only for a limited time— a few months at the longest—and the sweet potato after a few days or weeks oven

Idscs "some of its best qualities Mr. Smith has succeeded in preserving the potato sjmply by drying it, so that a dish of the best quality can be had at any p'erio'd of the year, -as Afresh? and dry and sweet as though newly dug. So he says, and so the editor of the Scientific American seems to think he has done. If he can, introduce his plan of curing and drying the sweet potato

into the South, lie thinks he will have furnished planters with' more than a compensation•foi-the luss of the cotton itrade.

1 Garden Tools.

The Wcsttrn Rural suggests that a set of _gqo^ implemente facilitates garden work. The garden spade is an institution in itself rwhich cannot be dispensed with altogether, although in many places it is snperseded by the digging fork, which is a better instrument, as with it the ground cari-be tilled jmore /effectual ajad with -less -labor. Hoes of different Shapes aiid 'sizes4re a necessity in every^ gardw.. Tlie Dutch shuffle hoe is an exccellent implement for .'cutting: weeds and grass on grCffel walks, as with it the worjc can he done without iniuring the walk.. A reel and line is indispensable in laying out walks, borders, or rows of vegetables. A Set of drill-markers of different dimensions will be found useful. Enkes of various sizes, sprinklers with fine and coui-sp noses, weeding and transplanting trowels, a hand-roller, a water cask and a wheel-barrOw arfe also necesfeaiy.

either the. loss of the queen, or the presence of the worm or moth—the moth must be removed, and a qecn furnished but if persons owning bees are disposed to neglect them, then such persons should never meddle with pattent hives, but'should make a hive ot good clear 1^ inch lumber, make the hive, say twenty inches high and sixteen inches square 1£ inch hole in the top. put on'a box with glass in the end, and a slide to keep out the light it will soon be filled, then replace it with another. Give them plenty of salt—the bees like it, and the moth don't.

Plant a Grape Tine.

Every Mmer,-'aud every onefwhorhas a vadant spot of ground suitable for the purpose, should consider whether he can do better than to set out one or more grape vines. The varieties known are now so numerous and diverse, that it will not be difficult to find among them one which shall be appropriate to the proposed situation, and bear fruit which shall meet the taste and wishes of the .cultivator. The care required, especially if the number of vines be small, is not excessive, aijd it ••will be found rather a pleasure than a toil to give the jfiesessaiy attention. The^ .growth is comparatively rapid—in a" few' years only from the time of setting, out, ample reward may be expected in the shape of luscious fruit. Besides a grapevine which has once attained a healthy maturit}-, is no Slimmer flower, destined to bloom awhile and die and decay with reasonable care and average good fortune, it will last a lifetime, constonly .^earing..larger and larger^.qropSj and ^•ejyaying- -the? original "investment a thousand times over.— Country Gentleman.

The Sto.tc Fair just closc.d (at. Sufialo) was' ain unexanijilud success in nearly every department. The interest which, usually ccnlers upon geiving machines w»s.not wanting. 11 jvas intensified, doubtless, by the angry (and not altogether reputable) dispnta •which has arisen over the "medals'? said to have been awarded at the Paris Exposition. But: these medals counted for nothing hero, for the judpres insisted upon a tborougii-exr iiminai!on for themselves of the several machines in coin petition, and ho result was a nnanimt.us report awarding the highest prize to the exhibitors of the "Singer" for the best family sewing machine also for the best manufacturing machine, an also for the best bitfon-hole machine. A clean sweep and a rigliteons judgement say those who are best informed It was suggested by many who saw tlie magni'lccnt display made of these machines, and'the variety :aml admirable quality of th.e work they performed, that the manufacturers were remiss in not sending them 'to the Paris Exposition, and thus.have obviated the bitter controversy, being carried oq' over the gold medal. But the Singer M'ariuiacturing Company/whose sales of-machines for the past year hay'e exceeded forty-three thousand-(some thousand., more ..han any other company in the world) caie nio.re f^r'the "people's verdict," we appi',eti, enl. than for all the gold medals that were Or could have been awarded at Paris. ^Sb Exhil)ition at Buffalo, to which we have alfuded, was 'made' by the enterprising agents of! the Singer machines in Utica.—
