General Wager Swaytio was ft galhint officer of our lato.volunteer army, nnd was ono in that galaxy of lioroea who marched with "Sherman to th& son. In a bailie on the soil of South Carolina ho lost a leg by a shot frofw tho enemy, and-.was promoted to-a Generalship in recognition of his valor. Since thoTorganization of tho Freedmon's JJureau ho has been_. Assistant Comniishioner for the State of Alaba ma, and has discharged his duties with signal ability. Neither tho enemies of tho Bureau in tho North nor tho nioat venom'ous of the unreconstructed rebels of Alat»an & have charged, him with failing ifi jlniegrity or d:eyotiori to duty. But bis* vory virtues havo provoked tho hostility of the copperhead vermin who.foster.in tho^orruption of tho White House, and through their influence Andrew Johnson has removed liim.

Tho only reason for this proscription of tho maimed soldier, that wo huvo seen published, is that Genora Swii3'no was ambitious to bo elected to tho United States Senate from the reconstructed State of Alabama. This miserable pretext i$ probably a faleo hood, manufactured for tho occasion jbut supposing it to be true, what call was thero for Mr. Johnson to interfere in tho election of Senators from that •:Stato? And who is more worthy to bo selected by tho Union men of Alabama to represent Ihem in the Senate, .than a man whose sword aided in.relieving them from the despotism of tho rebel usurpation

The puerilo excuse for removing army officers in tho Southern States, that they are aspirants for tho Sonate is getting stale. General Sickles was Accused of this offense against tho •Johnson code of high misdemeanors and ho was removed, ostensibly for ,that causovp Genoral Popo, it been suggested by Mr. Johnson's back door Cabinet, was ambitious of Senatorial honors, and he, to, has been removed. General Ord has not, wo believe been booked by tho Wash in ton Copper heads-us a candidate fur Senator from _Mississippi, but he jugged chivalric, high-toned, lirtL family tory editor at Yicksburg, for inflammatory and incendiary publications, calculated to •excite strife and bloodsheh in the community, and to bring the authority of the Government into contempt. Fortius, if for any cause, he has been re moved from his command arid ordered on duty in -California. The purpose of these removals, at- tins stage of the reconstruction work, is manifest-.,*..,-

Tho people would doubtless be glad to oceape tho payment of interest on tho national debt, by paying tho principal at once, if ablo to do so but that they do not wish to psy the principal now, is manifest from the universal demand for a reduction of taxes. TUE copperhead party has generally kept itself in existence by means of downright, hard, wilful lying, knowing full well that it can practieo this vice to any extent without detection by its own members. They are not suffered to road anything but copperhead literature, and even from that selection is generally made of the worst kind. Tho La Crosse Democrat, filled with its vulgar ribaldry and coarse lying abuse, is much moro attractive to the great body of the Democratic party than the able, and dignified New York World. The former has fifty subscribers at this point—tho latter noneBrick Pomeroy, a shrewd Yankee whose solo business is to make money off of gullible humanity, can fill his filthy paper with toe most outrageous lies, the grossest slanders, and they all pass among tho copperhead party as

sound currency, from the fact that those who read them never see or read a paper in which their true character and value are given. Democrats I aro systematically taught to hear biU. one side. If there is a public joint discission, though in a copperhead stronghold, the crowd is generally made up of Republican?. This being the case, the papers and leaders of the party can lie without detection nnd because they can lie with impunity, they follow lying as a trf.de. ^J3rick Pomeroy makes his living by lying. lie knows that every lie lie tells will bring him so much money.

A new Republican paper has been established at Covington, Fountain county, Indiana, under tho control of Mr. G. W. MERRYMAN. Judging from the first number it will be ably edited and neutly printed. It unfurls the banner for Gen. Grant for President, and Hon. Schuyler Colfax for Yice President. It has our best wishes for success, politically and pecuniarily.

SINGER SEWING MACHINES.

New York State Fair.

The State Fair just closed (at Buffalo) was im. uncxiimpled success,in nearly every department. Tfcc interest which ururilly centers upon sewing machines was net wanting. It. was intensified, doubtless, by the angry (and not altogether reputablo) dispute which has arisen over tho "medals'-' said to have been awarded at the Paris Exposition. But these medals counted for nothing here, for the judges insisted upon a tborougn examination for themselves of the several machines in competition, and tho result was a nnanioioua report awarding the highest prize to the exhibitors of the "Singer" for tho best family sowingmachine also for the best manufacturing ma-, chine, an also for th-j best button-hols machine. A clean sweep and a righteous judgement saythose wlio are best informed. It was suggested by many who saw the magnilcent display mad» of these machines, and tho variety and admirable quality of the work they performed, that tho manufacturers were remiss in not sending them to the Paris Exposition, and thus have obviated the bitter controversy being carried, on over tho "old medal. But tho Singer Manufacturing Couipanv, whose sales of machines for the past year have exceeded forty-thrco thousand (some thousands inoro th«n any other, company in th» world) care more for the "people's verdict," w® apprehend, than for all the gold medals that .wero or could have been awarded at Paris. Tha Exhibition at Buffalo, to which we have alluded, was made by the enterprising agonts of tho Singer machines in ticii.—• Utica Dai!v Herald, Oct. 9.,
