Treatment of Scarlet Fever. As this disen.se generally prevails to a greater or less extent
during
the spring
season, we publish the following suggestions from an accomplished physician relative to its premonitory symptoms and treatment:
The first symptoms are a peculiar redness of the eye-balls, very feverish, skin discolored—hard and dry—languidness, want of appetite, and great lVetfulness.
So great is the necessity of knowing of its first symptoms, that the greatest possible care and attention is required, in order to assist nature in throwing off or bringing the disease to the surface.
This disease develops so rapidly and is so dangerous, that it requires not only the best of care and nursing, but the immediate services of an experienced physician.
The following treatment will be found highly efllcacious: When the first symptom :h noticed
give a hot bath, with tea made of sage. 1'iiinip or wood bitney: let the fluid remain in the water ten or fifteen min-
absolutely necessary. the fever if the child in very red or scarlet blotches all over the person.
Great caution should be exercised to prevent chills or a relapse. If the lungs are much stuffed and there is much depression in breathing, take red onions, slice and fry in hot lard, make a flannel bag with strings for the neck and waist, ami place over the chest and throat. If the fever is very high, bind warm, mashed onions about the wrists, ankles, and soles of the feet.
Diet.—Warm kettle-teas with toasted stale bread or water crackers corn meal gruel made light, sweetened with loaf sugar rice and rice-water, salt flavor. No grease whatever should be allowed of any kind. During convalescence, roasted tart apples, canned peaches, a little port or sherry wine now and then,, diluted to suit the age of the child soft boiled eggs with toasted stale bread crumbs "chicken broth, made with rice and salt. The fat must be skimmed off.
The room should be kept at an even temperature of about 70 degrees, day and night, and also must be kept dark or nearly so ten or fifteen days, to preserve the eyesight. Putting a green shade over the eyes in addition to the darkened room will be of service.— Great quietness during sickness is indispensable.
A Ilacsftl 31aw Proven EiiesoccbI. The readers of the Journal will recollect the circumstances attending the robbery of an old man's house in the neighborhood of Greenwood, Johnson county, tbc result of which was that the old gentleman was shot by the burglars, and died in about two days. Two men were arrested for the murder and confined in the jail at Franklin, from which they were taken by a Greenwood mob and hanged, Ouo of the suspected murderers stoutly declared his innocence at the time, and agonizingly begged for time at the hands of his merciless judges to say his prayers and have the ministrations of a preacher. His request was
refused. :md he was strung up alongside I
of the one who is vet believed to have
been guilty of the murder. Circumstan ces have'since developed which prove beyond a shadow of a doubt the entire innocence the one of tho hanged men we have mentioned, and the Grand Jury of the. Circuit Court of Johnson county, which met on Monday last, are to thoroughly investigate the outrage, and indict the participators in it for murder. -It is a shocking thing to consider that a perfectly innocent man lost his life at the hands of a frenzied mob, and for the sake of law and the safety of society, we hope tliat the parties who murdered this man may be called to a strict account.—Ind. Journal.

The greatest care cannot be taken at first to bring out the fever, to prevent its striking some weak or vital part. "When fever or disease is developed, bathe-twice a day, morning and evening, in warm water, sponging or using an old linen cloth, so as not to break the skin and after drying with softest of towels, anoint with sweet or olive oil (using a feather) the entire person. The throat ami glands should have special care. The whole person should be examined frequently to prevent malformation or abscesses. If the throat or glands are much swollen, bind about them pickled pork rind, with iftout half an inch of fat, which should be applied warm.

<Constitutional law-abiding> men. But when the Constitution can't be twisted, to suit their convenience, they talk of war. So talked the traitors of South Carolina. So talked the Knights of the Golden Circle, and to day if the President is not allow'd to carry out Democratic ideas in violation of law, they talk of war, and of gibbetting men of the opposite party. Always consistent is this Democratic party.—<Lebanon patri- [sic] ot>. ---<>---

Copper, iron and lead are found in inexhaustablc quantities along the base of the mountains for a long distance from the Colorado line north. Good serviceable coal can be found in quantities to suit all over the Laramie Plains, in which same neighborhood a goodly sprinkling of oil and mineral springs have been reported. In the new territory the agriculturist will fmd excellent farming lands contiguous to the mountain ranges, which will always afford good markets for the produce he may raise. ---<>---

CLOT DEESS GOODS,
SINGER SEWING MACHINES.
New York State Fair.
The State Fair just closed (at Buffalo) was an unexampled success in nearly every department. The interest which usually centers upon sewing machines was not wanting. It was intensified, doubtless, by the angry (and not altogether reputable) dispute which has arisen over tho "medals" said to have "been awarded at the Paris Exposition. But these medals counted for nothing here, for the judges insisted upon a thorougn es•iininatinn for themselves of the several machines in competition, and the result was a unanimous report awarding the highest prize to ihc exhibitors of the, "Singer" for the best family sewing machine also for the best manufacturing machine, an also for the best hattori-hola machine. A cle.in sweep and a righteous judgement say those who are best informed. It was suggested by innay who saw the mngniOcent display made of tlie,-:e machines, and the variety and admirable •[iiality of the work they performed, that the manufacturers were remiss in not sending them to the Paris Exposition, and thus have obviated the bitter controversy being carried on over the gold medal. But the linger Manufacturing Company, whoso sales of machines for the past year have exceeded forty-three thousand (some I thousands more thin any other company in the world) care mere for the "people's verdict," we apprehend, than for all the gold medals that wure or could have been awarded at Paris. Tho inhibition at Buli'nlo, to which we have alluded, was made by the enterprising agents of the linger machines iu Utiea.— Uliea Daily Herald, (Jet. 'J.
