Pedestrl anism as it Used So Be. Foster Powell, the celebrated ped csttrian, was born in England in 1734. In 1764 he undertook to walk fifty tnilea in seven hours, which he accomplished in lime. The first .ten miles he walked in one hour, although he was encumbered with a great coat and leather breeches. He visited several parts, of Switzerland and France, and gained, much fame by his pedestrian feats. In 1763 ho walked from London to York und back, a distance of four hundred miles, in five days and eighteen hours. This was his first match for a wager. A few years later he attemptod to run twomil'es in ten minutes, but lost the wager by half

ininuto. In 17SG ho walked one huncU'cdi milos-in twenty-three and threefourths hours. Tho next year ho walked from Canterbury to London idgc and back in twenty-four hours, tho distance one hundred and twelve miles.
When fifty-oight years old ho repeated his journoy to York and back in live daj-s and fifteen hours. On his return ho was saluted with loud huzzas of the astonished and anxious apectators. At an other time ho walked ono mils in nine minutes and twenty seconds In person he was tall and thin, about five feet nine incher high, very strong downwards, lie died in 1693. Ilia complexion was sallow. He was ahvaj'S poor, never caring for monoj'. Ili.s funeral was cheraoterized as a walking one. lie was followed to the grave by twenty persons on foot and in black gowns.
Too talc—'Thought They Were Married When They Were Hot. A short time ago a candidate for matrimon}* arrived in town, and straightway repairod to the office of our obliging County Clerk, for tho purpose of obtaining a marriage certificate. The Clerk misunderstood the name of, tho fuir one who had made inroads on the affections of the applicant, and consequently inserted tho wrong namo of the femalo party who was to be tied by the silken cords. Tho intended groom was so dolighted with tho prospect before him that he did not stop to read tho document after it was placed in his hands, but forking over two dollars he thrust tho legal document in his pocket. Gaining an audionce with the object of his heart, the two repaired- to tho house of a clergyman, where the document
presented, which, in the eyes of the clergyman, appeared porfectly right, and the two were united in the holy bonds of wedlock.
Tho next morning, upon sitting AWFORDSVILLE themselves at tho breakfast table of'|
one of our hotels, the groom commenced reading the record of his marriage in the morning papers and found the

printers had him married to another woman. Thrusting his hand in his pocket, ho pulled out the marriage license, when, lo and behold to his utter astonishment, he found that tho clerk had committed tho grave error of inserting tho \yrong name of the intended brido Turning to the object of his affection, with an excited though tremulous voico, he exclaimed: "Maria, a mistake has been made, ana and I am married to tho wrong woman You are not my lawful wife Marin gave a glanco at the document, and with a half drawn sigh, answered: "It's no use fretting, Jeremiah—it's too lato now.
IVorel Carriage—Horse Inside. An ingenious idea has been carried out successfully in Cincinnati by the construction of a one-wheeled carriage propelled by tho horses being inside. It consists of a large wooden wheel, fourteen feet in diameter and six feet broad, with footboard for tho horses to hold. From the axis are suspend ed seats for the passengers, which axle extends on both sides beyond the wheel, it being only necessary to keep them balanced. Iron stays from the extremities of the axle- are carried over tho top rather in front, which tupportft the seat for the person-who drives the vehicle, which is done with tho greatest eapc, and it can turn in a much shorter space than a coach.- A successful trial was made recently with one carrying twenty four passengers, and two heavy draught horse, previously trained, as they are entirely unfettered by harness. A distace of five inileswas performed in twenty-eight minutes. Tho work of the horses is r-.w, as they travel on an endless plank road.
Tho Italian controversy is triangular. Tho parties aro the people, the Pope, and tho Italian Government. The Government is involved in the agreement of September, to maintain the Popo in his present position. The people demand the unity of Italyand tho establishment of tho Capital at 'Home, tho ancient seat of Empire. The Pope insits, and France aids him. in holding on to tho sraprcmo control of Homo and a few small provinces that are attached to tho Vatican. It ia evident, from the spirit of the people, that a state of war in spirit, if not ia fact will subsist between tho Empe ror ol France and tho people of Italy until thw lvoman theocracy is suppressed.
BRICK POMKKOV'S paper, tho La Cross Democrat, has become the leadinf* organ of the Democratic .party in°tho West. It eclipscs both the" Chicago Times and Cincinnati Enquirer, as a representative papeP of the party of repudiation. Tho Journal regards'its editor as tho most available candidato for Vice President of any one of the men whoso claims have been discussed in tho connection.
The Boston plumbers are ovorrun eince the election with orders for new beer and ale fountains, and repairs on the old ones.
