Deddiiult,:

a Newark macmni^ has inventiid nikn one that, movud b}* sta/im, will perfprm some of tho most important functions of humanity, tliat will, landing, upright, walk pr run, as he is bid, 4ft onjvdirexjtion, and at almost any rate of ppeed, drawing after him a load, whoso weight would tax the strength of three stout.draught horses ^hc hi8tory of this curioui. invention

Is as follows A a. I Six -years .-ago, Mr. Deddriok, the Inventor, who is at present but twenty two years of ago, conceived the novel idea of inventing a man that should receive its vitality from a per.petual motion machine. The idea was based on tho well knawn mechanical principle that if a heavy weight ^bo placed at th" top of an upright, .slightly inclined from a vertical grav .itution, will tend to produce a horizontal as well as vertical motion.

The project was not successful.— [However, by observing carefully the .cause of failure, preserving and per--fecting the man form, and by substi

this would be working iho legs faster

than would be safe on uneven ground or on broad street cobble stones, it is proposed to run the engine at the rate of five hundred revolutions per minute, which would walk the man at (be modest rate of a half a mile per

minute.

The fellow is attached to a common rockaway carriage, the shafts of which support him in a vertical position.— These shafts are two bars of i-on. which are made fast in the usual man Dcr to the front axle of the carriage, and are curved so as to be joined to a circular sustaining bar, which passes around the waist, like a girth, and in which the man moves so as to face in anjT direction. Besides these motions, machinery has been arranged

tuting steam instead of the perpetual been vcrj* much pleased to notice that machine, tho present success of our fellow-townsman, P. S. KENNEDY, E-q. Mr. K. possesses all tho ro-

_cnotion Jwns attained. The man stands seven feet nino in- ...... jcbes high, tho other dimensions of the

BO

as to

throw the figure backward and forward from a vertical, nearly forty five' degrees. This is done in order to enable rt to ascend and doscend all grades To the 6^1rs of the feet spikes or corks are i. -w, which effectually prevent {slipping. Tho whole affair is so firmly BUbtained by the shafts, and has BO excellent a foothold that two men are unable to push it over, or in any way throw it down. In order to enable it to

it

is provided with

two appliances, one of which will, as before stated, throw it backward from the vertical, whilo tho other bends tho knee in a direction

In order to prevent

to the

natural position. An upright post, which is arranged in front of the dashboard, and within easy reach of the front seats, sustains two miniature pilot wheels, by the turning of which these various motions and evolutions arc directed. It is expected that a sufficiently large amount of coal can be stowed away under tho back scat of the carriage to work the engine for a da)', and enough water in a tank under the front soat to last naif a day.

tltho

The cost of tho "first man'' is $2,000 though tho makers propose to manufacture succeeding ones, warranted to run a year without repairs, for $300. The same parties expect to construct, on the same principle, horses which will do the duty of ten or twelve of the Bam.o species* These, it is confidently believed, can bo used .alike before carriages, street cars and plows. The man now constructed can, make his. way without difficulty over an}irregular surface whoso ruts and stones are net moro than nine inches below or abovo the level of the road.

Scott county, Iowa, pays bounties on gopher scalps, .while Muscatine county pays a premium for the tails of the ''beasts," and a nice.littlo game has been practiced during the past year, by which the two counties have puii'ii for the scalps and tails of tho

same gophers—a 'striking example ofjCreteB and Turks. Tho former were '[heads I win, t.ails you loue." successful.

Steam i's'generated in the bo.iy or the trunk, which is nothing but a three horse power engine, like those used in our steam fire engines. The legs which .support it are complicated and wonderful. Tho steps are very natural and quite easily f.akeri. As tho body is thrown forward on the advanced foot, tho other is lifted from the ground by a spring and thrown forward by the steam. Each step or pace advances the body two feet, and every rcvo lution of the engine produces four

who has labored more constantly and zealously in the good cause than he. Where others have halted by the way side, he has ever been at the front, striking sturdy blows at tho i*anks of the enemy.

If constant and faithful service, long continued, is worthy of recognition, certainly Mr. KENNEDY has

stronger

claims than thoso of any other man yet mentioned for the placo. Knowing that his name upen the Stato ticket will give it material strength, both from his weli known character as a citizen, and his abilities upon tho stump, we trust ho will receive tho vote of tho Convention for tho office.. Tho delegates from Montgomery county will urge his jiamo before tho Convention, and we hope with success.

Republican Club.

Saturday, the 15ih of February, being the anniversary of Fort Donelson it is proposed to hold a meeting at the. Court House on that day at 7 o'clock P. M., to form a Republican Grant Club.

Pants, coi»t and vest, of the latest styles are provided* Whenever the fires need coaling, tho driver stops tho machine, descends from his seat, unbuttons "Daniel's" vest, opens a door, shovels in the fuel, buttons up tho vest and drives on. On the back between the shoulders tho steam cocks and gauges are placed. As these would cause tho coat to set awkwardly, a knapsack has been provided that completely covers them-. A blanket neatly rolled up and placed on top of the knapsack perfects tho delusion. The faco is moulded into a chccrful countenance of white enamel, which contrasts well with the long hair and moustache. A sheet iron bat with a guago top acts as a smoke stack.

Fire at Chicago.

Two very extensive and destructive fires occurred at Chicago on tho 2Sth ult.

Tho total number of twenty-two firms were ejected by tho two fires. The total loss is estimated at $2,070,000, and total insurance at SI,480,000. Some of tho estimate on loss reach as high figures as J2.GS1.000. But as yet of course it is out of the question to give reliable figures as to the amount of devastation so f-peedily wrought by this terrible scourge of firo, and it will probably be some da}-s before the full extent of losses will be known.

martyr President, itl^Will be well to submit the following^stubborn .facts to |ho earnest consi&bratirw of th'ose Democrats who are true and loyal at heart:

That tho rebellion was fermented by Democratic politicians oxclusivo-

That tho rebels wore Democrats and now are Copperheads. That every shot fired at the stars and Ptripcs was 6rjd by a Democrat. "That ihe first attack on Union soldiers marching to protect the Capi tol, was made by a Democratic mob in Baltimore.

That tho assassination conspirators were all Democrats. That Secretary Seward had his throat cut by a Democratic knife.

That the two hundred thousand heroic dead were killed by Democratic bullets.

That the fivo hundrod thousand Union soldiers wounded wero made so by Domocratic bullets.

That every soldier's widow was made a widow by a Domoeratic bullet. v: a

That every soldiers orphan was made such by a Democratic bullet. That all who lost a friend in the rebellion, lost that friend by a Democratic bullet.

That eighteen thousand Union sol diers at Andersonviilo were starved and murdered by Democrats.

That the bravo Nathaniel Lyon was killed by a Democratic bullet. That the chivalrous Baker was killed by a Democratic bullet.

That the gallant Mansfield was killed by a Democratic bullet. 1

Irit the model soldier, McPherson, was killed by a Democratic bullet. That tho estimable Wadsworth was killed by a Democratic bullet.

That the accomplished Reno was killed by a Democratic bullet. That tlie lamented Sedgwick was killed b\* a Democratic bullet.

That the youthful Col. Ellsworth was killed by a Democratic assassin. That the gallant and Christian sailor, Admiral Foote, lost his life by a dis ease contracted in putting down a Democratic rebellion.

Tho plots to buru northern cities and towns were concocted and set on foot bj* Democratic rebels.

That Chambersburg was burnod by men who always voted tho Democratic ticket.

That Dr. Blackburn, who undertook to introduco yellow fever among" lojal men. women and children by importing infected clothing was Democrat, and is now a Copporhead.

That tho Democrats are alone responsible for our national debt, as they inaugurated tho civil war, thus forcing tho government to crcato the debt in order to put down tho rebellion.

That Jeff. Davis has ttlways been a Domocratic leader. That all leading traitors were formerly Democrats, and are now Copperheads,

That not a solitary Republican ever joined tho rebels.' That not a disloyal shot was over fired by a Republican.

That not a Republican ever countenanced rebellion in any shape or manner.

That when tho Democrats formerly carried tho Presidential election the Republican party quietly submitted to the result like law-u-biding and pa triotic citizens.

That when the Republicans carried the Presidential election a great portion of tho Democratic part}* refused to do as the Republicans did. and submit but resorted to powder and lead, starving Union prLvmors, assas sination, burning peaceful merchant ships, arson, and violating all the laws of God and man in order to prevent the decree of tho majority in 1860 being caried out.

That the above are stubborn facts that cannot bo disproved by^all the Copperhead organs from tho Lakes to the Gulf and yet, the Copperheads after their Southern brethren had committed tho abovo atrocities, killing murdering, and assassinating Union eoldiers.are making wonderful pretensions of being tho soldi at's friends.

The President has approved the bill for tho distribution among the people of the South of tho accumulated desaicated vegetables not required for the uf»e of the army. Also tho bill pro viaing that contracts for stationer}' for tho Executive Department shall not be made for moro than ono year at a timo.

The 7th Congressional District is composed of the following counties, to wit: Benton. Boone, Carroll* Clinton. .Fountain, Montgomery, Tippeca noo and Warren.

The Boston Fcninns havo resolved to work on St. Patrick's Pay, instead of turning out in procession, us usual, and to devote tho earnings to revolutionary purposes in Ireland.

Letters from Killarnov, Ireland, state that tho clergy of that town who refused to sajT mass for tho souls of Allen, Larlcen and Gould, who were recently executed in Manchester, have ceased to receive any moncv for their support or that of ihe church. ...

That infamous guerrilla, Basil Duko, better known as "Morgan's brains," has recently published a letter urging upon the Democracy of tho West the nomination of Pendleton for tho next Presidency. There is fitness in this, for Pendleton's financial scheme is a guerrilla raid opon the public credit.

Governor Swann, of Maryland, ro fused to issuo a commission to Mr. Hamilton, the newly elected Senator, on the ground that ho was elected in violation of the East Shore latv cob-
