."BOWEN,In Ills last issue, admits that the Demooratie party elected a miserable old traitor to the Presidency in 1856y and theroby filled many of the public offices, in the country with thieving Copporheada, who plundered the public arsenals and sent their contents South to bo used by Democrats to overthrow the Government. He makes no denial of anything we charged against the Copperhead party on this subject, but attempts to break the force of it by asserting that we helped to elect Buchanan President, held a Post Office under his administration, &e., &c. What we did, as an individual, under Buchanan's administration or anybody elses' administration, has no bearing whatever upon tbo subject under consideration. The matter stands thus: Bowen charged that, the Union party is responsible for all the frauds perpetrated upon the trcasur}- for a good many years back. "W.e denied the charge, and called his attontion to the thioft of Charlod Hall, of IndianapoKs, who was convicted and sent to the penitentiary by a Republican administration, for swindling tho Government in a horso contract. "We also reminded him of the fact that John B. Floyd, a Democratic Secretary of War under Buchanan, emptied our arsenals for the bonofit of Southern robolf, and that this single tholt, which Bowen approved at the time and has ever since approved, cost the Government more than it lost by dishonest office holders in tho whole conrso of its existence prior to find rinco that wholesale thieving transaction Ho now tacitly acknowledges thr.t ho lied in tho first instance, and hopes to turn public attention from the subject by making a personal attack on us. 'Wo shall not be drawn from tho subject in that way
know that it is unpleasant to the Copperhead party to havo the responsibility for these and other like gigantic swindles fastened upon its skirts, hut it will have to bear it. Its leaders and editors ought to iinvo bettor sense than to ever mention tho subject of plundering the Government.
Bowen said that wo approved Buchanan's administration after nine-tenths of tho Democratic party had forsaken it. When did nine-tenths of tlio Dem ocratic party forsako, Buchanan "s administration. Kot until, under the influence of tho terrible uprising of tho loyal element of tho country, ho refused to surrender Fort Sumter into the hands of tho South Carolina traitors.' It was just at this point that nine-tenths c-f the Democrats in tho cruntry forsook tho miserable old
TIIK editor of Oho Journal declined to mako any satisfactory explanation of hiB connection in the horse contracts with HALL & Co. The only oymission he makes in his last issue is, that UALL was a War Democrat, and was was pardoned for a discrepancy in accounts in settling with the Lincoln Government.—Review. :A11 a mistake, BOWEN., We thought wo wero very explicit in our explanation. Wo distinctly stated that you were an unmitigated liar and slanderer, and wo reiteralo tho chargo, and hurl it in your cowardly teeth. You knew when }*ou made the chargo that it was a wilful and malicious false hood: So much for the dirty pensioner who presides over tho Copperhead organ, both of which are owned, sou! '«nd 'nndv f.vnn and steam. by an un-
imbecile and went boldly into the [public expenditures, and the cnforcorebel army. This is the only way in which, nino tentha of the Democrats forsook his administration. Bowen now abuses us beeauso we did not forsako it in the samo way. When wo became satisfied that tho Democratic party meditated an overthrow of tho Government, we left it and joined the only loyal organization in tho country. It was just thero that wo parted company with Bowen, we going into tho Union party and he into tho"Knights of tho Golden Circle, a miserable, cowardly organization gotten up by officers from the rebel army, and furnished with mono}* by Jeff. Davis to buy arms for the purpose of liberating rebel prisoners, and' devastating tho Stato of Indiana. All this has been proven by the sworn testimony of JLIeffron and Jo. Bingham, two of tho chief Demoex-ats of the Slate the latter, through the whole period of tho war. tho chief editor of
knowledge, but wo do know that ho owned an interest in tho Stalo Sentinel, a Douglass organ, and the fact is patent to every one that he swindled tho Government, was.tried, convicted *and sentenced to the State's prison, and was pardoned by Bowon's "noble Probident"'—Andrevf Johnson. We did not admit that Hall was a War Democrat, and our language cannot be tortured into any such meaning. On the contrary, he was a rebel Democrat of the Bowen stripe, in full sympathy with tho Southerr Democratic traitors. Is the drunken bloat of the
Review so stupified with bad whiskey that he cannot understand plain English, or does ho wilfully pervort the truth

Look on the shilling suu, that wondrous source X'^JCV of Pon^6.?.'.
Look where the forests lift their waiving hands Look at the river gliding o'er its sands Look at the flowers npspringing from the sod—' Then say within thv heart, O, man, "There i3 no God!"
Say that by chance those lofty mountains rise, Lifting their snow-crowned peaks up to the azure skies Behold tho lightning's glare, list to the thunder's Dog Tax
Behold the ocean beating 'giuunt the clili-girt shore Look on the grass, read on each springing blade— Read in the flowers that deck the dewy glade— E'en in the smallest worm that crawls this curious earth, The traces of that mighty Hand that gave them birth.
No power of man, or chance, could make the seed to grow— No earthly power could make the rivers flow. No earthly power could make the fresh rains fall But there's an unseen Hand in wisdom governs all. 'Tis He who -ends the winter wind and snow, 'Tis He who bids the summer sunshine glow, 'Tis He who rules the Heavens and the earth, 'Tis He who gave to Time and Death their birth: Look over all this world by mortals trod, And read on everything the wisdom ol' a God.

The following letter, addressed to a fellow-townsman, and handed us for We publication, explains itself:
WASHINGTON CITY, Dec. 9, 1807. James Graham, Esq., DEAR SIR:—Your favor of the -4th itiBt., i*8 received, requesting niv "opioion in reference to the great financial questions of the day." I agree with you that upon the proper 6olution of I these questions depends, in a great! measure, th6 future success of the He-1 publican party, and the consequent welfare of tho whole country. 1 have faith in tho wisdom and patriotism of our party, and as it was able to carry tho country safely thro the rebellion, FO I believe it to be able to manago its affairs with equal success in times of peace.
In this connection several important duties devolve upon Congress during its present session, among which may be enumerated the reduction of all
ment of the most rigid economy in all tho departments of tho Government, limiting all appropriations to the absolute requirements of the public scrvice.

The ^National Bank currency can be withdrawn from circulation, and its placo supplied b}' an issue of lega! tender, (greenbacks.) and the amount

That large amount of our national wealth now invested in U. S. SINGER SEWING MACHINES., New York State Fair,
Tho-State Fair just clo.cd (at Buffalo) was aft unexampled success in nearly every department. The interest which usually centers upon sowing machines was not wanting. It was intensi&ed, doubtless, by the angry (and not altogether reputable) dispute which has arisen over th« "niodals" said to have been awarded at tho Paris Imposition. But these medals counted for nothing here, for the judges insisted upon a thorougn examination for theinselves'of the several machines in competition, and the result was a unanimous, report awarding the highest prize to iho exhibitors of the ".Singer" for tho best family sewingmachine also for tho best manufacturing machine, an also for tho host button-hole machine. A clean sweep and a righteous judgement saythose who are best informed. It was suggested by many who saw the magniOcent display madu of these machines, and the variety and admirable quality of tho work they performed, that tbo manufacturers were romiss in not sending them to the Paris Exposition, and thus have obviated the bitter controversy being carried on over tho gold medal. But the Singer Manufacturing Company, whose sales of machines for the past, vear have exceeded forty-three thousand (somo "thousands more thin any other company in the world) care more for the "people's verdict," wo apprehebd, than for all the gold nicduls that were or could hare been awarded at Paris. Tl» Exhibition at Buffalo, to which we have alluded, was made by the enterprising agents of tho Singor maohincs iu Utica.—
