The Bankrupt Act.
After March 1st, '68, no individual bun g.o into bankruptcy, without paying 50 per cont, of his liabiliites, so that thoso who desire to realize the full boncfits of the I iw, should, make application at once. Congress,'it is ruiffoftjd, repeftl tho ac^, during its present session, and In that event, many persons will regret that they xlill not accept tho law's provisions, and .make thoir iiuanekil bodies ''whole "again.''
To a patriotic friend who wishes .Andrew Jackson where Andrew JohnHon is, tho lU'ookvillo Union replies that seoing Andrew Johnson where Andrew Jackson is would suit it quite as well.
Tho Democratic leaders are at much variance on tho question of paying off the public debt in greenbacks. In fact they havo really commenced quarreling over the matter. The Eastern Democracy, represented by Sam Cox and others, denouco tho policy of the Western Confederate Democracy as nothing less than absolute repudiation and a consummate swindle.
"What do you call this said Mr. Jones Smith gently tapping his breakfast with his fork.

tho landlady, "what do you call it,?" "Well, really," remarked Smith, don't know. There is not hair enough jn it for mortar, but thcro is entirely too much if it is intended for hash/'
An adroit scheme for cheating the Government out of tho whisk}* tax .was discovered in ISTew York a few days ago. Some drunken workmen were overheard saying that they knew where to get whisky free-. Thoy were traced to -13-1 Ninth Avenue, which was occupied as a fat boiling establishment. In the offal covered floor a trap was discovered, and below this were two large stills. The fermenting

tubs wcro in the cellar of tho next building, Xo. 4UG. Through the wall between 430 and 438 an opening had' been cut to facilitate tho escape of tho men running tho stills. Thoy were accordingly not captured. Tho concern has been running a year, and is supposed to havo defrauded tho Government to tho amount of §30.000.
At tho present term of tho circuit court, in tho caso of Fiddler vs. Kells. Judge Bicknell decided that a wife can only hold property in her own right, when derived from one of these three sources gift, deviso or descent.
The caso was ono where the wife borrowed money in Michigan with which she established a millinery store, and from the loan and its promts she .bought real estate. It was claimed that tho property was hers, and not her husband's. Judge Bichnoll decides that the loan and its profits belong to tho husband. JSTo subsequent ^transaction can alter his rights ir. tho. premises, therefore such property is subject to his debts just as any other,
This decision will efleet' a complete revolution in actions for the recovei of debts incurred by tho husband, in which tho apparent ownership has been transferred to the wife to avoid payment. It is certainly a move in the right direction, making justice and .right the rulo, rather than tho sub .terfugo of a more technicality.—N. A.
Ledger.
The New Albany .Ledger tells of a Democrat who visited that city, a few days ago, with a lot of turnips, which lie sold for five dollars, to a groceryman, lie then purchased twenty-five cents worth of coffee, twenty-five cents worth of sugar, and fifty cents worth 1 of salt. Tlio remainder of tho five -dollars he laid out in whisky and tobaco. The great moral quostion is. what did ho want with so much coffee, sugarand salt?

A terrible tragedy has oceured in Austrian -Tyrol. A farmer, after effecting a heavy insurancoon his house and barns, set fire to tho latter, but was discovorod in tho act by ono of his shepherds, lie thereupon killed the shepherd and murdered his wife and infant son, finishing by cutting his own throat,"'
A quantity of nitro glycerine in the hands of a workman at Bergen, New Jersey, who was heating ii for blasting purposes, exploded yc6tcrduy, tore the house to atoms, killed nine persons and injured six others.
A couple of female practical jokers frightened a yourig Htarried woman into insanity, at Milwaukee, tho other day, by telling her that her husband was dead.

Mr. Battle, of Memphis, was robbed on the highway. A few days after wards a stranger was telling a tale of having been similaly attacked, when Mr. Battle recognized him as his assailant. Ho told his suspicions to his ^friends, and thoy took the stranger out iand handed him.
An exchange says that the Democratic reading of tho well known Bible verso is: "Suffer little white children -to come unto me, and forbid them not, /for of such is the Kitjgdom of Heaven."
