Consumptive People. A hundred times have my consumptive patients expressed surprise that tho wet weather in which
Ubut
sisted that they should go out-as usual bad not injured them—that they even breathed more freely than on pleasant days. Of course
the body is well protected, the more moist the air tho moro grateful to the lungs. There js no possible weather which can excuse the consumptive for keeping in-doors. Give him sufficient clothing, protect his feet carefully, and ho may go out freely in rain, sleet, enow and wind. Iguoranco of this fact has killed thousands. Consumptives and all invalids, and indeed persons in health, are cautioned to avoid the night air. Do those who offer this advice forget that there is no othor air at night but "night air?" Certainly wojeannot breathe day air during the night. Do they mean that wo should Bhut ourselves up in air-tight rooms and breathe over and over again thro' half the twenty-four hours tho atmosphere wo have already poisoned. Wo have only the choice between night air pure and nicht air poisoned "with the exhalations from our skins and lungs, perhaps from lungs already diseased.—Dr. Lewis.
Believing but not Understanding. "I will not believe anything but what I understand," said a self-confi-dent young man, in a hotol one day. "Nor will I," said another. "Noither will I," chimed in a third. "Gentlemen," said one well known to mo, who was on a journey and who sat close by, "do I understand you correctly, that you will not believe anything that you don't understand "I will not," said one, and so said cach one of the trio. "Woll," said the stranger, "in my ride this morning I saw some geese in a field eating grass do you believe that?". '•Certainly," said the threo unbelievers. "I also saw a pig eat grass do you believe that "Of course," said the three. "And I also saw sheep eating grass do you believe that "Of course," w&s again replied. "Well, but the grass which they had formerly eaten had, by digestion, turned to feathers on the backs of the geese, to bristles on the backs of the swine, and ^o wool on the sheep do you beliovo that, gentlemen "Certainly," they replied. "Yes, you believe it," ho rejoined,
do you understand it?" They were confounded and silent, and evidently ashamed, as they well might bel"
Tho Montgomery Sejitinel gives ntterance to the following bittor review of the cost of tho rebellion to Alabama: "What did secession and revolution agrinst the Government cost? It cost the lives of thirty thousand poor, unoffending men, who, while fighting for tho mob, believed the whole thing wrong before God It cost deep and bitter tears of sorrow from twenty thousand widows and fifty thousand orphan children. It cost the complete destruction of ovor ten hundred millions of dollars of property belonging to the people of Alabama! It caused the most abject poverty of two hundred thousand peoplo, who were, previous to secession and rebellion, in affluent circumstances It cost the white people of Alabama the equality of tho colored race."
The gentle Fenians have developed a new characteristic in their plan for tho liberation of Ireland. Letters filled with explosive matorials have been addressed to the prominont officials at Dublin, but their nature being discovered they failed of their object. A policeman who received one was horribly mangled. Tho Londom Times calls on tho principal towns to take extraordinary precautionary measures.
Santa Fo dates to tho 17th say that Chief Justice Slough was shot by Captain Eynerson of the Territorial Senate, from the effect of which he died in three days. The trouble arose out of pome remarks by Eynerson in tho
